Registering online: what you need and how it works

Using Berlin as an example

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and explains here how registering after a move works online in Berlin.

Registering your new address (Ummeldung) after a move can be done online in more and more cities – in Berlin, for example, without an appointment at the registration office (Bürgeramt). The requirements are an ID card or eID card with the online ID function switched on, the corresponding PIN, a BundID account and a card reader or a suitable smartphone with the AusweisApp. Tenants also upload the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). According to the State of Berlin, registration is free of charge. More about our services for your move can be found under private move.

The deadline remains the same as for a visit to the office: two weeks after moving in, whether within the city or after a long-distance move. Whether online registration is possible at your new place of residence, you can see on the city's website; in Berlin on service.berlin.de. If it does not work online, book an appointment. Destinations with their own page can be found under locations, routes from Berlin under long-distance moves.

MAXIMUM CARE

What we take on – and what stays online

Transport by us, registration by you

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for your move, take care of packing, carrying, transport and, on request, assembly – at a fixed price that we quote after the assessment. For damage to household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. The registration itself can only be done by the person required to register, online or at the registration office. A tip: do not pack your ID card, PIN letter and landlord confirmation in a box – keep them in your bag.

Packing on request

With a packing service there is time left for the formalities. Keep your card reader or smartphone with the AusweisApp within reach.

Transport

With furniture transport within Berlin, the move is often done in one day – online registration can follow the same evening.

Assembly

With a move with assembly, the desk is back up quickly – and with it the space for your laptop and card reader to register.

Parking restriction

A parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) makes moving day shorter. On request we apply for it and set it up, so that you have time for other things.
STEP BY STEP

Six steps to online registration

This is how online registration works, using Berlin as an example. Other cities use similar services; the requirements may differ in detail. Anyone who does not meet the requirements – for example when moving from abroad or with an electronic residence permit – registers as before with an appointment at the registration office.

01

Check your ID card

Is the online ID function switched on and do you know the PIN? If not, this can be sorted out at the registration office – allow some lead time for it.
02

Set up BundID

For the online service you need a BundID account, which you set up with your ID card and the PIN. This is done once and also works for other online services.
03

Have the confirmation ready

Tenants upload the landlord confirmation; the tenancy agreement does not replace it. Ask for it as a PDF or photo when you move in.
04

Enter your details

Enter the new address and the move-in date. People moving with you who are currently registered at the same address can be registered too – with confirmation that you are authorised to do so.
05

Update the chip

Finally, the AusweisApp writes the new address onto the chip. The Federal Printing Office (Bundesdruckerei) sends the address sticker for the ID card by post.
06

Keep to the deadline

Online too, the rule is: within two weeks of moving in. Anyone who does not register in time risks a fine of up to €1,000.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Furniture later, registration straight away

With a shared load, your furniture travels with other consignments on the same route and arrives within a time window. The registration deadline still runs from when you move in, not from delivery. Online, registration is done quickly, even if some boxes are still missing.

Other
formalities after the move

Registration certificate, post, car

Besides registering your residence, other things are due after the move: the registration certificate for your bank or employer, the post office's mail forwarding order and, if applicable, re-registering your car. If you are planning a private move, it is best to schedule these points in the two weeks after moving in; after a long-distance move, check which online services your new city offers. How to get an appointment instead is explained in the article Booking an appointment at the registration office.

Possible online?

In Berlin, yes – with the online ID function, PIN, BundID and for adults with German or EU citizenship moving within Germany. Other cities are at different stages; the website of the registration authority will tell you.

What counts on moving day

Do not pack your ID card and PIN letter, and ask for the landlord confirmation at the key handover. That way you have the documents to hand while the furniture transport and small removal are under way.

After registering

Put the address sticker on, change your address with your bank, insurers and employer. A car must be re-registered at the vehicle registration office without delay; the number plate can stay. Keep the registration certificate with your moving documents.

FAQ

Questions about online registration

Availability, deadline, documents, cost, ID card, family and car – answered briefly.
In Berlin, yes: with the online ID function, PIN and BundID you can complete online registration without an appointment. In other cities, sometimes only appointment booking is possible online. Check on the website of your new municipality which steps can be done digitally. For people moving from abroad, an appointment at the registration office is still required in Berlin.

How online registration works, step by step

In Berlin, online registration works like this: you log in with BundID and the online ID function, enter the new address and the move-in date and, if you rent, upload the landlord confirmation. Finally, the AusweisApp updates the address on your ID card's chip; the Federal Printing Office sends the address sticker by post. There is no sticker for an eID card.

Not every city offers registration fully online yet; some only allow appointments to be booked online. So check on the official website of your new municipality which route is possible, and switch to an appointment if necessary.

Important deadlines and documents for registration

The deadline for registering is two weeks after moving in (§ 17 BMG), online as at the office. Anyone who does not register in time risks a fine of up to €1,000 (§ 54 BMG). Tenants need the landlord confirmation from their landlord, who must issue it within this period (§ 19 BMG).

If several people move together, with online registration in Berlin you can also register people who are currently registered at the same address. After a long-distance move, the same deadline applies at the new place of residence; so prepare the documents before moving day.
