From Berlin to Zwolle: route driving times and registration

Schedule Berlin – Zwolle
Berlin – Zwolle: the way to Overijssel
Route, paperwork, schedule
A move to Zwolle is a long-distance move across the German-Dutch border: from Berlin it is around 569 road kilometres, usually via the A2 to Bad Oeynhausen, the A30 to the border at Bad Bentheim and the Dutch A1. Within the EU you do not need a customs declaration for your household goods. We take care of packing, transport and furniture assembly; you can find more about our services for private households under private move.
Zwolle is the capital of the province of Overijssel. Plan your registration with the municipality (gemeente) before moving day: anyone staying longer than four months must register no later than five days after arrival. In the city centre, a zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissie-Zone) for vans and lorries has applied since 2025 – we take this into account when choosing the vehicle. What life is like in the districts is described in our guide Living in Zwolle.

What we settle before the drive to Zwolle
Loading day, driving time, access
The EU driving time rules apply to the roughly 569 km: a maximum of nine hours per day, with a 45-minute break after 4.5 hours at the latest. Lorries over 7.5 t may not drive in Germany on Sundays and public holidays. That is why we set the loading day, drive and unloading day with a buffer and check in advance whether the destination address lies within the zero-emission zone. Frequently asked questions about the drive to Zwolle
No customs, but deadlines: paperwork for Zwolle
Germany and the Netherlands are EU members, so there is no customs clearance for private household goods. An inventory list is still useful, for example for insurance. Before departure you deregister in Germany: within two weeks of moving out, at the earliest one week beforehand (§ 17 (2) BMG). Deutsche Post offers a mail forwarding order for private customers for six months.
After arrival, if you are staying more than four months, you register in person with the Zwolle municipality within five days (BRP). With registration you receive your citizen service number (BSN), which you need for your employment contract, bank account and health insurance. A car that stays permanently is registered with the RDW.
How the long-distance move Berlin – Zwolle works
It starts with the survey, during which we record the volume and any special features. Then we set the schedule: packing and loading in Berlin, driving via the A2 and A30 to the border at Bad Bentheim, then on the Dutch A1 towards Overijssel. For larger households, loading and unloading take place on two days.
In Zwolle we check in advance whether the destination address within the canals lies in the zero-emission zone and plan the vehicle and parking space accordingly. Dutch tenancy agreements differ on points such as notice period and deposit – read them carefully before signing. Further routes can be found under long-distance moves.
Moving prices by flat size
Small moves are possible with us from €375 – this applies to 1-room flats. Larger households pay correspondingly more: 2 rooms from €609, 3 rooms from €899, 4 rooms from €1,299. For a house or a villa there is no flat rate, but always an individual quote. If you are moving further afield, you pay from €4.20/km for long-distance moves. The quickest route is a free survey.
What the price to Zwolle depends on
Important factors are the volume of your household, the distance (from €4.20/km) and the floor with or without a lift. A parking restriction zone may also be needed. For further services see furniture assembly and part load.

Zwolle: paperwork, driving times and registration after arrival
The Netherlands is part of the EU. According to German customs, you can take goods for personal use or consumption within the EU duty-free; cash of 10,000 euros or more must be declared on request. In Germany, some medicines are subject to authorisation requirements or bans, so clarify special cases in advance. The overall process is described in our guide Moving to the Netherlands: customs, formalities and process.
The EU social rules apply to the drive from Berlin to Zwolle: according to the European Commission, a maximum of 9 hours of driving per day is permitted, up to 10 hours twice a week. After 4.5 hours at the latest, a break of at least 45 minutes is compulsory, and the daily rest period is at least 11 hours. In addition, under § 30 (3) StVO, lorries over 7.5 t may not be driven in Germany on Sundays and public holidays from midnight to 10 pm; the regulation does not list removal traffic as an exception. That is why we plan the loading day, drive and unloading day with a buffer.
After arrival, if you are staying more than four months, you must, according to Nederland Wereldwijd, register in person within 5 days with the municipality (BRP). Partners and children moving with you also attend in person with valid ID. An appointment is usually necessary, and the municipality states the required certificates, often birth or marriage certificates. You can reach the Zwolle municipality on +31 38 498 31 38. Zwolle: zero-emission zone, lorry charge, parking and waste
According to the platform Op weg naar ZES, Zwolle is one of the municipalities that has had a zero-emission zone for city logistics since 1 January 2025. The page does not state which streets are affected; ask the Zwolle municipality about the area. The platform lists removal lorries (verhuisauto's) among the exemptions from the rule for newly registered lorries. For vans: new delivery vans (bestelwagens) from 1.1.2025 must be emission-free. According to the platform, the fine in 2026 is 130 euros for vans and 320 euros for lorries. An exemption permit can only be obtained via the RDW.
For lorries with a technically permissible maximum mass over 3,500 kg, the Dutch lorry charge (vrachtwagenheffing) provides for billing per kilometre driven; this requires a contract with a provider and an on-board unit. The page does not explicitly mention removal vans (verhuiswagens), so we clarify the obligation before departure.
On housing: according to the municipality, a resident's parking permit is tied to your place of residence and a vehicle in your name, and in and around the city centre there is at most one permit per address. It is applied for online via the Parkeerloket. For parking the removal van or for visitors, ask the municipality directly.
The waste charge is levied by GBLT: a fixed amount plus a fee per emptying of the residual waste container. Everything about the process and planning can be found under long-distance move, prices and neighbourhoods in the guide to costs and districts.
