Long-distance move Berlin – Groningen: route process & deadlines

From Berlin to Groningen
Long-distance move to Groningen – 565 km to the north of the Netherlands
Guide
A move abroad needs more planning than a move within Berlin, even if it only goes as far as Groningen in the north of the Netherlands. From our base on Stromstraße it is around 565 km: via the A2 to Hanover, the A7 and A27 to Bremen, the A1 and A28 via Oldenburg to Leer, the A31 to the border and, in the Netherlands, via the A7 to Groningen. With breaks the lorry takes a good eight hours. We handle your home move from packing to assembly in the new flat.
Because Germany and the Netherlands are both in the EU, there are no customs formalities for your household goods. Since 1 July 2026, heavy lorries in the Netherlands have paid a distance-based charge (vrachtwagenheffing), which we include in the quote. We quote the fixed price after a survey; for your belongings we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. After arrival you register with the Gemeente (municipality) within five days. Call us on 01625978461 for advice on your long-distance move to Groningen.

After a survey, with every item listed
Request your quote for the move to Groningen: after a survey or video call we give you a fixed price in which packing, the roughly 565 km journey, the Dutch lorry charge and assembly are listed as separate items. That way you know what to expect before moving to the Netherlands and can plan the date and key handover with certainty. You can reach us on 01625978461.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

What we take care of when you move to Groningen
One day on the road, one firm plan
We have no branch in the Netherlands; instead we come by lorry from Berlin-Moabit. For the roughly 565 km we set the loading and arrival times so that the van reaches Groningen on the same day. In the Binnenstad (city centre) there are delivery time windows until 12 noon and a zero-emission zone (Zero-Emissie-Zone); we clarify before the date whether our vehicle needs an exemption. You take care of registering with the Gemeente, the BSN and registering your car yourself – we tell you which documents to keep to hand. We quote the fixed price after the survey.

Well planned over 565 km
A long-distance move to Groningen can be planned when the route, loading time and arrival are fixed in advance. We fix them together with you and then quote a fixed price – from the first enquiry to the last box.
Arrival fixed
Access sorted
Delivery window observed
Planned backwards
Storage to bridge a gap
Ready for the Gemeente
Part load for small amounts
For smaller moving volumes, a part load (Beiladung) can be cheaper: your household goods are transported together with other consignments on the same route heading north-west. This option suits students at the University of Groningen or commuters who have some flexibility on the delivery day.

Your
move – fully organised
With a move abroad to Groningen, points come up that play no role within Germany: deregistration in Berlin, registration in the Basisregistratie Personen (Personal Records Database) within five days, the BSN, health insurance and the Dutch lorry charge. On the other hand, there is no customs duty on your household goods. The choice between a full move and a part load also affects costs and schedule. You will find the key facts on each of these topics here.

Common questions
No customs, but deadlines: formalities when moving to Groningen
As the Netherlands and Germany are both EU member states, there is no customs clearance for household goods and no list of removal goods for your move to Groningen. Your own inventory list of valuable items is still sensible, for checking after unloading and in the event of damage. In Germany you deregister at the earliest one week before and at the latest two weeks after moving out.
What matters is registration on time: anyone living in the Netherlands for more than four months registers with the Gemeente in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP) no later than five days after arrival and thereby receives the citizen service number (BSN). You need this number for health insurance, a bank account and your employer. Partners and children come along to the appointment.
Route, duration and costs of your long-distance move to Groningen
The cost of a move to Groningen depends on the moving volume, floor, access and additional services such as packing or assembly – and on the route: around 565 km from Berlin-Moabit via Hanover, Bremen, Oldenburg and Leer. By lorry that is a good eight hours including breaks, so the journey fits into one day. For smaller households, a part load can be cheaper than a dedicated transport.
The process begins with a free survey or video call, followed by the quote with a fixed price and scheduling. On moving day we pack and load in Berlin, drive to Groningen and reassemble the furniture there; for an arrival in the Binnenstad we work to the loading window until 12 noon. Call us on 01625978461 to discuss your schedule.

Berlin – Groningen: lorry charge (heffing) and registration within 5 days
On a long-distance move from Berlin to Groningen, the removal lorry drives through the Netherlands, where the "vrachtwagenheffing" applies to heavy goods vehicles. According to vrachtwagenheffing.nl, it covers vehicles in categories N2 and N3 with a technically permissible maximum mass over 3,500 kg, both Dutch and foreign. It is paid per kilometre and covers almost all motorways. The transport company needs a contract with a service provider and an on-board unit for this. Which route the van takes in detail is decided by our dispatch team on the day of departure according to traffic and roadworks.
On arrival day in Groningen a fixed deadline begins for you: on its page for internationals, the city of Groningen writes that you must register with the municipality within 5 days of arrival. According to the city, you only receive the citizen service number (BSN) once you are officially registered. If you stay for less than four months, you can register as a "non-resident" and also receive a BSN.
- Plan moving day so that you can complete registration in the first few days.
- Have your passport or ID card and proof of residence ready; the municipality gives the exact list of documents when you book the appointment.
- As a further step in the first week, the city mentions applying for DigiD access; the International Welcome Center North (iwcn.nl) helps with the formalities.

Groningen: waste card, paper containers and glass after moving in
After unpacking, there is a lot of packaging material in the first few days. On its page for internationals, the city of Groningen explains how waste collection works in everyday life.
- Waste card: you can apply for it online via the Gemeente Groningen website or by telephone on 14 050. According to the city, a replacement card costs 2 euros; if you order by telephone, you have to collect and pay for the card at the office.
- Paper: there are separate paper containers, often in residential areas. In many areas paper is also collected monthly.
- Glass: according to the city, glass containers are located throughout the city.
- Deposit: bottles and jars with a deposit (statiegeld) can be returned at the supermarket.
- Batteries and light bulbs: many supermarkets have collection points.
Households that use a waste card do not usually receive a compost bin; anyone who has a grey municipal container (kliko) can request a green compost container. The municipality also offers the online "Afvalwijzer" waste guide. For questions about the waste card you can reach the Gemeente by telephone on 14 050. According to the city, paper belongs only in the containers provided for it. Further everyday tips, for example on registration, are provided by the city at groningen.nl/internationals. If you need to sort out household items before the move, our clearance service can help. Districts and costs are explained in Moving to Groningen: costs and districts.
