Movers in Winter: Clothing Footwear and Warm Breaks

Movers in winter
Well dressed through moving day
Stay warm, carry safely
You sweat while carrying and freeze while waiting for the next box – a winter move constantly switches between the two. Anyone hauling things in a thick down jacket is soon soaked and gets cold during breaks. Several thin layers that you can take off and put on depending on the work are better. At Beste Umzug Unternehmen we make sure our team works sure-footedly and with grippy gloves. For your private move the same applies: your own helpers need the right kit too.
The biggest danger in winter is falling on slippery steps and pavements – with a wardrobe in your hands you cannot break your fall. Shoes with a deep tread, clear walkways and clear agreements while carrying are therefore more important than any technique. Plan breaks somewhere warm and have hot drinks ready. We give you the fixed price after the survey, and your belongings are covered under the German Commercial Code (HGB).

Let the professionals carry, stay warm yourself
Fixed price after a survey, team with winter equipment
Not every friend fancies carrying boxes up to the fourth floor at minus five degrees. Our team takes on the heavy trips while you keep an overview in the warm flat. We give you the fixed price after the survey. Call us on 01625978461 and arrange a date for your winter move.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

How our team works in the cold
Sure-footed and well practised
On ice, routine counts: people who often carry together agree on things before going down an icy step. Our team works in sturdy footwear and gloves with grip, lays out non-slip mats and clears the walkway before the heavy pieces come. We take our breaks somewhere warm, not on the pavement. We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and operate nationwide. Your belongings are covered under the HGB.

What helpers need in winter
Professionals or friends: anyone carrying in the cold needs suitable clothing, a firm footing and regular breaks somewhere warm. That way your winter move stays safe – and nobody ends up in bed with a cold afterwards.

A part load instead of a call for helpers
Only a few pieces of furniture and no helpers available? A part load is an affordable solution in which we take your belongings along on a tour that is already planned. In winter we agree a time window with a buffer so that nobody has to wait long in the cold for the van.

Warm
and safe through moving day
The eleventh part of our winter series is about the people who carry. Cold, wet and ice take a greater toll on helpers than on furniture: anyone who is freezing loses concentration, and anyone who slips on an icy step can be seriously injured. We show which clothing and shoes have proven themselves, how to plan breaks and refreshments, and what matters when carrying on ice. This is just as important for a private move with friends as for a long-distance move with professionals.

Frequently asked questions about helpers on a winter move
Clothing and footwear for a winter moving day
Carrying is hard physical work: after just a few trips you start sweating, and during every break your body cools down again. Layering has proven itself – a base layer, a fleece or jumper over it and a short, windproof jacket that doesn't get in the way while carrying. Long scarves catch on furniture edges; a hat or headband is more practical. Pack a change of clothes and dry socks within easy reach.
When it comes to shoes, tread is what counts: sturdy, ankle-high shoes with a deep sole give grip on snow and steps and protect your toes if something falls. Work gloves with rubberised palms keep you warm and don't slip off wet boxes.
Carrying safely on ice: agreements and breaks
On slippery paths the rule is: walk slowly, take short steps, keep the load close to your body. Whoever carries at the front calls out steps and icy patches; if in doubt, set the load down. Lift from the knees with a straight back, and always carry bulky items in pairs. Clear the walkway beforehand and grit it with chippings or sand – road salt is banned on pavements in Berlin.
Plan a break somewhere warm every one to two hours. Hot drinks and a warm meal give new energy; alcohol dilates the blood vessels and makes the body cool down faster. How to thank your helpers afterwards is covered in the article Tipping movers.
What does a move with professionals cost?
A fair question that we are happy to answer: 1-room flats cost from €349, 2-room flats from €605. If you live in a 3-room flat, you pay from €899, and for 4 rooms it is from €1,344. Houses and villas are always calculated individually. Important for anyone moving further: we charge long-distance moves from €4.25 per kilometre. Arrange a free survey today.
What you should know about pricing
The price depends primarily on the volume and the distance (from €4.25/km). But the floor and lift, as well as any necessary parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone), also have an effect. If you need additional furniture assembly or a part load, you should say so in advance.
