Living in Turnhout: districts parking ban and registration

Living in Turnhout
Between the Begijnhof and the Grote Markt: Turnhout for newcomers
Areas and daily life
A move to Turnhout takes you to a city of just over 48,000 inhabitants in the province of Antwerp that calls itself the "Speelkaartenstad" (playing-card city): the playing-card manufacturer Cartamundi has its headquarters here. Turnhout is also known for its 13th-century beguinage, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the castle of the Dukes of Brabant. Villages such as Zevendonk, Schorvoort, Parkwijk and Baarle-Heide belong to the city. We are based in Berlin and take care of packing, transport and assembly – more under Private move.
Whether a period flat in the centre or a terraced house in Zevendonk – one rule counts for moving day in Turnhout: anyone occupying parking spaces in front of the building needs a permit from the city, applied for at least three working days in advance. The city puts up the signs itself. No customs duties apply within the EU; how we plan the roughly 690 km from Berlin is explained under Long-distance moves. This makes your moving day predictable.

It lists the route, working time and the fee for the parking ban separately. Our liability for your household goods is governed by the German Commercial Code (HGB) (§ 451e: €620 per m³); additional insurance is possible.
Offers available individually, depending on effort, scheduling and the scope of services required.

After
moving in to Turnhout
A move to Turnhout has its own particularities: the parking ban in front of the building with three working days' notice, reporting the new address within eight days and the circulation plan that changes traffic routing in the centre. The choice of district – centre, Zevendonk or Schorvoort – also affects the logistics. Burgerzaken in the Stadskantoor (city office) works by appointment only. This is how your private move runs from door to door.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Turnhout
Turnhout's districts at a glance
The centre of Turnhout is shaped by the Grote Markt with the Sint-Pieterskerk, the 12th-century castle of the Dukes of Brabant and the 13th-century beguinage, a UNESCO World Heritage Site – ideal for anyone who values short distances. The R13 ring road partly encircles the city centre, and the E34 leads to Antwerp and Eindhoven.
The city also includes villages such as Zevendonk, Schorvoort, Parkwijk and Baarle-Heide, which are quieter than the centre. Take care when searching for an address: Oosthoven sounds like Turnhout but belongs to the neighbouring municipality of Oud-Turnhout – a different administration is responsible there for registration and parking bans.
Housing market, employers & quality of life in Turnhout
We do not quote specific rents or purchase prices because we have no verified source for them; compare current listings. As for the economy: Turnhout is a centre of the graphics industry. Besides the playing-card manufacturer Cartamundi, the sealant manufacturer Soudal and the coffee roaster Miko have their headquarters in the city, and Philips has been active in the city since 1955, now on a smaller scale. AZ Turnhout hospital is another major employer.
The Thomas More Hogeschool has a campus in Turnhout, and the De Warande cultural centre and the city park provide leisure. The station is the terminus of the line from Herentals and has connections to Antwerpen-Centraal and Brussels-South, while the E34 leads to Antwerp and Eindhoven. How we plan the journey from Berlin is described in our guide to the long-distance move.

Parking ban for a move in Turnhout: the "Inname openbaar domein" permit
Anyone who wants to park a removal van in front of the building in Turnhout needs, according to the city of Turnhout, a permit for the use of public space ("inname openbaar domein"). It applies to parking spaces, the carriageway, the pavement and the verge. For a move, a temporary access permit ("tijdelijke doorlaatvergunning") can also be applied for if the street could not otherwise be reached.
- Notice: if only parking spaces are involved, the application must be received at least three working days in advance. The day of the application and the first day of the works do not count.
- Application: online via the form on turnhout.spotbooking.be or in person at the Loket Wegen in the Stadskantoor by appointment (telephone 014 44 33 93).
- Fee 2026: according to the city, 3.70 euros per parking space (or per 6 m of carriageway occupied) per day, minimum 20 euros, plus a 24.40-euro administrative fee per application. For 2027 the city quotes 25.15 euros and 3.80 euros.
The city's technical services put up the signs two days before the start and collect them again afterwards. Check the signage before moving day. If it differs from your application, contact the Loket Wegen, and never move signs yourself. According to the city, a refund is only possible before the signs are in place. General information on the topic can be found on our page about the parking restriction zone; in Turnhout the city's rules apply.
After moving to Turnhout: reporting your address, parking and the city centre
Anyone moving to Turnhout or within Turnhout must, according to the city, report the new address "within eight days" of the move. There is an online form for this, which you should only fill in once you are actually living at the new address. The Burgerzaken – Bevolking (civil affairs – population) department in the Stadskantoor (Campus Blairon 200, 2300 Turnhout) works exclusively by appointment: telephone 014 44 33 65, email [email protected].
According to the city, there are paid parking zones in the centre, marked with zone signs. Payment is required there daily from 9 am to 8 pm, except on Sundays and public holidays. A new parking concept has applied in Turnhout since 1 January 2026. Parking permits ("parkeervergunning") allow parking in a zone without a ticket; the city describes the requirements and application on a separate page.
Traffic routing in the city centre is also changing: the "Binkenstad Bereikbaar" circulation plan is being implemented in two phases; the first is already in force according to the city, and the second follows on 4 January 2027. From that day, according to the city, buses will no longer run through the Gasthuisstraat. The pages we checked do not say whether restrictions for removal vehicles apply to your street; you can send questions to [email protected].
