Separating hazardous waste

Disposal guide
Hazardous waste before the move: separate it, don't pack it
Where to take paint and batteries
When clearing out the cellar, bathroom and storeroom, more hazardous waste often comes together than expected: half-full paint tins, varnish cans, thinners, old batteries, energy-saving bulbs, broken electrical appliances. None of these belong in household waste or in a moving box. Sort them into a box of their own two to three weeks before the move and hand them in beforehand – then they don't travel along unnecessarily and aren't left behind in the old flat either.
In Berlin, six BSR recycling centres accept hazardous substances from private households – according to BSR, up to 20 kg per substance per day free of charge. You can also hand in electrical appliances there or return them to a retailer. Whatever is left – furniture, boxes, household goods – we transport at a fixed price as part of a private move. If you wish, we take discarded furniture for disposal.

Hazardous substances out, move in
A fixed price for the transport after an inventory
Once the leftover paint and batteries have been handed in, the actual move remains. Call 01625978461: after the inventory we give you a fixed price for transport, carrying and, if you wish, disposal of old furniture. Hazardous waste is not included.
Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

What we take care of in a move – and what we don't
Furniture yes, hazardous substances no
We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and take care of packing, carrying, transport and, if you wish, disposal of old furniture. We do not transport hazardous waste such as paint, solvents or batteries – it belongs at a collection point, and it is best to hand it in before moving day. We give the move itself as a fixed price after the inventory; we are liable for your belongings under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre.

Six kinds of hazardous waste and where to take them
The same hazardous substances turn up again and again when moving. This overview shows where they belong. If in doubt, your waste company's A–Z of waste helps – in Berlin, the one from BSR.

A shared load without hazardous substances
With a shared load, your belongings share the loading space with other people's consignments. That makes it all the more important that no paint tins, chemicals or damaged rechargeable batteries are in the boxes. Hand in hazardous substances beforehand and pack only normal household goods.

Disposing
of things before the move
Three kinds of waste come together when you move: hazardous waste, bulky waste (old furniture) and electrical waste. Each kind has its own route. For long distances it is especially worth sorting out before a long-distance move, because every kilo travels with you. Which waste goes where at the recycling centre is explained in the article Recycling centre: what goes where.

Questions about hazardous waste when moving
What counts as hazardous waste when moving?
Hazardous waste includes, among other things, solvent-based paints and varnishes, thinners, acids and alkalis, aerosol cans with contents left, batteries and rechargeables, mercury-containing lamps and used oil. Electrical appliances are not hazardous waste in the strict sense, but they do not belong in household waste either. None of this should end up in the removal van, because it can leak, react or start fires.
Old cleaning agents and pesticides also belong in this group. Collect these things separately as soon as you start clearing out and label the box clearly so that nothing is packed by mistake.
How to dispose of it properly
Municipal collection points accept hazardous substances from private households – in Berlin, six BSR recycling centres (Behmstraße, Brunsbütteler Damm, Gradestraße, Hegauer Weg, Nordring, Oberspreestraße), according to BSR up to 20 kg per substance per day free of charge. Check the opening hours in good time so that handing things in does not clash with moving day.
Bring the substances in their original packaging if possible. Whatever furniture and household goods remain after sorting we transport as part of your private move; you take care of handing in the hazardous substances yourself beforehand.
