Living in the City of Zug: from the Old Town to Oberwil by the lake

Quarters and housing
Zug between the lake, the Zugerberg and Baar
Where to live in Zug
The City of Zug has just over 32,000 inhabitants and stretches from the north-eastern shore of Lake Zug up to the slopes of the Zugerberg. At its heart lies the Old Town with the Zytturm clock tower and Kolinplatz, and to the north, on the shore, the Vorstadt. Residential and commercial quarters line up on the flat Lorze plain; between Zug and Baar the municipal boundary is barely recognisable any more. To the south by the lake, the village of Oberwil and the Räbmatt estate belong to the city. More about our private move.
On moving day, access matters most: for driving bans the city issues residents a free access permit, and anyone leaving the vehicle on public land between 10 pm and 7 am needs a permit. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), plan the vehicle and carrying routes after the survey and then quote a fixed price; your goods are covered under the HGB. The route and customs are described on the page Moving Berlin – Zug.

What we look out for in Zug
Driving ban, night parking, customs
Zug is compact, but not accessible by vehicle everywhere: in the Old Town around the Zytturm and Kolinplatz there are driving bans, and on the slopes of the Zugerberg, where many houses have been built in recent years, we check hillside access and carrying routes. That is why we clarify the access permit and stopping place before the date and schedule unloading so that the lorry does not have to stand overnight. We are based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); at the border you present Form 18.44. We quote the fixed price after a survey. Destinations with their own page under locations.

What
to clarify in Zug
When moving to Zug, the practical questions revolve around three things: may the lorry enter the street, where may it stand, and where do boxes and old furniture go? For driving bans there is the free access permit, for brief parking outside marked spaces the commercial parking card (Gewerbeparkkarte), and the Ökihof on Industriestrasse accepts bulky items. Put out waste paper and cardboard before 7 am on collection day. Furniture that is not coming with you we clear in advance through house clearance in Berlin.

Questions about living in and moving to Zug
Old Town, Vorstadt, Lorze plain, Oberwil: the locations in Zug
The City of Zug was founded on the lakeshore at the beginning of the 13th century; the landmark of the Old Town is the 41.5-metre-high Zytturm, and on Kolinplatz stand buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries. Living here puts the lake and lanes on your doorstep, but for the move you have to allow for driving bans and little parking space. North of the Old Town, on the shore, lies the Vorstadt; in the Löberen quarter stands the Loreto Chapel.
On the Lorze plain north of the centre, many houses have been built in recent years, alongside commercial and industrial quarters; Zug and Baar have almost grown together here. Slightly off the beaten track lie the settlements of Lorzen, Chollermüli and Ammannsmatt. To the south on the lakeshore, Oberwil and Räbmatt belong to the city, as do various farmstead settlements on the Zugerberg. Which location suits you depends on your commute, school and car – view properties at different times of day.
Housing market and employers in Zug
We deliberately do not give reliable current rent figures; Wikipedia notes that the low taxes in the canton of Zug are offset by a high cost of living. The largest employer is Siemens Building Technologies with just over 1,900 employees, followed by the cantonal administration; then come V-Zug, the city administration and Zuger Kantonalbank. Glencore has its operational headquarters in neighbouring Baar, and since the 2010s the region has been known as Crypto Valley.
For commuters Zug is well placed: Zürich and Lucerne can be reached in 25 minutes by InterRegio, the Stadtbahn Zug runs to Baar and Lucerne, and the A14 has junctions in Zug and Baar. Zürich Airport is about 40 minutes away by car. Families check the route to school and childcare in their future quarter; the city also lets affordable flats according to fixed criteria.
