Senior moves: what families should look out for before the date

What to look out for

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and plans the move with you around the floor plan and the parents' pace.

In a senior move, a close look pays off as early as the new flat: are there steps at the entrance, a lift, a level-access shower, room for a rollator or wheelchair? Whatever is missing here can only be changed later with conversion work. Then pay attention to the floor plan: mark which furniture will fit before you sort – otherwise too many pieces come along and block the way. The surroundings matter too: how far are the doctor, pharmacy and shops, and how do the parents get there without a car? And let the parents have a say – people who help decide feel at home sooner.

With a care level (Pflegegrad), ask the long-term care insurer (Pflegekasse) before the move about a grant for measures to improve the living environment; under § 40 Abs. 4 SGB XI up to €4,180 per measure is possible if this makes home care possible or considerably easier. In the moving company's quote, look for a fixed price after a survey, items for packing and unpacking and clear information on liability – €620 per cubic metre by law. How we support senior moves is described under Senior move.

A quote you can check

Survey with the family, fixed price afterwards

Call us on 01625978461. We carry out the survey at a calm pace, ideally with relatives, and then send you a quote with a fixed price listing packing, dismantling, transport, reassembly and extras separately. That way you can compare at your leisure; the survey is free and without obligation.

Quotes available individually based on workload, scheduling and the desired scope of services.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

What matters in a senior move

Flat, furniture, quote, the day

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, for a senior move, take care of packing if you wish, dismantling, transport and reassembly according to the floor plan, parking restriction and disposal. With us, as with any company, make sure the quote is prepared after a survey, names every item and states the liability: €620 per cubic metre under § 451e HGB. For antiques, additional insurance is available.

Check for barriers

Steps, door widths, lift and shower in the new flat decide how independent life there can remain – check these before signing the tenancy agreement.

Furniture by floor plan

Only what fits on the floor plan comes along; that way paths stay clear for a rollator or wheelchair – with our furniture transport we set things up exactly like that.

An itemised quote

Packing, unpacking, parking restriction and disposal should be listed separately in the quote – only then can you see what the fixed price really includes.

Company on the day

A familiar person accompanies the parents throughout moving day, making sure of breaks and medication – this does not replace a moving company, and vice versa.
DON'T FORGET

Six points that are often overlooked

Besides the flat and the quote, a senior move involves points that only become noticeable when it is too late. You should clarify these six early. Most of them take just a phone call or a look at the contract.

01

Notice period

Tenants give three months' notice, at the latest on the third working day of a month – as a rule also when moving into a care home.
02

Apply before work begins

Apply for the care insurer's grant before you commission anything; whether the move counts is decided by the insurer case by case.
03

Care home rules

Care homes often allow only a few pieces of your own furniture; check the measurements and rules before the armchair and the chest of drawers are packed.
04

Medication within reach

Medication, glasses, hearing aid and ID belong in a bag that never goes into the lorry but stays with the companion.
05

Transfer the emergency call

The home emergency call service, care service and meals on wheels need the new address and the moving date so that nothing is missed on the first day.
06

Don't forget tax

For private moves, 20% of the labour costs, up to €4,000 a year, reduce income tax (§ 35a EStG) – pay by bank transfer.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Only a few pieces of furniture?

What to look out for with a shared load
With a shared load, several consignments share the loading space on the same route. For individual pieces of furniture or boxes, this lowers the costs considerably. Make sure the collection and delivery period is agreed in writing, and plan the most important things for moving-in day on a fixed date.

What matters when

What you should look out for in a senior move changes with the phase: with the new flat, with the quote and on moving day itself. All deadlines sorted by week can be found in the senior move checklist. If someone is moving to be near their children in another city, you will find advice under long-distance moves. The mistakes families make most often – from starting too late to taking too much furniture – are covered in a separate article in the guide.

The new flat

Steps, lift, door widths, shower and how close the doctor and shops are: checking these points before signing the tenancy agreement saves later conversion work or a second move in a senior move. Ask about the caretaker and the neighbourhood too.

The quote

Fixed price after a survey, packing and unpacking as items, liability and additional insurance stated: check the quote with the family before you sign and confirm the date.

Moving day

A familiar companion, the bag with medication, the bed and armchair first: with furniture transport according to the floor plan, the new flat becomes a home on the very first evening. The companion stays until the evening; lamps, pictures and the familiar box quickly make the room feel lived in.

FAQ

Questions: what to look out for in a senior move?

Costs, services, duration, liability, relatives, household clearance and long-distance moves – answered briefly.
The costs depend on volume, floor, lift and extras such as packing, unpacking or storage. Guide prices by number of rooms are in the price overview on this page; we give you the fixed price after a free survey. The tax bonus and, with a care level, a grant from the care insurer can reduce the costs.

Process of a senior move

It starts with a survey at a calm pace, ideally with relatives. We go through the floor plan of the new flat, clarify what comes along and what should be packed, and then give you a fixed price with every item listed.

On moving day a familiar person accompanies the parents. We dismantle, transport and set up the furniture according to plan, the bed and armchair first. Make sure the paths stay clear. Finally you walk through the old flat with the landlord and sign the handover report. Registration follows within two weeks.

Costs and financial help for a senior move

The cost of a senior move depends on volume, floor, lift and extras such as packing, unpacking or storage. Make sure the fixed price is drawn up after a survey and names every item.

With a care level, the care insurer may contribute (§ 40 Abs. 4 SGB XI, up to €4,180 per measure, case by case, application before work begins); for private moves, 20% of the labour costs are deductible under § 35a EStG. Also check whether packing and unpacking are listed as separate items in the quote – in a senior move in particular, they are often the biggest difference between two quotes.

Transparent prices for every type of move

Whether small or large – our moving prices are calculated fairly. A 1-room flat moves from €365, a 2-room flat from €589. For 3 rooms costs start from €879, for 4 rooms from €1,344. For a house or villa you always receive an individual quote after a survey. We charge long-distance moves from €4.20/km. Feel free to use our free survey to clarify all the details.

Everything around your moving price

The final price depends on the volume of your household goods, the distance travelled (from €4.20/km) and local conditions such as floor and lift. For a smooth process we also recommend a parking restriction zone. In addition, furniture assembly and shared load are available.
