Moving day guide

Tipping when moving: voluntary, but welcome

How much, when, how

Unsere Firma is based in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); our fixed price applies with or without a tip – here is what other customers usually give.

Tipping movers is not an obligation in Germany but a voluntary thank-you. Anyone who carries heavy furniture through narrow stairwells, packs carefully and keeps moving day calm appreciates recognition. With a private move by a moving company, a small tip at the end of the day is common, but nobody may expect it: the agreed price covers the work, and a tip comes on top.

The amount usually depends on effort and satisfaction. Guides often mention €10 to €20 per mover, and more for very strenuous moves – there is no rule. For employed movers, tips from customers are tax-free (§ 3 No. 51 EStG). What is included in the fixed price is stated in your quote; more about our services under private move.

MAXIMUM CARE

What the price covers

Work paid, tip voluntary

We are based in Berlin (Stromstraße 21) and, after the assessment, quote a fixed price for packing, carrying, transport and any extra services booked. That pays for the team's work – a tip changes neither the price nor the care taken. If you are satisfied and would like to give something, you can; if you do not, you get the same move. For damage to household goods we are liable under § 451e HGB at €620 per cubic metre. Destinations with their own page can be found under locations.

Packing

With the packing service the team packs crockery, books and clothes. People who have a lot packed often give a little more as a tip – but it is not an obligation.

Carrying

Fourth floor without a lift, washing machine, wall unit: with furniture transport, carrying is the hardest work – and many customers say thank you for it.

Assembly

With a move with assembly, the bed is up by the evening. A drink in between is often just as welcome as money at the end.

Parking restriction

Short distances save energy: with a parking restriction zone (Halteverbotszone) the lorry stands in front of the door. On request we apply for it and set it up for you.
SHORT AND CLEAR

Six rules on tipping

A tip is a gesture, not a bill. These six rules help if you are unsure whether, how much and how to thank your movers. In the end, you alone decide – based on effort, satisfaction and budget.

01

Voluntary

There is no obligation and no entitlement. You give a tip if you are satisfied – not because it is expected.
02

According to effort

Floor, weight, duration and weather all play a part. A long day in an old building without a lift is worth more than a short move on the ground floor.
03

Cash to the team

Cash at the end of the day is customary, either to each person individually or to the team leader, who shares it equally within the team.
04

Drinks count

Water, coffee or something to eat during the day are a form of recognition that many movers value just as much.
05

Tax-free for employees

Voluntary tips from customers to employed movers are tax-free (§ 3 No. 51 EStG). They do not appear on the moving company's invoice.
06

Stay honest

If you were dissatisfied, giving no tip is perfectly fine. It is better to raise the problem openly so it can be resolved.
FOR SMALL LOADS

Tipping with a shared load too?

Small volume, small thank-you

With a shared load, your household goods travel with other consignments on the same route, and the team is often only with you briefly at collection and delivery. A small tip or a drink is possible but by no means expected, including with us.

GOOD TO KNOW

All
about moving day

Refreshments, process, costs

Besides tipping movers, other things make moving day pleasant: packed and labelled boxes, cleared routes, a contact person who can be reached and something to drink. For long-distance moves with a long drive too: a thank-you is welcome but not an obligation. If you only need strong hands without transport, take a look at moving help.

Before the move

Pack and label boxes, clear the routes, chill some drinks, have some cash ready. Being prepared makes the day easier for you and the team – with or without a tip. It often saves time when carrying, too.

During the move

Stay reachable, answer questions quickly, allow breaks. With furniture transport and a small removal, water and coffee are a simple gesture that makes a big difference, especially in summer.

At the end of the day

Walk briefly through the new flat, raise any obvious damage straight away and, if you are satisfied, give the team a tip. Report visible damage no later than the day after delivery, and hidden damage within 14 days.

FAQ

Questions about tipping when moving

Obligation, amount, handover, sharing, dissatisfaction, refreshments and tax – answered briefly.
No, tipping movers is not an obligation but a voluntary form of recognition. Many customers are still happy to give something if they are satisfied with the team. With us, the work is paid for with the agreed fixed price; a tip changes nothing about that. If you want to give something, it is best done at the end of the day, in cash and in person.

How much is it customary to tip when moving?

The amount of a tip for movers depends on the volume of the move, the floors, the duration and your satisfaction. There is no fixed rule; guides often mention €10 to €20 per mover for an average move, and more for large or very strenuous moves.

For a private move with several rooms and heavy furniture, many people give a little more. What matters is that it stays voluntary and fits your budget.

A tip in cash or in kind?

Besides cash, movers are often pleased with drinks or a snack during the work, especially on hot days. This gesture shows appreciation and costs little.

For longer long-distance moves with a long driving time, some refreshments at the start are just as welcome. Cash at the end of the day remains the most common and most direct form of recognition, however.

What your move costs

These are the prices you can expect from us:

  • 1 room – from €354
  • 2 rooms – from €594
  • 3 rooms – from €889
  • 4 rooms – from €1,299
  • House/villa – individual quote
  • Long-distance move – from €4.25/km

What you should know about moving costs

The price of a move depends primarily on the volume and the distance, which we calculate at €4.25/km. Other factors are the floor, whether there is a lift and a parking restriction zone. Furniture assembly and a shared load can also be booked as options.
