Answers on duration, parking restrictions, costs and registration
A move within Berlin, for example from Neukölln to Prenzlauer Berg, usually takes between 4 and 6 hours for a 2-room flat, depending on the floor, lift and parking situation on site.
Moving in Berlin: the process & local particularities
A move in Berlin differs considerably from a move in smaller cities – if only because of the sheer size of the capital with its 12 districts and 97 neighbourhoods. Anyone moving from Spandau to Marzahn easily covers 25 kilometres, while a move within the S-Bahn ring often involves only a few streets but has to contend with narrow neighbourhood streets, cobblestones and little parking space. As a removal company in Berlin based in Moabit, we take these differences into account and plan every home move individually according to district, route and building type.
Typical of Berlin are the many period flats (Altbau) from the late 19th century with high ceilings, narrow stairwells and no lift – especially in Prenzlauer Berg, Friedrichshain or Neukölln. Careful carrying is worth its weight in gold here, because getting a piano or a bulky wardrobe up four floors without a lift takes routine and the right tools. In prefab housing estates (Plattenbau) such as those in Marzahn or Hellersdorf, on the other hand, there are usually lifts, but often long distances from the car park to the front door.
A typical move with us begins with a free survey or a virtual walk-through, followed by a transparent fixed-price quote. On moving day we take care of professional packing, transport in our own vehicles through central Berlin or via the Berlin Ring, and reassembling the furniture at the destination. Registering a parking restriction zone is often part of the standard process in densely built neighbourhoods such as Kreuzberg 36 or Wedding, as free parking spaces are scarce there. This is how we make sure your move in Berlin runs smoothly, predictably and without nasty surprises.
Twelve districts, twelve starting points for your move
Berlin is a patchwork of very different residential areas, and this has a considerable influence on planning a move. An overview of the twelve districts, each with what matters for a move:
- Mitte: the government quarter, the central station and period buildings in Wedding – this is where we are based, on Stromstraße in Moabit.
- Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg: the Oberbaum Bridge links the two neighbourhoods across the Spree; period buildings, rear courtyards and high pressure on parking.
- Pankow: late-19th-century buildings in Prenzlauer Berg, new housing developments in Buch and Karow.
- Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf: Kurfürstendamm and period buildings with high ceilings, villas in Grunewald and Westend.
- Spandau: an old town with a citadel, new builds in the Wasserstadt on the Havel.
- Reinickendorf: the garden suburb of Frohnau, Tegel with its former airport and Lake Tegel.
- Steglitz-Zehlendorf: detached houses and villas, with Schloßstraße as the main shopping street.
- Tempelhof-Schöneberg: period buildings in Schöneberg and Friedenau, detached houses in Lichtenrade.
- Neukölln: dense period buildings in the north, the tower blocks of Gropiusstadt in the south.
- Treptow-Köpenick: the Adlershof science park and Köpenick's old town on the Spree and Dahme.
- Marzahn-Hellersdorf: large prefab estates with lifts, detached houses in Mahlsdorf and Kaulsdorf.
- Lichtenberg: prefab blocks in Neu-Hohenschönhausen, villas in Karlshorst.
For each of these districts we adapt the vehicle size, team size and time slot. In densely populated inner-city districts we often use smaller, manoeuvrable vans, and on the outskirts larger lorries. While there is usually space in front of the house in Zehlendorf, in Kreuzberg or Neukölln we often need an official parking restriction zone to position the removal van directly outside the door.
Moving costs in Berlin: transparent prices for your move
Moving costs in Berlin depend on several factors: flat size, floor, the distance between the old and new address, and the additional services required, such as a parking restriction zone or house clearance. As a Berlin removal company we calculate transparently and without hidden costs – our prices apply to moves within Berlin and to the nearby surrounding area such as Potsdam or Falkensee.
| Flat size | Price from | Typical examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1-room flat | from €344 | Student flat-share in Friedrichshain, single apartment in Wedding |
| 2-room flat | from €615 | A couple moving from Neukölln to Schöneberg |
| 3-room flat | from €905 | A family moving from Pankow to Steglitz |
| Long-distance move from Berlin | from €4.20/km | Berlin – Hamburg, Berlin – Munich |
| Parking restriction zone | €30–100/day | depending on district and signage period |
In addition, factors such as whether there is a lift, the number of floors in Berlin period buildings and the need for packing materials affect the final total. If, for example, you only want to transport a few pieces of furniture, you can use our part-load transport and save considerably, as the transport is combined with other moves. For larger households, a fixed-price quote is often worthwhile, which we prepare after a free survey – on site or by video. This way you keep a full overview of the actual costs of your move in Berlin from the outset, without any unpleasant surprises on moving day.
Parking restriction zones & parking for your move in Berlin
Parking space is in short supply in many Berlin neighbourhoods – especially in districts such as Prenzlauer Berg, Kreuzberg, Mitte or Charlottenburg. Without a reserved space directly outside the front door, the carrying distance quickly grows by several hundred metres, which costs time and money. That is why applying for a parking restriction zone is part of our standard repertoire as a removal company in Berlin.
We take care of the entire application with the road traffic authority of the district concerned – whether Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Tempelhof-Schöneberg or Pankow. According to service.berlin.de, the processing time is about four weeks on average, which is why we recommend applying for the zone early. The cost of a parking restriction zone is between €30 and €100 per day depending on the street and duration, based on the length of signage and the district administration.
- Application to the road traffic authority of the district in which the zone is to apply
- Signs put up in good time before the moving date
- Legally sound protection against illegal parking on moving day
- Shorter carrying distances, especially in narrow period-building neighbourhoods
Especially in busy residential areas such as Kollwitzplatz, the Bergmannkiez or around Boxhagener Platz, a designated parking restriction zone is often the decisive factor for a smooth process. Without one, our removal van may have to park several streets away – this costs unnecessary time and increases the risk of damage when carrying over longer distances or uneven cobblestones. With a professionally organised zone, on the other hand, we secure direct access, short distances and a much faster move for you – whether in densely built Wedding or in the quieter residential area of Zehlendorf.
Long-distance moves from Berlin: across Germany and to the surrounding area
Berlin is conveniently located at the centre of a well-developed motorway network – the Berlin Ring (A10) connects the city with the A9 towards Munich, the A2 towards Hanover/Cologne and the A11 towards the north. This makes a long-distance move from Berlin logistically easy to plan, whether you are heading to the nearby Brandenburg countryside or to another major German city.
Typical distances we regularly cover for our customers:
- Berlin – Potsdam: approx. 30 km
- Berlin – Hamburg: approx. 290 km via the A24
- Berlin – Leipzig: approx. 190 km via the A9
- Berlin – Cologne: approx. 570 km via the A2
- Berlin – Munich: approx. 590 km via the A9
For a long-distance move we calculate transparently from €4.20 per kilometre, with the exact distance, the moving volume and any intermediate stops included in the calculation. If you do not want to move your entire household, you benefit from our part-load transport – here your belongings are combined with other loads on the same route, which is considerably cheaper than an exclusive long-distance lorry, especially for smaller volumes.
As many Berliners relocate for work – for example from the Adlershof science park to other university cities, or from the start-up scene in Mitte to other major cities – we carry out long-distance moves throughout Germany and also to other European countries. We handle the complete route planning, take care of parking restriction zones at both locations and agree delivery dates flexibly with you, so that your long-distance move from Berlin runs just as smoothly as a local move within the city.
Our removal company's services for all of Berlin
As a Berlin removal company we offer a broad range of services that goes far beyond classic furniture transport. Our teams are on the road in all districts – from Spandau in the west to Marzahn-Hellersdorf in the east, from Reinickendorf in the north to Steglitz-Zehlendorf in the south.
- Home move: from a flat-share in Friedrichshain to a family flat in Pankow
- Company relocation: for offices, practices and start-ups in Mitte or Charlottenburg
- Senior move: organised sensitively and with minimal barriers, including support with visits to the authorities
- Student move: affordable fixed prices for flat-share rooms around FU, HU and TU Berlin
- Piano transport: special equipment for period flats without a lift
- House clearance: professional clearing of cellars, attics and entire flats
- Part-load transport: low-cost transport of smaller moving volumes
- Parking restriction zone: legally sound reservation of parking space on moving day
All services are coordinated with one another and can be combined flexibly – for example a senior move with simultaneous clearance of the old flat, or a company relocation with part-load transport for additional files and office equipment. Our vehicle fleet is tailored to Berlin conditions: manoeuvrable vans for narrow neighbourhoods in Kreuzberg or Neukölln, larger lorries for moves from the outer districts. Through the combination of local know-how, a planned team and modern equipment, we ensure that every move – small or large – runs on schedule, safely and without stress.
Office and company relocations in Berlin, professionally organised
As a start-up capital and business location, Berlin is characterised by a high density of offices, law firms, medical practices and coworking spaces – especially in Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and around Potsdamer Platz. A company relocation places particular demands on planning and execution, because downtime costs real money and sensitive data must be transported securely.
As a removal company in Berlin, we usually schedule office moves outside regular business hours or at the weekend in order to disrupt operations as little as possible. Our approach includes:
- Taking stock and making an inventory of IT equipment, filing cabinets and furniture
- Dismantling and professional reassembly of office furniture
- Secure transport of sensitive documents and IT hardware
- Coordination of parking restriction zones at both locations, for example between Charlottenburg and Mitte
- Flexible time slots, including night and weekend appointments
We particularly often handle moves from classic office locations such as City West or Charlottenburg to more modern office complexes in the Adlershof, Mediaspree or Europacity area near the central station. Practice relocations, for example of dental or physiotherapy practices, are also part of our everyday work – special sensitivity is required here when transporting medical equipment. For larger companies spread over several floors, we draw up a detailed moving plan, including labelling all boxes and items of furniture by department, so that everything quickly finds its place again at the new location. This is how we minimise downtime and make sure your team can get back to productive work as quickly as possible – regardless of whether the new location is in Berlin itself or in the surrounding area.
Student moves in Berlin: process, booking and prices
With universities such as the Freie Universität, the Humboldt-Universität, the TU Berlin and numerous universities of applied sciences, Berlin attracts thousands of students every year – and demand for affordable, uncomplicated moves is correspondingly high. Our student move offer is tailored specifically to flat-share rooms, small apartments and tight budgets, and starts from €344 for a 1-room flat.
Typical student neighbourhoods are around the campuses in Dahlem (FU), in Mitte (HU) and in Charlottenburg and Wilmersdorf (TU) – but also in Friedrichshain and Neukölln, where many flat-shares are found. As students often move several times and usually have little budget, we offer compact fixed-price packages including a small van, two removal helpers and basic packing materials.
Our booking process is deliberately kept simple:
- Enquiry by phone, email or online form with address, floor and approximate moving volume
- Free assessment of the effort involved, with a short video walk-through if needed
- Binding fixed-price quote within 24 hours
- Scheduling – even at short notice, as students often have flexible moving dates
- Carrying out the move, including transport and dismantling and assembly of furniture
If required, we add part-load transport to the student move if only a few boxes and a bed need to be transported, or a house clearance if there is still bulky waste when moving out. This keeps moving affordable, predictable and uncomplicated for students in Berlin – from the first enquiry to the last box in the new flat-share.
Applying for a parking restriction for your move in Berlin: district, fee and lead time
For moving day in Berlin you need temporary parking restrictions outside both the old and the new flat. According to the state's service portal (service.berlin.de), the responsible body is the road traffic authority of the district in which the parking restriction is to be set up. In some districts it is part of the public order office (Ordnungsamt), in others part of the roads and green spaces office. So if you are moving between two districts, you submit two applications to two authorities.
The application is informal; the portal does not mention any special requirements. As a fee, service.berlin.de lists a minimum fee of 21 euros; the actual amount depends on scope and duration. The portal gives the average processing time as about four weeks. So plan early and do not submit the application only in the week before the move.
Important to know: the district authorities issue an order, but no traffic signs. The signs must be put up by a company authorised to do so, such as a firm specialising in roadworks safety. Without a valid order and properly placed signs, a parking restriction is not effective.
Our depot is at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit. You can read how we support you with the organisation on the page about the parking restriction zone. You will find a brief guide to urgent dates in our article on short-notice moves.
Moving in Berlin: re-registration, bulky waste and changing district
Berlin consists of twelve districts, and many dealings with the authorities depend on location. Registering your new flat is easier: according to service.berlin.de, you can use the service at all Berlin citizens' offices, no matter which district you live in. The deadline is 14 days after moving in. An appointment is required to register in person; online it works with a BundID and an ID card with the eID function. There are no fees. The landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung) is important; according to the portal, a tenancy agreement does not replace it.
Bulky waste often builds up before a move. Berlin's city cleaning service (BSR) collects it for private households. According to the BSR fee overview, the standard collection costs a flat 100 euros for up to 5 m³ (collection within 6 to 15 working days), the economy option 50 euros from the 16th working day and the express option 96 euros for up to 2 m³ within 5 working days. You can drop off smaller volumes of up to 3 m³ at a recycling centre free of charge. You can book online or by phone with the BSR.
Our guide to moving to Berlin and our guide for newcomers offer detailed information on residential areas, costs and everyday life. If you are leaving Berlin for the surrounding area, you will find pointers on the pages for Potsdam and Falkensee.
