Frequently asked questions about moving in Berlin Lichtenberg
On many streets around Lichtenberg town hall and in the Weitlingkiez parking is scarce, so we recommend a no-parking zone. On quieter side streets, a short-term reservation may be enough depending on the situation – we check this individually during the survey.
Lichtenberg at a glance: a district between Frankfurter Allee and the edge of the city
Anyone moving in Lichtenberg needs a team that looks closely in advance – at the streets around Lichtenberg town hall, the dense traffic on Frankfurter Allee and the differences between prefab blocks, period buildings and villages. As a Berlin moving company from Moabit, we handle home removals, company relocations and everything in between for you.
Lichtenberg lies east of central Berlin and is well connected to the city centre via the S41/S42 Ringbahn lines, the S3, S5, S7 and S75 and the U5. The B 1/B 5 via Frankfurter Allee and Landsberger Allee also make the district easy to reach for moves to and from other parts of the city. Whether you are moving from Weitlingstraße to a new build in Karlshorst or relocating your office from Fennpfuhl to the city centre – we plan routes and roadworks in advance.
Our range of services extends from the classic home removal and company relocation to services such as piano transport. Senior citizens who want to downsize their home in the Fennpfuhl neighbourhood to suit their age also benefit from our sensitive senior move service.
As Lichtenberg, with its ten neighbourhoods from Rummelsburg and Fennpfuhl to Malchow, Wartenberg and Falkenberg, combines very different types of housing, we tailor every move individually – whether a narrow period staircase or a wide new-build lift on the Rummelsburger Bucht. This way your move into, out of or within Lichtenberg runs smoothly, transparently and on time.
The ten Lichtenberg neighbourhoods and what they mean for your move
The Lichtenberg district consists of ten neighbourhoods, each of which presents a move with different tasks. That is why we look at every address beforehand and plan accordingly.
- Lichtenberg: gives the district its name, with the neo-Gothic town hall on Möllendorffstraße and the memorial in the former Stasi headquarters on Normannenstraße.
- Fennpfuhl: a large housing estate from the 1970s around Fennpfuhlpark, the most densely populated neighbourhood in the district.
- Friedrichsfelde: Tierpark zoo with Schloss Friedrichsfelde, the U5 and prefab blocks from the 1960s to the 1990s.
- Karlshorst: a villa colony from 1895 onwards, the trotting track and the Museum Berlin-Karlshorst at the site of the 1945 surrender.
- Rummelsburg: period buildings in the Kaskelkiez, the Weitlingkiez by Lichtenberg station and new builds on the Rummelsburger Bucht.
- Alt-Hohenschönhausen: the district's largest neighbourhood by area, with Orankesee lake, an old village centre and the Mies van der Rohe House.
- Neu-Hohenschönhausen: a 1980s housing development and the neighbourhood with the most inhabitants, connected via the S75.
- Falkenberg: an old linear village, on whose edge the M4 and M17 trams terminate; around 1,200 new flats have been built at Gehrensee since 2016.
- Malchow: a village of around 600 inhabitants, with a manor house on Dorfstraße and the Malchower Aue.
- Wartenberg: listed farmhouses on Dorfstraße and the Wartenberger Feldmark.
For us, this diversity means: a move in Karlshorst often needs different logistics from a move within the prefab blocks of Neu-Hohenschönhausen, and in Malchow or Wartenberg the farm entrance and garden path matter more than the lift. Around Frankfurter Allee and in the Weitlingkiez, on the other hand, things quickly get tight. That is why we check the address, building and access before every job, so that your moving day runs smoothly.
Planning period-building and new-build moves in Lichtenberg properly
Like hardly any other Berlin district, Lichtenberg combines contrasting types of housing: historic period buildings, GDR prefab blocks and modern new-build projects. A move in Lichtenberg needs its own strategy for each type of building.
In the period-building quarters around Weitlingstraße, the Kaskelkiez and Loeperplatz we often find narrow stairwells, high ceilings and no lifts. Here we rely on careful carrying, suitable packing material and, if needed, a furniture lift to get bulky items such as wardrobes or pianos upstairs safely. Especially for piano transport to third or fourth floors, a precise preliminary survey is a must.
The prefab estates in Fennpfuhl and in Alt- and Neu-Hohenschönhausen usually have working lifts, but also cramped cellar compartments and long escape routes to the entrance. Here good timing matters above all, so that the lift does not become a bottleneck.
In the new residential quarters on the Rummelsburger Bucht or in modern building projects in Karlshorst, access is usually more generous, but the property management often has stricter rules, such as fixed delivery times or protective measures for stairwells and lifts.
Our checklist for each type of building:
- Period building: check floor, ceiling height, stair width and need for a furniture lift
- Prefab block: note lift size, cellar access and the route from the parking space to the entrance
- New build: property management rules, delivery times, protective film
If bulky waste or old fittings are left over when you move out, we take care of them at the same time through our house clearance – so your old flat is left broom-clean, whether a period flat in the Kaskelkiez or a prefab flat in Hohenschönhausen.
Applying for a no-parking zone for your move in Lichtenberg
A smooth moving day starts with a free parking space right outside the door. Especially in densely built areas such as around Lichtenberg town hall, Frankfurter Allee or Weitlingstraße, this is hardly possible without a reservation. We apply for a no-parking zone (Halteverbotszone) for you in good time with the responsible authorities of the Lichtenberg district office.
In the prefab estates of Fennpfuhl and Neu-Hohenschönhausen there are more parking spaces, but they are often occupied during the day – here an official no-parking sign ensures that nobody parks in the reserved area on moving day. In Karlshorst and on the Rummelsburger Bucht, where removal vans cannot stop everywhere on narrow residential streets, a zone set up in advance is particularly important to save time and nerves.
Our service for your no-parking zone in Lichtenberg includes:
- Application to the responsible road traffic authority
- Putting up the signs in good time before the moving date
- Documentation for any objections to fines
- Coordination with residents and property management
Depending on the street, period and signage effort, a no-parking zone costs between 30 and 100 euros per day. In busy areas such as Frankfurter Allee the upper end of the price range can be realistic, while on quieter side streets in Malchow or Falkenberg it is usually cheaper. We include the no-parking zone transparently in your overall quote, so there are no hidden costs. This way you start moving day with clear access, short carrying distances and no stress over blocked spaces – a decisive advantage in a district with such varied buildings as Lichtenberg.
Moving costs in Lichtenberg: transparent prices at a glance
The moving costs in Lichtenberg depend on several factors: the size of the flat, the floor, the distance and any additional services required. We calculate every move individually, but are happy to give you initial guidance based on our standard prices.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| Move of a 1-room flat | from €369 |
| Move of a 2-room flat | from €594 |
| Move of a 3-room flat | from €899 |
| Long-distance move (nationwide) | from €4.25 per km |
| No-parking zone | €30–100 per day |
These prices are guide values for moves within Lichtenberg and for moves to or from other Berlin districts. If, for example, you only want to transport a few pieces of furniture, our part load saves you real money compared with a complete removal van. Students who often switch between flat-share rooms in Fennpfuhl or near HTW Berlin in Karlshorst benefit from our affordable student move rate.
The following factors influence the specific costs of your move:
- Size of the flat and number of pieces of furniture
- Floor and whether there is a lift (relevant above all in period buildings in the Kaskelkiez and the Weitlingkiez)
- Distance between the old and new address
- Additional services such as a no-parking zone, packing service or house clearance
- Date: weekend dates and the end of the month are usually in higher demand
After a short survey – by video if you prefer – you receive a binding fixed-price quote from us with no hidden costs. This way you know from the outset exactly what moving costs in Lichtenberg to plan for, whether it is a small single flat in Fennpfuhl or an entire house in Karlshorst.
Popular moving routes to and from Lichtenberg
Many of our customers do not just move within Lichtenberg, but to or from other Berlin districts. Thanks to the good connections via the Ringbahn, S-Bahn and Frankfurter Allee, the following routes are among our most frequent jobs.
| Route | Approximate distance |
|---|---|
| Lichtenberg – Friedrichshain | approx. 4 km |
| Lichtenberg – Prenzlauer Berg | approx. 7 km |
| Lichtenberg – Kreuzberg | approx. 9 km |
| Lichtenberg – Moabit | approx. 11 km |
| Lichtenberg – Wedding | approx. 12 km |
Routes to the north and west of Berlin are also in demand, for example to Niederschönhausen, Gesundbrunnen or even as far as Haselhorst in Spandau. For anyone moving to Lichtenberg from a period flat in the Hansaviertel or near the Tiergarten, we plan the removal van's route in advance to avoid traffic jams on the A100 city ring wherever possible.
For all these routes we calculate the driving time realistically and coordinate the loading and unloading times with both no-parking zones – at the old and the new home. For long-distance moves, for example to the area around Berlin or other federal states, our company relocation and long-distance moving service applies, with a fair per-kilometre rate. This way, whether in the city or across Germany, you are on the safe side with Praktik Transport und Umzüge.
Our services for your move in Lichtenberg
As a Berlin moving company from Moabit, we offer the full range of services for your move in Lichtenberg – from a single flat to an entire office site.
- Home removal: for flats and houses in all neighbourhoods, from Fennpfuhl to Karlshorst.
- Company relocation: for offices and businesses along Frankfurter Allee and in the Herzbergstraße commercial areas.
- Part load: an affordable solution for smaller moves or single pieces of furniture.
- House clearance: household dissolutions and cellar clearances, including older housing stock around Loeperplatz.
- No-parking zone: a legally sound application for free parking spaces on moving day.
- Piano transport: safe transport of upright and grand pianos, including to upper floors without a lift.
- Senior move: sensitive support with an age-appropriate move, for example from large period flats into smaller units.
- Student move: fair flat rates for flat-share rooms near HTW Berlin in Karlshorst.
Each of these services naturally includes a basic cleaning of the transport vehicle, a planned team and high-quality packing material. On request we also take care of complete furniture assembly at the new home, professional dismantling of lamps and kitchens, and the final cleaning of your old flat.
Especially in such a varied district as Lichtenberg – with period buildings, prefab blocks and modern new builds side by side – it pays to combine several services: for example, clearing out the old cellar, a no-parking zone outside the new address and piano transport to the new flat on a single moving day. We coordinate all the building blocks so that your move runs efficiently, safely and stress-free.

No-parking zone for your move in Lichtenberg: Roads and Green Spaces Office, fee, lead time
In Lichtenberg, the road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde) is responsible for the no-parking zone on moving day; according to service.berlin.de it is part of the district office's Roads and Green Spaces Office (Straßen- und Grünflächenamt). The application goes to the authority of the district in which the no-parking zone is to be set up. So anyone moving within Lichtenberg submits it where the removal van will later stand.
Service Berlin describes the procedure as follows:
- Informal application, no special requirements.
- Minimum fee 21.00 euros, depending on scope and duration.
- Average processing time about 4 weeks.
- What is issued is the order. You obtain the signs yourself, for example through a company that secures construction sites.
For streets such as Frankfurter Allee or Weitlingstraße: across Berlin, the central road traffic authority at the Senate Department is generally responsible for main roads, and the district office for side streets. The surest way to find out which office is responsible for your address is to ask the Lichtenberg Roads and Green Spaces Office directly.
In the application, state the street, house number, date, time and the required length, so that the authority can assess the scope. As the fee depends on scope and duration according to Service Berlin, it is worth applying for the no-parking zone only as long and as large as necessary. The traffic signs must be in place in good time before moving day.
You can read about the other steps involved in moving in our guide Applying for a no-parking zone. More about our offer can be found under no-parking zone and home removal.
Prefab block, villa, new build: moving through the Lichtenberg neighbourhoods
Lichtenberg consists of several neighbourhoods with very different types of housing. According to berlin.de, Fennpfuhl was home to the first large prefab housing estate in former East Berlin, which later served as a model for Marzahn and Hohenschönhausen. In Friedrichsfelde, prefab high-rises shape the townscape, most of which have since been renovated. Karlshorst, by contrast, is considered a villa district and used to be called the "Dahlem of the East".
According to berlin.de, Rummelsburg is characterised by Gründerzeit and industrial buildings, plus new residential complexes. In Neu-Hohenschönhausen and Alt-Hohenschönhausen, large housing estates were built on the Fennpfuhl model. In Falkenberg and Malchow, too, we look at access and the carrying route in advance, because according to berlin.de there are also period buildings and detached houses between the prefab blocks in Lichtenberg.
What does this mean for your moving day? In a prefab block, the lift, the floor and whether the property management sets times for the goods lift are what matter most. In a villa or detached house, access and stairs count for more. We record both before the date.
According to the BSR, you can drop off items you have sorted out free of charge at a recycling centre for amounts of up to 3 cubic metres. If you have the bulky waste collected, the BSR quotes flat rates from 50 euros for up to 5 cubic metres depending on the tariff (collection then from the 16th working day). More on this in the article Disposing of bulky waste properly. You can find moving destinations in the neighbouring district under Marzahn-Hellersdorf.
