Frequently asked questions about moving in Berlin Pankow
The Pankow district includes Prenzlauer Berg, Weißensee, Blankenburg, Heinersdorf, Karow, Stadtrandsiedlung Malchow, Blankenfelde, Buch, Französisch Buchholz, Niederschönhausen, Pankow, Rosenthal and Wilhelmsruh, among others. We handle moves in all of these neighbourhoods.
Pankow at a glance: period buildings in the south, village cores in the north
Pankow covers around 103 square kilometres and, after Treptow-Köpenick, is Berlin's second-largest district by area. Pankow stretches from densely built-up Prenzlauer Berg in the south to the rural neighbourhoods of Buch and Karow in the north. With over 410,000 inhabitants, Pankow is also Berlin's most populous district – and the requirements for a professional move vary accordingly.
Whether you are moving within the district, moving to Pankow from neighbouring Gesundbrunnen or planning a long-distance move: our team organises your home removal or company relocation from the first survey to the last box. We plan for the narrow one-way streets in the Bötzowviertel just as we do for the extensive new-build areas in Karow-Nord and Buchholz-West.
Pankow borders Berlin-Mitte and Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg to the south, Lichtenberg to the east, Reinickendorf to the west and the state of Brandenburg (Barnim district) to the north. For moves, this peripheral location often means longer journeys via the A114 towards the Berlin Ring or via the B96a federal road towards the centre. Our dispatchers plan every route taking into account roadworks, speed limits in residential areas and the opening times of loading zones.
- Berlin's most populous district, with rural and urban neighbourhoods
- Directly adjacent to Mitte, Lichtenberg and Reinickendorf
- Connected via the A114, B96a and the Berlin outer ring
- Moves in period buildings, new builds and commercial properties
As a Berlin moving company from Moabit, our aim is to give you a smooth, transparent and fairly calculated move – whether you are moving from Weißensee, Buch or right from Prenzlauer Berg.
Moving in Pankow's neighbourhoods and local areas
The Pankow district is divided into 13 neighbourhoods that differ greatly in buildings, transport connections and character. For our Pankow moving company this means: every move is tailored individually to the area in question.
- Prenzlauer Berg – according to the district office, Berlin's largest contiguous area of Gründerzeit buildings, narrow streets and scarce parking
- Pankow – the neighbourhood that gives the district its name, with the town hall on Breite Straße and the Bürgerpark
- Niederschönhausen – streets of villas and Schönhausen Palace in the palace park
- Weißensee – the Weißer See lake and the Weißensee Jewish Cemetery, the largest preserved Jewish cemetery in Europe
- Heinersdorf – fieldstone church from around 1300, water tower and the M2 tram terminus
- Blankenburg – the Alt-Blankenburg village green, S-Bahn station with the S2, S26 and S8, and the Blankenburg garden colony
- Karow – village church from around 1250 and Neu-Karow with around 5,000 flats from the 1990s
- Stadtrandsiedlung Malchow – an estate from the late 1930s and the neighbourhood with the fewest inhabitants in the district
- Buch – Berlin's northernmost neighbourhood, with hospitals, Campus Berlin-Buch and prefab blocks from 1970 onwards
- Französisch Buchholz – a village built around a green, shaped by the Huguenots, with tram line 50 and residential buildings from the late 1990s in the west
- Blankenfelde – Berlin's most sparsely populated neighbourhood, with the Botanischer Volkspark on Blankenfelder Chaussee
- Rosenthal – an old village built around a green with a 13th-century village church, connected via the M1 tram
- Wilhelmsruh – the district's smallest neighbourhood by area, by the former Bergmann-Borsig works site
While in Prenzlauer Berg the moving day is mainly shaped by narrow rear courtyards and no-stopping zones, in Karow and Buch the focus is more on long journeys and spacious detached houses. In Weißensee, narrow lakeside streets around the Weißer See often make access with the removal van difficult.
Our removal helpers clarify the particularities of every address in advance: from the cobbled street in Niederschönhausen to the modern underground car park of a new build in Buch. This way we plan no-stopping zones, parking times and journeys realistically in advance and avoid nasty surprises on moving day.
Mastering period-building and new-build moves in Pankow professionally
Like hardly any other Berlin district, Pankow combines two completely different worlds of housing: historic Gründerzeit period buildings and modern new builds in the development areas. As a Berlin moving company from Moabit, we are prepared for both scenarios.
In Prenzlauer Berg and parts of central Pankow, period buildings dominate, with high ceilings, stucco façades and often narrow, winding stairwells without a lift. Careful planning is needed here: bulky furniture has to be carried over several floors, and historic features such as banisters and door frames need special protection. For heavy single items such as grand or upright pianos we offer piano transport with special straps and trained staff.
In Karow, Buch, Blankenburg and Französisch Buchholz, on the other hand, numerous new-build quarters with lifts, underground car parks and wide corridors have been built in recent years. These moves can usually be handled more quickly and predictably, but often require close coordination with the property management regarding lift booking and delivery times.
- Period buildings: narrow stairwells, listed status, often no lift
- New builds: lift use, underground car park, fixed delivery times
- Special transports for pianos, art objects and antiques
- Bundling smaller consignments via our part-load transport
For students, who often live in furnished flatshares in Prenzlauer Berg or Weißensee, we offer an affordable student move, while older people switching to a step-free new-build flat in Buch benefit from our considerate senior move. This is how we master every move in Pankow – whether the charm of a period building or the comfort of a new build is called for.
Applying for a no-stopping zone in Pankow in good time
Anyone moving in Pankow knows the problem: in many neighbourhoods, especially in Prenzlauer Berg and around the Pankow church, parking space is scarce. So that the removal van can stand right outside the door, we recommend setting up a no-stopping zone several days before the moving date.
The responsible body is the road traffic authority of the Pankow district office; according to Service Berlin, processing takes approx. 4 weeks on average. The exact area, the time period and the number of parking spaces required must be stated. The mobile no-stopping signs generally have to be put up visibly 72 hours before the start so that they are legally valid and vehicles already parked there may be towed away.
- Apply at least 4 weeks before the move
- Put up the signs at least 72 hours beforehand
- Costs between €30 and €100 per day, depending on zone and duration
- Particularly important in narrow areas such as Prenzlauer Berg or Weißensee
Especially in narrow period-building streets with parking on both sides, as is typical of many neighbourhoods in southern Pankow, a missing no-stopping zone can throw the whole schedule into disarray. Without a reserved space, the carrying distance gets longer, which costs time and therefore money.
Through our no-stopping zone service we take care of the complete application, coordination with the Pankow road traffic authority and putting up the signs for you. This secures a free loading space right in front of the building entrance – whether in the period-building estate in Niederschönhausen or the new-build area in Karow. That saves nerves, time and ultimately real money.
Moving costs in Pankow: transparent prices at a glance
Moving costs in Pankow depend on several factors: the size of the flat, the floor, the distance, accessibility and any additional services needed. We calculate every move transparently and with no hidden extra costs.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| One-room flat | from €354 |
| Two-room flat | from €594 |
| Three-room flat | from €915 |
| Long-distance move (nationwide) | from €4.15 per kilometre |
| No-stopping zone | €30–100 per day |
These guide prices serve as orientation for a standard move within Berlin, for example from Prenzlauer Berg to Weißensee or from Buch to Niederschönhausen. For long-distance moves, for example to Brandenburg or another federal state, we calculate the route from Pankow to the exact kilometre.
- Free survey on site or by video
- Individual quote based on flat size and floor
- Surcharges for piano transport or bulky goods shown transparently
- No hidden fees for no-stopping zones
Additional services such as a clearance of the old flat, for example when moving out of central Pankow, can easily be integrated into the overall package. Smaller transports too, such as a single piece of furniture from Weißensee to Friedrichshain, can be carried out affordably via our part-load transport.
In the end, what counts for us is not the cheapest hourly rate but a fair overall package: vehicle, staff, materials and liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) are already included in every quote. That way, as a customer in Pankow, you know from the start what costs to expect.
Popular moving routes to and from Pankow
As a Berlin moving company from Moabit, we regularly drive routes between Pankow and the adjacent neighbourhoods. We particularly often handle moves on the following routes:
- From Prenzlauer Berg to Friedrichshain – a short route via Danziger Straße
- From central Pankow to Gesundbrunnen – via Osloer Straße and the ring road
- From Niederschönhausen to Wedding – along Residenzstraße
- From Weißensee via Berliner Allee and Greifswalder Straße towards Kreuzberg
- From Buch or Karow via the A114 towards Moabit or Tiergarten
- From Pankow via the city motorway towards the Hansaviertel
- Occasionally further on to Haselhorst in Spandau
The central route for many of these journeys is the A114, which runs from Prenzlauer Promenade past Französisch Buchholz to the Berlin Ring (A10), along with the B96a as an important north–south link through the district. Within Berlin we also use the inner-city ring road and the B2 federal road as a fast link to the western and southern districts.
As many moves from Pankow lead to adjacent trendy neighbourhoods such as Friedrichshain or Prenzlauer Berg, our drivers know the best times to travel outside rush hour. This way we avoid traffic jams on Prenzlauer Allee or Bornholmer Straße and keep the moving time as short as possible – regardless of whether your new home is in Mitte, Spandau or right in the next neighbourhood.
Our services as a moving company in Pankow
As a full-service Pankow moving company, we offer a broad range of services tailored to the different needs of the district's residents. From a small flatshare room in Prenzlauer Berg to a large villa in Niederschönhausen – we have the right solution for every situation.
- Home removal – complete service from packing to furniture assembly
- Company relocation – for offices and practices, also at weekends or at night
- Part-load transport – affordable transport for smaller quantities and single items
- Clearance – for cellars, lofts or complete flat clearances
- No-stopping zone – application and putting up the signs included
- Piano transport – for grand and upright pianos, with special equipment
- Senior move – organised considerately and with accessibility in mind
- Student move – affordable and flexible, ideal for flatshare rooms
Especially in such a varied district as Pankow, flexibility is crucial: while in Buch, with its campus and hospitals, there are also office and practice moves, in Prenzlauer Berg it is often compact student or single-person moves. In Weißensee and Karow, on the other hand, it is more often families moving from a rented flat into their own home.
All services can be combined flexibly: a company relocation, for example, can be combined with a clearance of the old office premises, a home removal with a no-stopping zone in front of the new flat. This way, as a customer in Pankow, you get all services from a single source, matched to your individual needs and budget.
How your move in Pankow works: step by step
A well-organised move in Pankow follows a clear process. We apply this process to every move in the district so that everything runs smoothly – from the first contact to the last box.
- 1. Free survey: on site or by video, we look at your flat, whether a period building in Prenzlauer Berg or a new build in Karow.
- 2. Individual quote: you receive a transparent cost breakdown based on the number of rooms, floor and additional services.
- 3. Scheduling: we agree the moving date with you and, if needed, apply for a no-stopping zone early.
- 4. Packing: on request we professionally pack crockery, clothing and delicate items.
- 5. Transport: the furniture is transported in a suitable vehicle via the fastest route, for example via the A114 or B96a.
- 6. Assembly: in the new flat we reassemble the furniture and place the boxes as you wish.
- 7. Final cleaning: on request we also carry out a clearance or sweep-clean of the old flat.
This structured process has proven itself both for small moves within one neighbourhood, for example from Wisbyer Straße to Ossietzkystraße in Prenzlauer Berg, and for larger moves across district boundaries. Especially for moves out of hard-to-access period flats without a lift, realistic time planning is crucial to avoid delays.
On moving day itself you have a fixed contact person who coordinates the entire process. This way, as a customer in Pankow, you always keep track while our team does the actual work.
Applying for a no-stopping zone in Pankow: road traffic authority, fee and processing time
In the Pankow district you apply for the no-stopping zone for your move to the district office's road traffic authority. According to service.berlin.de, you can reach it by email at [email protected]. This applies to Prenzlauer Berg as well as Weißensee, Karow or Buch, because the responsible authority is that of the district in which the no-stopping zone is to be set up.
For a no-stopping zone for moves (Haltverbot für Umzüge), Service Berlin states:
- an informal application without special requirements,
- a minimum fee of €21.00, depending on scope and duration,
- an average processing time of approx. 4 weeks,
- the order without traffic signs: you obtain the signs yourself, for example through a road works safety company.
It makes sense to state the street, house number, date, time and the length required in the application. Also note the category of road: several Berlin district offices point out that they look after minor roads and that the central road traffic authority at the Senate Department is generally responsible for main roads. So if your street is a large through road, ask beforehand.
Pankow is both the name of the district and of one of its 13 neighbourhoods. The Prenzlauer Berg neighbourhood and the Pankow neighbourhood both belong to the district but have different types of buildings. Our guide applying for a no-stopping zone explains the steps; you will find our service under no-stopping zone.
Prenzlauer Berg, Karow, Buch and more: moving across Pankow's 13 neighbourhoods
According to the district office, Pankow, with around 410,000 inhabitants, is Berlin's most populous district and comprises 13 neighbourhoods. Its area is just over 103 square kilometres. The types of housing vary accordingly.
According to the district office, Prenzlauer Berg has Berlin's largest contiguous area of Gründerzeit buildings. For a move this means: often a period building, several floors and the question of whether there is a lift. Weißensee and Heinersdorf are also part of our service area.
In the north it becomes more village-like. berlin.de describes Französisch Buchholz as a “rural part of Berlin”, where new residential buildings are being added to allotments and detached houses. Rosenthal was a village and has a manor house, farmsteads and newer detached houses. In Karow, according to the district office, around 5,000 flats were built in the 1990s. Buch is the northernmost neighbourhood, with several hospitals and new development areas.
For your moving day this means: in Prenzlauer Berg we plan the carrying route and, if necessary, a furniture lift; in new-build areas and estates of detached houses we check the access. We record the floor, lift and access in advance so that the vehicle and team suit the address and you know before moving day what to expect.
Is your destination in a neighbouring district? Then you will find information under Mitte and Reinickendorf. More about living in Berlin can be found in our guide to moving to Berlin.
