Two neighbourhoods, one Spree: moving in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

Move stress-free

Unsere Firma Reliable moving solutions for households, offices and transports in Berlin's lively inner-city district.

Whether it is a home removal, an office move or furniture transport – we plan according to the local type of building.
We come from Moabit (Stromstraße 21) and look at both addresses beforehand. After that it is clear whether a no-parking zone is needed, whether packing service, small transport or a part load is the right fit, and what the move costs at a fixed price – including across the Oberbaumbrücke.

Moving in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg: the district on both sides of the Spree

Praktik Transport und Umzüge is your moving company in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg for private and commercial moves in one of Berlin's liveliest districts. Formed in 2001 from the formerly independent districts of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, the area lies centrally on the Spree and the Landwehrkanal and is one of the most popular, but also most demanding, moving areas in the capital. Tight neighbourhoods, dense traffic and a mix of historic buildings and modern architecture place special demands on every move.

Whether you are moving from the Oberbaumbrücke towards Warschauer Straße, live right in the Simon-Dach-Kiez or are relocating your office at Ostbahnhof – our team checks streets, one-way rules and parking at both addresses in advance. We handle both the classic home removal and the company relocation for start-ups and agencies along Media Spree.

Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is divided into the two neighbourhoods of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg, which are separated by the Spree and connected by several bridges. At around 20 square kilometres, it is the smallest Berlin district by area and at the same time the most densely populated – so many moves take place in a confined space. You can find more information on the individual neighbourhoods on our location pages Berlin Friedrichshain and Berlin Kreuzberg.

As a well-coordinated team of furniture packers, drivers and organisers, we plan your move from the first survey to the last box. In doing so, we take into account the particular features of the district: narrow period stairwells, temporary no-parking zones and the high traffic density around Frankfurter Allee or Kottbusser Damm. This makes your move in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg smooth, transparent and predictable.

Neighbourhoods and Kieze in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg: from Boxhagener Kiez to SO36

Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is shaped by distinctive neighbourhoods (Kieze), each with its own character. Anyone moving here rarely moves just into a district, but into a very specific milieu – from student living to family idyll. The most important neighbourhoods and their building characteristics at a glance:

  • Boxhagener Kiez and Simon-Dach-Kiez in Friedrichshain: densely built period-building quarters with many cafés, narrow streets and limited parking
  • Frankfurter Tor and Karl-Marx-Allee: monumental post-war buildings with wider access roads, but high storeys
  • RAW site and the area around Warschauer Straße: a mix of businesses, lofts and residential use
  • SO36 around Schlesisches Tor: dense Kreuzberg perimeter-block development with a lively bar scene
  • Wrangelkiez near the Landwehrkanal and Görlitzer Park: popular with young families and students
  • Graefekiez on the Landwehrkanal and Chamissokiez: quieter, green residential areas with classic period buildings
  • Bergmannkiez around Chamissoplatz and Mehringdamm: well-kept period buildings, many small shops
  • Kottbusser Tor: an urban hub with high-rise buildings from the 1970s

This diversity means different challenges for every move: sometimes a narrow stairwell in a Gründerzeit period building, sometimes a lift in a prefab block (Plattenbau) at Ostkreuz, sometimes a busy main road as the stopping place. We adapt vehicle size, team size and time window individually to each neighbourhood. You can find more information on neighbouring Berlin areas on our pages for Berlin Prenzlauer Berg and Berlin Moabit if your move crosses district boundaries.

Carrying out period-building and new-build moves in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg professionally

Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is a district of architectural contrasts. Large parts consist of Gründerzeit period buildings with high ceilings, stucco-decorated stairwells and often no lift – typical, for example, of the Samariterkiez, the Wrangelkiez or the area around Chamissoplatz. At the same time, modern new builds with lifts, underground car parks and generous floor plans are going up along the Spree, especially in the Media Spree area between Jannowitzbrücke and Elsenbrücke.

For period-building moves we plan extra time for narrow, winding stairwells, protect delicate handrails and walls, and use a furniture lift when needed to move bulky items safely via the balcony. Care is crucial especially with pianos, which stand in many Gründerzeit period flats – our piano transport handles grand and upright pianos professionally with special straps and trained staff.

New-build moves in modern residential complexes on Warschauer Straße or at Osthafen are usually quicker, as lifts and wider access are available – however, it is often necessary to book lift use and delivery times with the property management, which we clarify for you in advance.

Before every move, many customers first clear out cellars, attics or the flats they are leaving. Our house clearance ensures a broom-clean handover, which is particularly important for period flats with strict handover reports. For older residents, who have often lived in the same period building in Kreuzberg or Friedrichshain for a very long time, we also offer a sensitive senior move with special consideration for mobility and personal keepsakes.

Applying for a no-parking zone in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg – how to make parking work on moving day

Anyone moving in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg knows the problem: in neighbourhoods such as the Boxhagener Kiez, around Kottbusser Damm or on Bergmannstraße, parking pressure is enormous. Without a reserved space, loading and unloading a removal van quickly becomes a test of patience or ends in traffic chaos. That is why applying for a no-parking zone (Halteverbotszone) is standard for most moves in the district.

The responsible body is the road traffic authority in the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg Roads and Green Spaces Office; according to the Berlin ServicePortal, an informal application is enough, stating the address, length of the space and time window. We take care of the entire organisation for you: from the application and signage to setting up the signs on time, as specified in the order.

Depending on the street section and duration, a no-parking zone costs between 30 and 100 euros per day. In busy areas such as Karl-Marx-Allee, Frankfurter Allee or around Görlitzer Park, longer spaces are often needed, so the upper end of the price range is more likely. In quieter side streets, for example in the Chamissokiez, the costs are usually lower.

  • Timely application – according to the ServicePortal, processing takes about 4 weeks
  • Signage by our team, no waiting time for you
  • Avoiding fines caused by illegally parked cars on moving day
  • Clear access even on narrow Kreuzberg perimeter-block streets

Our no-parking zone service ensures that your removal van can stand right outside your front door – whether in busy Friedrichshain or in the narrow lanes of Kreuzberg 36. This saves you time, nerves and unnecessary carrying.

Moving costs in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg: transparent prices for your move

The moving costs in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg depend on several factors: the size of the flat, the floor, whether there is a lift, the distance to the new home and any additional services needed, such as no-parking zones or piano transport. After the survey we calculate fair fixed prices based on the actual conditions on site – such as the dense development in the Wrangelkiez or the higher floors on Karl-Marx-Allee.

ServicePrice from
1-room flat€349
2-room flat€584
3-room flat€879
Long-distance move (per km)from €3.95/km
No-parking zone (per day)€30–100

These guide prices apply to standard moves within Berlin, for example from Friedrichshain to Prenzlauer Berg or from Kreuzberg to the Hansaviertel. For period flats without a lift on the 4th or 5th floor, as often found in the Samariterkiez or around Chamissoplatz, we include a floor surcharge, which we show transparently in the quote in advance.

For smaller amounts, such as a single sofa or a few boxes, our part load is often worthwhile: your belongings are combined with other runs and therefore transported more cheaply. For students, who move frequently in the flat-share-rich neighbourhoods around Frankfurter Allee or Boxhagener Platz, we also offer a particularly affordable student move. Contact us for an individual, no-obligation quote – tailored to your specific neighbourhood and living situation in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg.

Popular moving routes to and from Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg

Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg lies centrally within Berlin and is therefore the starting point of numerous moving routes – within Berlin as well as into the surrounding region. Via the junctions of the A100 city ring and the A113 towards BER Airport, our removal vans quickly reach major traffic routes without having to drive through the city centre for long.

The most common moving routes of our customers include:

  • Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg ↔ Prenzlauer Berg: one of the most popular inner-city routes, often via Danziger Straße or Greifswalder Straße
  • Kreuzberg ↔ Moabit and Hansaviertel: via the city motorway or along the Spree towards Tiergarten
  • Friedrichshain ↔ Tiergarten: a short distance via Karl-Marx-Allee and Unter den Linden
  • Kreuzberg ↔ Wedding and Gesundbrunnen: popular with families moving to quieter northern Berlin
  • Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg ↔ Niederschönhausen: a common route for moves to green Pankow
  • Kreuzberg ↔ Haselhorst: a long route right across the city to Spandau, usually via the city motorway

For long-distance moves, for example to Potsdam or other federal states, we use the A115 and the national motorway network from the Berliner Ring. Depending on traffic, BER Airport can be reached from Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg via the A113, which is particularly relevant for company relocations with an international dimension. Whether a short distance within the district or a long-distance move across Germany – we plan every route so that waiting times and parking problems are kept to a minimum.

Our services for your move in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg at a glance

As a moving company in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, we offer a comprehensive range of services tailored to the needs of the district – from the student flat-share in the Samariterkiez to the company headquarters at Media Spree.

  • Home removal: full service for flat moves of any size, including packing, transport and assembly
  • Company relocation: moves for offices and start-ups, especially in demand along Warschauer Straße and at Ostbahnhof
  • Student move: affordable, flexible solutions for the many flat-shares in Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg
  • Senior move: considerate support for older residents of long-occupied period flats
  • Part load: a cost-efficient ride-along option for smaller moving volumes

Each of these services is individually adapted to local conditions in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg. We check access restrictions around Kottbusser Tor and Görlitzer Park in advance and clarify when an additional permit makes sense. Contact us for no-obligation advice – we will put together the right service package for your move from these building blocks.

How your move in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg works – explained step by step

A smooth move in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg requires clear planning, as narrow streets, heavy parking pressure and many period buildings call for special preparation. Our proven process ensures that nothing is left to chance:

  • 1. Enquiry and initial consultation: you describe your living situation, the desired date and your neighbourhood – whether Simon-Dach-Kiez, Bergmannkiez or Media Spree
  • 2. Survey on site or virtually: we check the floor, stairwell width, lift situation and parking options right outside your front door
  • 3. Individual quote: you receive a transparent fixed price that already includes all necessary services such as packing materials or a no-parking zone
  • 4. Applying for the no-parking zone: if needed, we take care of the permit and signage with the district's road traffic authority early on
  • 5. Packing and preparation: on request we pack your belongings professionally and secure delicate furniture and pianos
  • 6. Moving day: our team transports your furniture quickly and safely – even up narrow Kreuzberg stairwells or by furniture lift
  • 7. Assembly and final cleaning: on request we reassemble furniture and hand over the old flat broom-clean, for example after a prior house clearance

This structured process has proven itself both for short moves within Friedrichshain and for larger long-distance moves out of the district. By coordinating the no-parking zone, floor access and time window early, we avoid typical delays that otherwise often occur in densely built neighbourhoods such as around Kottbusser Damm. This way your move in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg stays predictable and stress-free from start to finish.

Applying for a no-parking zone in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg: Yorckstraße and appointments by email

According to service.berlin.de, you apply for a no-parking zone for the removal van at the road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde) of the district in which it is to be set up. In Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg it is part of the Roads and Green Spaces Office (Straßen- und Grünflächenamt), Yorckstraße 4-11, 10965 Berlin. Telephone (030) 90298-8024, email [email protected].

The special use of public roads section accepts enquiries on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays only by appointment via email. An informal application is required; the page does not mention any further requirements. The fee is at least 21.00 euros, depending on scope and duration. According to service.berlin.de, the average processing time is about four weeks.

The office issues an order, but no traffic signs. According to the Berlin administration, anyone without signs can commission a company that secures construction sites, which is usually permitted to put them up. So plan for two steps: first the order, then the signage.

In a densely built district like this one, it pays to measure the length of the required no-parking zone precisely and agree it with us in advance. Note down the house numbers, vehicle length and times, and the informal application is quickly prepared. General information is available on our no-parking zone page. Neighbourhood notes can be found under Moving in Friedrichshain and Moving in Kreuzberg.

Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg: two neighbourhoods, registration and bulky waste

According to the district office, the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district was created by the merger in 2001. It consists of the two neighbourhoods of Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg. The district office also lists seven planning areas (social areas), including Südliche Friedrichstadt, Tempelhofer Vorstadt, Nördliche Luisenstadt, Südliche Luisenstadt and Karl-Marx-Allee-Nord. Tell us the exact neighbourhood, street and floor when you enquire, and we will plan the approach and carrying routes.

According to service.berlin.de, you must register within 14 days of moving in. Registration is free of charge. You need a valid ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); a tenancy agreement does not replace it. For registration in person, book an appointment at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt) via service.berlin.de. Online registration is possible for Germans and EU citizens aged 18 and over with BundID and the online ID function.

Decluttering also needs planning. According to bsr.de, bulky waste collection costs a flat rate of 50 euros for up to 5 m³ at the saver rate (collection from the 16th working day) and 100 euros for up to 5 m³ at the standard rate (6 to 15 working days). The bulky waste must be ready in the flat or on the property. From the 7th floor upwards, collection only takes place if there is a working lift, and the BSR lorry needs a stopping space of at least 12 metres, no more than 100 metres from the loading point.

Always one step ahead.
