A part load is worthwhile when you do not need a whole lorry: the wardrobe from the old town, the bed for the flat in Siemensstadt, a few boxes going to Charlottenburg. Questions about moving in Spandau: parking restrictions, costs, neighbourhoods

Key answers for your move in Berlin Spandau

Answers about parking restrictions on Heerstraße and in the old town, prices, new builds in the Wasserstadt and family homes in Kladow and Gatow – with sources where authorities are concerned.

Among other places, we carry out moves in Spandau's old town, Haselhorst, Siemensstadt, Staaken, Falkenhagener Feld, Wilhelmstadt, Hakenfelde, Kladow and Gatow.

Moving in Spandau: old town, Havel banks, estates and villa streets

At around 92 km², Spandau is Berlin's fourth-largest district and lies mostly on the western bank of the Havel, near the point where the Spree flows into the Havel. For a move in Spandau, this means very different starting points: the old town with the Kolk, St Nicholas' Church (Nikolaikirche) and pedestrian zone, the Citadel, which today belongs to the neighbourhood of Haselhorst, the Wasserstadt Oberhavel on both banks of the Havel and the villa streets in the south. Praktik Transport und Umzüge is based on Stromstraße in Moabit; from there we drive into the district via Siemensdamm and Nonnendammallee or via Heerstraße, and prepare private and business moves with the same care.

Our team handles both the classic private move into a new flat and the business move for companies along Siemensdamm or on the commercial sites of Haselhorst and Siemensstadt. Spandau is not a uniform district: cobblestones in the old town, large estates such as Heerstraße Nord in Staaken and family homes in Kladow and Gatow each require a different vehicle, a different team size and often a different parking space. That is why we only prepare the quote after a personal consultation and a usually free survey, or on the basis of your photos.

Whether you are moving from the old town to a new-build quarter on the Havel, switching from Falkenhagener Feld to Wilhelmstadt or relocating your office from Berlin-Mitte to Spandau – we plan the route, vehicle size and staff in advance. The neighbourhood of Berlin Haselhorst, with its Reichsforschungssiedlung from the 1930s, is also part of our area of operation. What you can expect from us: transparent communication, punctual appointments and a plan that is in place before the first box – right through to the last box in your new home in Spandau.

Neighbourhoods in Spandau: moving from the old town to Kladow

The district of Spandau is divided into several very different neighbourhoods, each bringing its own challenges for a move. We come from Moabit and therefore look at every Spandau address beforehand: we clarify the parking situation, street width and type of building before the moving day, not on it.

  • Spandau old town – historic core with narrow lanes around Breite Straße and Reformationsplatz, often period buildings with narrow stairwells
  • Haselhorst – the Reichsforschungssiedlung from 1930 to 1935, the Citadel and the eastern part of the Wasserstadt Oberhavel, slab blocks often without lifts
  • Siemensstadt – Siemens factory buildings and the Siemensstadt large housing estate (Ringsiedlung), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008
  • Staaken – Gartenstadt Staaken (1914–1917), the village core of Alt-Staaken and the Heerstraße Nord large estate with around 8,000 flats
  • Falkenhagener Feld – the most densely populated neighbourhood, a large estate from 1962 on Falkenseer Chaussee, so lift planning is correspondingly important
  • Wilhelmstadt – tenement buildings north of Heerstraße, family homes south of it, the Stößensee and Pichelsdorf
  • Hakenfelde – almost two thirds Spandau Forest, plus the western part of the Wasserstadt and the Johannesstift
  • Kladow and Gatow – rural neighbourhoods with family homes, often longer drives and larger moving volumes

For us, this range of housing types means: no two moves in Spandau are alike. While in the old town a parking restriction zone is often needed just to get to the property at all, moves to Kladow or Gatow usually require larger vehicles for longer distances within the district. The neighbouring area of Berlin Haselhorst also lies directly on our route from Moabit via Nonnendammallee. A thorough check in advance helps to realistically assess driving times and avoid delays on the moving day.

Period building or new build in Spandau: what matters when moving

Spandau combines historic buildings and modern housing projects in a small space. In Spandau's old town, around Reformationsplatz and Carl-Schurz-Straße, there are numerous late-19th-century period buildings with high ceilings, narrow stairwells and often no lift. For a period-building move in Spandau we therefore always plan in more time and staff, especially when bulky furniture or piano transport across several floors is involved. Tight spiral staircases and low door frames also require special packing material to protect walls and furniture alike.

The situation is quite different in newer residential areas: the Wasserstadt Spandau on the Havel, modern building projects in Haselhorst and new builds in Staaken generally offer wide stairwells, working lifts and underground car parks. Here the move can usually be done more quickly and with less effort, but precise agreements on lift sizes and delivery times are still important, as many new builds have strict house rules for moves.

For students in particular, who often move into compact period flats near Wilhelmstadt or into halls of residence, our students' move has proven its worth: quick, straightforward and fairly priced. For older residents who want to move from a family home in Kladow or Gatow into a step-free new-build flat, we offer a sensitive seniors' move with particular attention to safety and calm throughout the whole process. This way we make sure that both the charm of period buildings and the comfort of modern new builds in Spandau are taken into account in the best possible way during the move.

Parking restriction zones in Spandau: parking safely on moving day

Anyone moving in Spandau knows the problem: especially in Spandau's old town, along Klosterstraße or around the Spandauer Markt, parking spaces are rare and the streets are often narrow. So that the moving van can stand right outside the front door and long carrying distances are avoided, we set up an official parking restriction zone in Spandau for you. We take care of the application to the responsible authority, put up the signs in good time and make sure that there is enough space for the lorry and manoeuvring on the moving day.

Depending on the zone, duration and effort, the cost of a parking restriction zone is between €30 and €100 per day. Especially in busy areas such as Nonnendammallee, Falkenseer Platz or Pichelsdorfer Straße, we recommend applying early, as Service Berlin states a processing time of around four weeks and the signs must be up in good time before the date. In quieter residential areas such as Hakenfelde or Wilhelmstadt, a smaller zone is often enough, while in the densely built old town larger closures may be necessary.

Our parking restriction zone service covers the complete organisation: from registration and signs to checks on site. This way you avoid fines for wrongly parked vehicles, unnecessary waiting times and a stressful search for parking on the moving day. Especially for moves into or out of multi-storey residential buildings in Spandau, a secured loading zone pays off noticeably – the move is quicker, cheaper and more relaxed for everyone involved. Contact us early so that we can allow enough lead time for the approval.

Moving costs in Spandau: transparent prices at a glance

The moving costs in Spandau depend on several factors: size of the flat, floor, distance, accessibility and the extra services needed, such as a parking restriction zone or clearance. So that you have a realistic idea even before you enquire, we have summarised our guide prices in the following table.

ServicePrice from
Move of a one-room flat€339
Move of a two-room flat€599
Move of a three-room flat€889
Long-distance move (per kilometre)from €3.85/km
Parking restriction zone (per day)€30–100

Within Spandau, for example for a move from the old town to Staaken or from Haselhorst to Kladow, most moves are in the mid-price range, as distances within the district remain manageable. It is different for long-distance moves, for example if you are moving from Spandau to another federal state – here the price is calculated mainly on the kilometres driven.

Additional cost factors can be:

  • A floor without a lift, especially in period buildings in Spandau's old town
  • Bulky furniture or piano transport
  • Clearance needed before the actual move
  • An additional part load for smaller transport volumes

On request, after a short survey or on the basis of your information, we prepare a binding fixed-price quote so that you do not experience any unpleasant surprises when moving in Spandau.

Popular moving routes to and from Spandau

Many of our customers do not move within Spandau, but between Spandau and other Berlin districts. Because our runs start in Moabit, we plan the connections between Spandau and the city centre particularly carefully.

A common route leads via Heerstraße and Kaiserdamm towards Charlottenburg and on towards Berlin-Mitte. Customers moving from Spandau to the district of Mitte often end up in areas such as Berlin Moabit, Berlin Tiergarten or Berlin Hansaviertel. This route is easy to drive via Otto-Suhr-Allee and Spreeweg and usually takes just under half an hour, depending on traffic.

Moves northwards are also in demand, for example to Berlin Wedding or Berlin Gesundbrunnen, which are easy to reach via Seestraße and Osloer Straße. Anyone moving even further north, for example to Berlin Niederschönhausen or Berlin Prenzlauer Berg, benefits from the good connections via the A100 and the Berlin ring road.

Moves eastwards, for example to customers in Berlin Kreuzberg or Berlin Friedrichshain, are also part of our everyday work. These routes usually run via the A100 city motorway and take between 30 and 50 minutes depending on traffic.

For all these routes, in addition to the classic complete move, we also offer a part load when only a few pieces of furniture need to be transported. This saves customers real money when a whole lorry is not needed for the volume. Planning these cross-district routes in advance ensures realistic scheduling and reliable arrival times, whether your new home is in the city centre or in one of the northern districts.

  • Part load – affordable transport of smaller moving volumes without a lorry of your own
  • Clearance – house clearances and cellar clear-outs, particularly in demand in the period buildings of Spandau's old town

  • Piano transport – special transport for upright and grand pianos with trained staff

Our staff are prepared for Spandau's building features – from narrow stairwells in the old town to extensive plots in Gatow. This way you receive all services for your move in Spandau from a single source, coordinated by a fixed contact person who accompanies you through the entire process.

How your move with Praktik Transport und Umzüge in Spandau works

A well-organised process is the basis for a stress-free move in Spandau. That is why we follow a clear, consistent procedure for every job, which adapts to the particular conditions in the district.

1. First contact and advice: you tell us about your plans – whether a move within Spandau's old town, from Staaken to Wilhelmstadt or a long-distance move out of the district. We clarify initial details such as the size of the flat, floor and preferred date.

2. Survey or remote assessment: for larger moves we recommend a free on-site survey, for example in Kladow or Gatow, to realistically assess access routes and special features such as narrow stairs. For smaller moves, a detailed description by phone or photo is often enough.

3. Individual quote: you receive a transparent fixed-price quote that takes into account all the services you want, such as clearance or a parking restriction zone.

4. Packing and preparation: on request we take care of properly packing delicate items, organise boxes and arrange any parking restriction zones needed in the narrow streets of the old town in good time.

5. Moving day: our trained team loads furniture and boxes carefully, secures everything properly in the vehicle and transports your belongings reliably to the new address – whether within Spandau or to another Berlin district.

6. Assembly and follow-up: at the destination we reassemble furniture on request, place boxes sorted by room and remain available for questions after the move. This way customers in Spandau experience a move that is thought through and professionally supported from the first enquiry to the very last task.

Parking restrictions in Spandau: road traffic authority, Heerstraße and lead time

In Spandau, the road traffic authority is part of the Roads and Green Spaces Office. According to the district office, it is located at Otternbuchtstraße 35, 13599 Berlin (postal address: 13578 Berlin). It can be reached by phone on +49 30 90279 3838 (Mon to Fri, 9 am to 2 pm) and by email at [email protected]. Office hours are Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 am to 12 noon or by telephone appointment.

According to its website, the authority orders temporary parking restrictions for moves and deliveries. It only lists online forms for building sites and certain uses of public road space, not for parking restrictions for moves. Service Berlin states the following for the procedure:

  • an informal application with no special requirements,
  • a minimum fee of €21.00, depending on scope and duration,
  • an average processing time of about 4 weeks,
  • no traffic signs from the authority: you obtain the signs yourself.

Note the road category. The district office counts Heerstraße, Seegefelder Straße, Altstädter Ring and Gatower Straße as part of the higher-level road network. Responsibility for these lies not with the district office but with the Senate Department. If you live on one of these streets, clarify this before applying.

In the application, state the street, house number, date, time and the length required, and plan for the signs to be put up in good time before the moving day.

Our guide Applying for a parking restriction zone shows the process; you will find our service under parking restriction zone.

Old town, Kladow, Siemensstadt: moving in Spandau's neighbourhoods

According to berlin.de, Spandau consists of Spandau (with the old town), Staaken, Haselhorst, Siemensstadt, Gatow, Kladow, Falkenhagener Feld, Hakenfelde and Wilhelmstadt. Around 25 per cent of its area is forest and water.

According to berlin.de, the old town with the Kolk is older than Berlin itself. It has cobblestones, historic buildings and Berlin's largest pedestrian zone. This is a good reason to clarify in advance where the removal van can stop and whether rules apply to the pedestrian zone; ask the road traffic authority about times for delivery traffic.

According to berlin.de, Kladow and Gatow in the south-west consist of villas and family homes with plenty of greenery. Siemensstadt combines Berlin tenement buildings with estates in the “New Building” (Neues Bauen) style. Staaken mixes older houses, new family homes and large estates, Falkenhagener Feld is shaped by large housing estates, and Wilhelmstadt by older estates and waterside plots. Haselhorst and Hakenfelde are also part of our area of operation.

This shapes your move: for large estates we check the lift and the distance from the parking spot; for villas and family homes, the access, stairs and, if necessary, a furniture lift. We look at every address in advance.

According to service.berlin.de, you register within 14 days of moving in. More on this in the article Registering after a move: deadlines. Neighbouring districts: Reinickendorf and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf.

Always one step ahead.
