Key answers for your move in Berlin Gatow
We travel to Gatow from Moabit and can often offer a survey or moving date at short notice. For reliable planning, however, we recommend arranging the date as early as possible.
Gatow: a village in the city between the Havel and open fields
The Spandau district office calls Gatow a "village in the city": a good 3,500 people live here on around 10 km² – the lowest population density of all Spandau neighbourhoods. Detached houses, large plots and the Havel to the east shape the picture. Anyone moving out of the old village centre around Alt-Gatow, from a house on the banks of the Havel or from a plot near the former sewage fields (Rieselfelder) has different requirements from a tenant inside the inner-city ring. As a removal company for Berlin-Gatow, this is exactly what we prepare for: gardens and garages, partly unpaved access roads and narrow lanes in the centre near the village church, whose fieldstone core dates from the early 14th century and is considered the oldest surviving building in Gatow.
Gatow lies on the western edge of Berlin, on the border with Potsdam (Groß Glienicke) and Dallgow-Döberitz; Wilhelmstadt borders it to the north and Kladow to the south. Buses connect Gatow with Spandau station, from where the S-Bahn, regional trains and the U7 continue. For a move this means a longer approach for the removal van – we come from Moabit – but often better parking directly outside the front door than in densely built-up neighbourhoods. At Praktik Transport und Umzüge, known under the brand Beste Umzug, we factor this mix of village and city in from the very beginning.
Whether you are moving within Gatow, swapping a detached house by the water for a smaller flat or moving into the neighbourhood for the first time: we take care of the entire organisation, from the first survey to the last box. In advance we clarify the bends in the residential streets as well as the space available on the through road Alt-Gatow–Kladower Damm. This way we avoid nasty surprises on moving day and make sure your home move runs smoothly, on schedule and without stress – whether it is just a few streets or a long distance.
Moving services for Gatow: from boxes to pianos
Our range of services for Gatow is as varied as the neighbourhood itself. Many households here live in detached houses with a cellar, attic and garden – so the household contents are often extensive. For a classic home move we therefore plan enough time and staff, including professional packing of glass, crockery and delicate furniture. We also handle smaller moves, for example from a granny flat or a semi-detached house, reliably and transparently.
As Gatow is also home to smaller trade businesses, practices and offices, we also carry out company relocations – from IT cabling to dismantling furniture, usually organised outside regular business hours so that operations hardly come to a standstill. If only part of your household needs to be transported, for example because you commute between a second home in Gatow and another Berlin neighbourhood, our part-load transport is the cost-effective solution, as your goods are carried together with other jobs.
Before the move, many households in Gatow first clear out the cellar, garage or attic – this is where our clearance service steps in, professionally, in an environmentally conscious way and with a transparent breakdown of costs. If you own an upright or grand piano, as is often found in the more spacious living rooms of Gatow's villas, our trained carriers handle the piano transport with special equipment and liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB). After the move we reassemble wardrobes, beds and kitchens on request – our furniture assembly saves you time and nerves. And for older residents, who in Gatow have often lived in their house for many years, we offer a particularly gentle senior move with all-round support.
Parking restriction zone and parking when moving in Gatow
The parking situation in Gatow differs considerably from that in densely built-up inner-city areas. In many streets of detached houses away from the through road Alt-Gatow–Kladower Damm, there are often private driveways, garages or enough space on the street. This makes loading and unloading the removal van much easier. It is a different story in the historic village centre around the church and on the through road itself: here it can get quite tight on busy days, especially when several vehicles are loading and unloading at the same time or residents park their vehicles for longer periods.
So that the removal van can stand exactly outside your door on moving day and long carrying distances are avoided, we apply for a parking restriction zone for you in good time. The order is issued by the road traffic authority in the Spandau Roads and Green Spaces Office, with lead times that we calculate precisely in advance. Especially in Gatow's quieter but sometimes narrow streets, this prevents neighbours or visitors from accidentally parking in the reserved area.
In addition, we check the access options for larger vehicles in advance – some streets among the waterside plots near the Havel are narrow or end in cul-de-sacs, which makes a forward-looking choice of vehicle necessary. We also take construction areas into account in our planning, for example during road works. Our aim is that you do not have to worry about anything on moving day: we organise the parking restriction zone, arrange the signage in good time before the date and, if necessary, coordinate with your immediate neighbours so that your move in Gatow runs smoothly and without unnecessary waiting.
Moving costs in Gatow: transparent fixed prices instead of nasty surprises
The moving costs in Gatow depend on several factors: the size of the household, the distance to the new home, the access situation and any additional services such as furniture assembly, piano transport or clearance. As many properties in Gatow are generously laid out – often with a cellar, garden and garage – the moving volume can be higher than for a comparable city flat. On the other hand, the usually good parking options often save time and therefore costs compared with moves in tighter neighbourhoods.
So that you know what to expect from the start, we draw up a binding fixed-price quote after a free survey – by video too, if you like. It already includes staff, vehicle, packing material and the agreed additional services, so there are no hidden extra charges at the end. You will find a detailed overview of price ranges, sample calculations and influencing factors on our page about moving costs in Berlin.
In our calculation we take typical conditions in Gatow into account: for example the distance from the removal van to the front door on large plots, the effort involved in transporting garden furniture or equipment from sheds and garages, and possible extra trips if cellar rooms or separate outbuildings are moving too. Anyone who wants to declutter before the move anyway often combines clearance and the move in one appointment, which saves additional trips and therefore costs. Business customers, such as smaller offices or practices in Gatow, also benefit from our transparent fixed-price model for the company relocation, including clearly calculable time slots outside core working hours.
Old buildings, new builds and furniture lifts: building features in Gatow
In terms of architectural history, Gatow is a neighbourhood of contrasts. The old village centre around Gatow village church and Alt-Gatow bears witness to its originally rural character with individual historic buildings, while in the 20th century large areas of detached single-family houses, semi-detached houses and villa plots grew up along the banks of the Havel and towards Groß Glienicke. Classic Berlin period apartment buildings, as known from the city centre, are rather the exception in Gatow – instead, two- to three-storey residential houses with their own plot dominate.
This type of housing brings its own challenges for moves: instead of a stairwell with tight bends, several floors often have to be negotiated inside the house itself, often including spiral staircases, low cellar stairs or narrow attic hatches. In newer apartment buildings, of which there are a few in Gatow, we more often find a lift, which makes the transport considerably easier. Where there is no lift or pieces of furniture are too big for the stairwell and door frames, we use a furniture lift that moves boxes and furniture safely and quickly via the balcony or window – gentle on walls, banisters and backs.
After the transport we also take care of professional reassembly on request: our furniture assembly ensures that wardrobes, beds and shelving systems in your new home in Gatow are quickly ready for use again. Especially in larger detached houses with custom-made fitted kitchens or built-in wardrobes, this additional service pays off, as our team documents and labels the furniture during dismantling. This prevents mix-ups and saves you valuable time at your new home.
Popular moving routes from Gatow: from Spandau to the rest of Germany
Many moves from Gatow go to neighbouring areas within the borough of Spandau. We particularly often handle moves to neighbouring Kladow, which is also characterised by villas and its proximity to the Havel, and to Staaken with its established housing estates. Moves towards Falkenhagener Feld, to the more densely built-up areas of Haselhorst and Siemensstadt, and to the residential area of Hakenfelde are also among our regular jobs. Each of these neighbourhoods has a different building structure, and we adapt our approach to each one.
In addition, many families from Gatow move beyond the Berlin city limits for work, for example towards Potsdam, Falkensee or more distant destinations such as Hamburg, Munich or the Rhine-Main area. For such routes we offer reliable long-distance moves in which we take care of the entire logistics: from loading in Gatow and interim storage to punctual delivery at your new home. On longer routes in particular, part-load transport is often worthwhile if not the entire household has to be moved, but only single pieces of furniture or boxes – this noticeably reduces costs.
Via federal road B2, which runs through north-western Gatow towards Potsdam, and via Heerstraße heading west, removal vans from Gatow reach the long-distance routes without first crossing the city centre. For moves within Spandau we plan the routes via Gatower Straße, Wilhelmstraße and Heerstraße with realistic travel times; our team starts in Moabit, and the longer approach to the south of the borough is already included in the quote.
How your move in Gatow works: from enquiry to the last box
A successful move begins long before the actual moving day. In the first step we get in touch with you to establish the scope of your move in Gatow: how large is the household, are there special items such as a piano, what is the access to your property like, is a parking restriction zone needed? If necessary, we survey your home on site or by video call in order to assess all details realistically – from the cellar stairs to the garden access.
Based on this information, we draw up a detailed, non-binding fixed-price quote covering all agreed services, such as a home move, furniture assembly or piano transport. As soon as you confirm the date, we take care of all organisational points in good time: applying for the parking restriction zone, providing moving boxes and packing material, and the exact scheduling of the moving day itself.
On moving day our trained team arrives punctually, protects floors, stairwells and door frames against damage and begins the systematic dismantling and reassembly of your furniture. Larger items are moved by furniture lift if necessary, and delicate objects are specially padded. After the transport, everything is reassembled at your new home, including connecting lamps, kitchen appliances or washing machines, if booked. Finally, we check together with you that everything has arrived complete and undamaged. On request we also take care of the proper disposal of packing material or furniture you no longer need through our clearance service. That way, at the end of the day you have a tidy new home without having to worry about the details.
Day-trip tips for new Gatow residents: Havel, airfield and village centre
Anyone moving to Gatow will find a neighbourhood that, despite belonging to Berlin, feels almost like a village of its own. A tip for new residents is the Bundeswehr Museum of Military History on the former Gatow airfield (the museum grounds now belong to Kladow) – an exciting outing for the whole family and a good first point of orientation in the area. The extensive banks of the Havel, with their water sports and footpaths, also invite you to unwind in the evening after a tiring moving day.
For families with children, the Gatow fields with the former sewage fields offer plenty of space for walks, while the historic village centre around the church gives an impression of the neighbourhood's original character. If you like living surrounded by greenery but still value good connections to central Berlin, Gatow offers a rare combination: quiet, often tree-lined streets, generous plots and at the same time a bus connection to Spandau station with links to the S-Bahn, regional trains and the U7.
Our tip for moving day itself: when moving into or out of Gatow, allow enough buffer time for the approach, as the access roads are at times busier with day-trip traffic on fine weekends. If you plan with us early, you benefit from smooth logistics tailored to the particular features of this green Havel neighbourhood. Whether a home move, a company relocation or a complete long-distance move to another federal state – as a removal company for Berlin-Gatow based in Moabit, we support you reliably, transparently and with the necessary understanding of the special character of this neighbourhood.
Parking restriction for your move in Gatow: applying to the Spandau district office
The road traffic authority of the borough of Spandau is responsible for Gatow. According to service.berlin.de, it is based in the Roads and Green Spaces Office (Straßen- und Grünflächenamt), Otternbuchtstraße 35, 13599 Berlin. You can reach the office by telephone on (030) 90279-2721 and by email at [email protected]. According to the portal, opening hours are Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 am to 12 noon, and outside these times by telephone appointment.
- An informal application is sufficient; the portal names no further requirements.
- The minimum fee is 21.00 euros, depending on scope and duration.
- The average processing time is approx. 4 weeks.
- There is an order, but no traffic signs; these are put up by a suitable specialist firm.
In the application, state the street, house number, date and time, and remember the space outside both the old and the new flat, as the portal stresses. Ask the office whether moving out and moving in can be covered by one application or have to be applied for separately, and work out the length of space you need based on your vehicle. If you would rather hand this task over to someone else, you will find our service under parking restriction zone. According to the portal, the legal basis is the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO). With a processing time of four weeks, you should submit the application at least a month before moving day. The page Moving in Spandau gives an overview of the borough.
Gatow between the Havel and open fields: location, village centre and everyday life
The Spandau district office describes Gatow as a "village in the city". The neighbourhood was founded around 1258 and lies in the south of Berlin between the Havel to the east and the Gatow fields. Kladow borders it to the south and Wilhelmstadt to the north, while the city boundary with Potsdam and Dallgow runs to the west. Footpaths run along the western bank of the Havel, and the Große and Kleine Badewiese bathing meadows and the former sewage fields are also mentioned. Among the sights, the district office lists Gatow village church, the post windmill and the Air Force Museum.
For your move, the village character mainly means: plan access and carrying routes in advance, because here you are moving between gardens, fields and waterside locations rather than in a dense urban quarter. You will find moves to the neighbouring areas on the pages for Kladow and Wilhelmstadt. For longer distances, read more about our long-distance moves.
After moving into Gatow, according to service.berlin.de you register at a Berlin citizens' office within 14 days, free of charge and with the landlord confirmation. According to the BSR, you can take up to three cubic metres of old furniture to the recycling centre free of charge; for a collection by the BSR, check the date and costs directly with them.
