Large
estates, village centres, parking bans: moving topics in the district

Key moving topics for Marzahn-Hellersdorf
A move in Marzahn-Hellersdorf brings specific challenges, from the building stock to the transport links. You should keep these topics in mind when planning.

Flats in large housing estates

Many flats in Marzahn and Hellersdorf are in multi-storey prefab buildings – a furniture lift and careful carrying are often decisive here.

Village centres with historic buildings

In Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf, narrow access roads and older buildings call for a special sure touch during transport.

Parking space & parking restriction zones

In densely built residential streets, a parking restriction zone applied for in good time is often essential for a smooth moving day.

Questions about moving in Marzahn-Hellersdorf

Your questions about moving in Berlin Marzahn-Hellersdorf

Here you will find concise answers on moving, transport and organisation in Berlin Marzahn-Hellersdorf for better, more predictable and less stressful preparation.

For moves in Marzahn's typical multi-storey prefab buildings, we check the lift situation and stairwell width in advance. If needed, we organise a furniture lift so that bulky items can be moved safely and without damage, even on upper floors.

Marzahn-Hellersdorf at a glance: a district on the eastern edge of the city

Marzahn-Hellersdorf lies in the east of Berlin on the border with Brandenburg. The district was formed in 2001 from the former districts of Marzahn and Hellersdorf and covers around 62 square kilometres. It unites two very different worlds: the large housing estates of the 1970s and 1980s in Marzahn and Hellersdorf and the detached-house areas of Biesdorf, Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf. In between lie green corridors such as the Wuhletal and the Gardens of the World (Gärten der Welt) at Kienberg.

We are Praktik Transport und Umzüge and come from Stromstraße in Moabit. As a moving company for Marzahn-Hellersdorf, we plan every job in advance – from a flat move to relocating an office. A typical example is the move from a prefab flat in Marzahn-Nord to a house in Mahlsdorf, or moving an office from Helle Mitte to the city centre.

For flat moves in the typical eleven-storey residential blocks, we bring suitable equipment; for detached houses, vehicles that also fit into narrow residential streets. Our services include household moves, business relocations and part loads for smaller transports. Anyone moving east or into the Brandenburg countryside around Berlin can quickly reach the B1/B5 from here.

The journey from Moabit usually runs via Landsberger Allee or the B1/B5. We plan the travel time according to traffic and time of day; we deliberately do not give a flat number of minutes. What really determines the process is what we see during the survey.

Neighbourhoods & local areas in Marzahn-Hellersdorf: moving to every corner of the district

Marzahn-Hellersdorf consists of five neighbourhoods: Marzahn, Biesdorf, Kaulsdorf, Mahlsdorf and Hellersdorf. Each places its own demands on a move – that is why we plan according to neighbourhood and type of building.

  • Marzahn: the most populous neighbourhood, built from 1977 as the largest housing estate in the GDR, mostly eleven storeys; in the middle lies the listed village centre of Alt-Marzahn with its post mill.
  • Hellersdorf: large estate from 1985, mostly five- to six-storey prefab buildings, with the Helle Mitte centre and the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences, served by the U5.
  • Biesdorf: Biesdorf Palace, the village green and the Biesdorf-Süd villa colony; north of the S-Bahn there are also apartment blocks on Buckower Ring.
  • Kaulsdorf: a green village (Angerdorf) with a village church dating from around 1250, detached houses and the Kaulsdorf lakes; the “Kaulsdorf-Nord” prefab area, on the other hand, belongs to Hellersdorf.
  • Mahlsdorf: estate houses with gardens, the Lichtenberger Gartenheim garden city north of the S-Bahn station and the Gutshaus Mahlsdorf manor house on Hultschiner Damm.

In the tower blocks we plan with lifts, a furniture lift and a loading zone in front of the entrance; in Mahlsdorf or Kaulsdorf more with driveways, garden furniture and cellars. Moves within the district, for example from Hellersdorf to Biesdorf or from Marzahn-Mitte to Kaulsdorf, are also part of our work.

The U5, the S5 and S7 S-Bahn lines and several tram lines serve the district; this is practical for helpers travelling in. Whether a new-build flat on the Marzahner Promenade or a renovated house in Mahlsdorf-Süd: we tailor the process to the address. We also handle student moves into smaller flats near the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences in Hellersdorf.

Period buildings, new builds and prefab blocks: moving challenges in Marzahn-Hellersdorf

Hardly any Berlin district combines such different building types as Marzahn-Hellersdorf. The large estates of the 1970s and 1980s with their characteristic prefab buildings dominate large parts of Marzahn and Hellersdorf, while historic village centres and detached-house estates prevail in Kaulsdorf, Mahlsdorf and Biesdorf.

In the prefab blocks, often with five to eleven storeys, the stairwells are frequently narrow and the lifts are not designed for goods such as sofas or wardrobes. Here we deliberately rely on alternatives to the passenger lift or organise a furniture lift if needed, to cover the floors efficiently and without damaging banisters. Tight bends in the tower block estates along the Marzahner Promenade also require careful carrying and suitable packing materials.

In the older buildings and village centres of Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf, by contrast, the focus is often on detached houses with gardens, narrow driveways or historic wooden staircases. Here what is needed is the careful transport of bulky garden furniture, cellar contents or old items from the loft – often combined with a clearance before the actual move.

New-build projects, for example in Hellersdorf-Süd or the new Stadtgut Hellersdorf quarter, in turn bring modern lifts and wider stairwells, which makes moving furniture easier, but often require stricter property management rules on time windows and consideration for neighbours.

  • Prefab block: narrow stairwells, furniture lift often necessary
  • Village-centre old building: historic fabric, narrow access roads
  • New build: modern lifts, clear house rules

We adapt our approach individually to each building situation – from vehicle size to staffing – so that your move in Marzahn-Hellersdorf runs smoothly, whether on the tenth floor of a prefab block or in a terraced house with a garden.

Having a parking restriction zone set up in Marzahn-Hellersdorf

Especially in the densely built residential areas along the Marzahner Promenade, Havemannstraße or around Alice-Salomon-Platz in Hellersdorf, there is often not enough parking space for the removal van on moving day. So that loading and unloading work without long carrying distances and searching for parking, we take care of applying in good time for a parking restriction zone at the road traffic authority of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district office.

In Marzahn-Hellersdorf, this often concerns the following areas:

  • Residential streets with high parking pressure in Marzahn-Mitte and Hellersdorf-Nord
  • Narrow entrances in the village centres of Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf
  • Busy roads such as Allee der Kosmonauten or Landsberger Allee
  • New-build areas with limited parking spaces, for example in Hellersdorf-Süd

We handle the entire organisation: from the application and signage to putting the signs up in good time – with the lead time required by the road traffic authority's order. This way we secure a reserved space for you directly outside your front door and avoid conflicts with other residents or fines for illegal parking.

The cost of a parking restriction zone is between €30 and €100 per day, depending on the stretch of road, duration and effort. For long street frontages in large estates or moves over several days with interim storage, we calculate the costs transparently in advance. You will find more details on the process, deadlines and prices on our page about the parking restriction zone.

Especially for moves into or out of the narrow streets of the village centres, we recommend commissioning the parking restriction zone early, as according to the ServicePortal the road traffic authority gives a processing time of around four weeks. This saves you unnecessary stress on moving day and long distances for your moving team.

Moving costs in Marzahn-Hellersdorf: transparent prices for every move

The cost of a move in Marzahn-Hellersdorf depends on several factors: size of the flat, floor, distance, accessibility and any additional services required, such as packing or furniture assembly. As a moving company in Marzahn-Hellersdorf, we always calculate transparently and without hidden costs.

ServicePrice from
Move of a one-room flat€365
Move of a two-room flat€605
Move of a three-room flat€884
Long-distance move (per km)from €3.80/km
Parking restriction zone (per day)€30–100

These guide figures apply to standard moves within Berlin, for example from Marzahn to Hellersdorf or from Biesdorf to other parts of the district. For moves in prefab blocks with many floors and no usable lift, the effort may increase, as it may with very bulky furniture or special requests such as piano transport.

Distance also plays a role: a move within Mahlsdorf differs considerably in price from a long-distance move towards Brandenburg via the nearby A10, for example to Strausberg or Fürstenwalde. For such longer distances, we charge transparently by the kilometre from €3.80 per kilometre, plus the effort for loading and unloading.

Additional services such as clearance of old cellar rooms in the large estates, professional packing of moving boxes or a special senior move with particularly careful support are calculated individually and communicated clearly in advance. This way you keep full control of costs on every move in Marzahn-Hellersdorf and receive a tailor-made quote that fits your situation exactly – with no nasty surprises at the end of moving day.

Popular moving routes from and to Marzahn-Hellersdorf

Marzahn-Hellersdorf is not only a destination but also a frequent starting point for moves to other Berlin districts and the surrounding area. Thanks to the good connections via Landsberger Allee, the B1/B5 and the nearby A10, we regularly organise moves on the following routes:

  • Marzahn-Hellersdorf – Prenzlauer Berg: popular with young families moving from new builds in Hellersdorf to the period neighbourhoods of Prenzlauer Berg.
  • Marzahn-Hellersdorf – Friedrichshain: a common route for students and commuters.
  • Marzahn-Hellersdorf – Kreuzberg: in demand for moves to urban, centrally located neighbourhoods.
  • Marzahn-Hellersdorf – Moabit and Wedding: classic connections for business relocations and changes of flat towards the west of the city.
  • Marzahn-Hellersdorf – Gesundbrunnen and Tiergarten: popular with working people who want to move closer to the city centre.

Connections to more northerly areas such as Niederschönhausen, the Hansaviertel or Haselhorst in Spandau are also part of our regular route portfolio, as are long-distance moves towards Brandenburg via the A10, for example to Strausberg, Ahrensfelde or Werneuchen.

For smaller transports on these routes, we also offer a part load, in which your goods are transported together with other consignments in a space-saving and cost-effective way. Whether within the city or beyond the district boundary – we plan the route from Marzahn-Hellersdorf according to traffic and time of day.

Thanks to the clear structure, you always keep track of your move in Marzahn-Hellersdorf – from the first enquiry to the last box set down in your new flat or office.

Parking ban in Marzahn-Hellersdorf: road traffic authority at Schkopauer Ring

According to service.berlin.de, the road traffic authority of the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district is located at Schkopauer Ring 2, 12681 Berlin. You can reach it on (030) 90293-7620 or by email at [email protected]. The portal gives the opening hours as Thursdays from 3 to 5 pm and by appointment. For getting there, it names Mehrower Allee S-Bahn station (S7) and bus routes 197, X69 and N96.

  • An informal application is sufficient.
  • The minimum fee is €21; the amount depends on scope and duration.
  • Processing takes about four weeks on average.
  • The authority only issues the order. The signs are put up by a specialist construction-site safety company.

State the street, house number, period and the required length of the space in the application. This applies to the streets on the edge of the large estates just as much as to detached-house streets in the villages.

Ideally, check before applying whether the desired space outside the building is free of roadworks, parking ticket machines or bus stops. Because of the processing time of around four weeks, plan generously and coordinate with the property management if courtyard or garage entrances are affected.

Our guide to the parking restriction zone offers more background on the procedure.

Marzahn-Hellersdorf: large estates, villages and neighbourhoods at a glance

According to the district office, the district comprises five neighbourhoods: Biesdorf, Hellersdorf, Kaulsdorf, Marzahn and Mahlsdorf. Almost 292,000 people live here (as of 31.12.2023) on 61.8 square kilometres. The large estate area of Marzahn and Hellersdorf contains around 100,000 flats, home to around two thirds of the population. The small-house settlements of Biesdorf, Kaulsdorf and Mahlsdorf extend over about two thirds of the district's area.

This results in two very different moving situations. In the large estates, the lift, property management and carrying route are decisive; we clarify them during the survey. In the housing estates and village centres, the access, garden and outbuildings count. According to the district office, Kaulsdorf has a well-preserved village centre with a village church and four-sided farmsteads.

Our neighbourhood pages help you find your way: Marzahn, Hellersdorf, Mahlsdorf. You will find the neighbouring district under Lichtenberg.

The sub-districts are more fine-grained than the neighbourhoods: the district office names nine sub-districts, including Marzahn-Nord, Marzahn-Mitte, Marzahn-Süd, Hellersdorf-Nord, Hellersdorf-Ost and Hellersdorf-Süd. That is why we ask for the exact address with every enquiry, not just the neighbourhood.

According to the district office, the district has an almost seamless local public transport network, and Biesdorf Palace has its own U-Bahn and S-Bahn connection. This makes it easier for helpers to travel in without a car.

Always one step ahead.
