Key answers for your move in Potsdam
From our location at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit it is about 35 road kilometres to Potsdam, for example via the A115 or the B1. Moves between Berlin and Potsdam can therefore usually be completed in one day, even for larger flats.
Old-town lanes and new-build estates: how we plan in Potsdam
A move in Potsdam differs considerably in some respects from a purely Berlin move – not least because of the particular location of Brandenburg's state capital. Potsdam lies about 35 road kilometres south-west of our location in Berlin-Moabit and is very well connected to the trunk road network via the A10 (Berlin ring road), the A115 towards Zehlendorf/AVUS and the federal roads B1 and B2. For our team from Stromstraße 21, this means a short journey from Berlin.
The historic city centre around the Dutch Quarter, the Alter Markt and Brandenburger Straße poses particular challenges for moving teams: narrow cobbled streets, pedestrian zones with tight delivery windows and listed buildings with narrow stairwells and no lift. Babelsberg on the Griebnitzsee also has numerous period buildings and villas where access and carrying routes should be clarified in advance.
A typical move with us starts with a free survey – by video or by arrangement – followed by a transparent fixed-price quote. We then clarify whether a no-parking zone is needed, pack your belongings properly and carry out the actual transport, whether it is a private move or a commercial move.
- Free survey by video or by arrangement
- Individual fixed-price quote with no hidden costs
- Professional packing and furniture assembly
- Journey from Berlin-Moabit, transport and assembly
As Potsdam includes both Wilhelminian-era residential quarters and modern new-build areas such as Drewitz or Kirchsteigfeld, we adapt our approach to each residential location – from the narrow old-town lane to the modern underground car park in a new-build area.
From Babelsberg to Groß Glienicke: residential areas in Potsdam
Potsdam is divided into many neighbourhoods with very different characters, which directly affects the planning and execution of a move in Potsdam. The city centre with the Dutch Quarter and Sanssouci Park is characterised by historic buildings, while districts such as Waldstadt I and II, Am Stern or Drewitz are mainly characterised by prefabricated panel buildings and multi-storey housing from the 1970s to the 1990s – here lifts are usually available, which makes transport easier.
Babelsberg, with its famous film studio and the villa quarters on the Griebnitzsee, is one of Potsdam's most sought-after residential areas, as are Bornstedt and Bornim in the north, where there are spacious plots with detached houses. The Golm district, known for its Science Park and the University of Potsdam campus, is strongly shaped by students and young families. In Groß Glienicke, Fahrland, Neu Fahrland and Sacrow, rural living by the water predominates, often with long approaches for removal vans along narrow roads.
- City centre & Dutch Quarter – historic period buildings
- Babelsberg – villas, film studios, location on the Griebnitzsee
- Waldstadt, Am Stern, Drewitz, Schlaatz – multi-storey housing with lifts
- Bornstedt & Bornim – detached houses in northern Potsdam
- Golm – university campus and Science Park
- Groß Glienicke, Fahrland, Neu Fahrland, Sacrow – rural waterside locations
For each of these residential areas we clarify vehicle size, parking options and time windows during the survey. Especially for a senior move in quieter residential areas such as Bornim, we place particular emphasis on consideration and a stress-free process.
Calculating moving costs in Potsdam realistically
The moving costs in Potsdam depend on several factors: size of the flat, floor, distance, accessibility of the street and any extra services required, such as packing service or furniture assembly. As a rule, a move within one district, for example from the city centre to Babelsberg, is cheaper than a move with a long approach from the surrounding area, for example from Fahrland or Groß Glienicke.
As a rough guide, we have summarised our guide prices for Potsdam in a table. We always determine the actual costs individually after a free survey.
| Service | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Move, one-room flat | from €354 |
| Move, two-room flat | from €584 |
| Move, three-room flat | from €915 |
| Long-distance move (per kilometre) | from €3.90/km |
| No-parking zone (per day) | €30–100 |
Additional cost factors in Potsdam can include narrow old-town lanes without direct access, for which longer carrying-distance surcharges apply, or missing lifts in period buildings around the Alter Markt. Special services such as piano transport or a complete clearance of the old flat are also reflected in the final price, but are always communicated transparently in advance.
- Free, non-binding quote before the move
- Fixed price after a survey with no hidden surcharges
- Transparent billing by effort for extra services
- Special terms for student and senior moves
This way you keep full control of the costs of your move in Potsdam from the first enquiry to the last box.
Loading zone in the city centre and in Babelsberg
Especially in Potsdam's densely built city centre, in the Dutch Quarter or in the narrow streets of Babelsberg, there is often a shortage of parking space for the removal van. A no-parking zone applied for in good time ensures that a loading area is kept free directly in front of the door on moving day – this saves long carrying distances and protects against fines from Potsdam's public order office (Ordnungsamt).
We clarify with you whether a zone is needed; the application and signs follow the city's requirements (see the section on the road traffic authority). The costs of a no-parking zone are between €30 and €100 per day, depending on the street and duration. In particularly busy areas such as Brandenburger Straße, Luisenplatz or around Bassinplatz, the signs should be in place as early as the city's order requires so that the zone takes effect.
- Clarifying whether a no-parking zone is needed
- Submitting the application to the City of Potsdam in good time
- Reserved space directly in front of the door
- Avoiding fines and long carrying distances
In districts with detached houses, such as Fahrland, Groß Glienicke or Bornim, a no-parking zone can also be sensible if narrow streets or vehicles parked opposite make access difficult. In new-build areas such as Drewitz or Am Stern, on the other hand, there is often enough space in designated parking areas, so a zone is not always necessary. We check the situation during the survey and advise you whether, and to what extent, a no-parking zone makes sense for your move. This saves you unnecessary costs while ensuring a smooth process on moving day.
From Potsdam to Berlin and the surrounding Brandenburg area
Many moves in Potsdam do not go far: to Berlin, to the surrounding area or to another town in Brandenburg. Our location at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit is about 35 road kilometres from Potsdam; the route runs via the A115 or the federal road B1, and the Berlin ring road A10 connects Potsdam with the rest of the surrounding area. We also handle moves within Brandenburg, for example to Brandenburg an der Havel, Falkensee, Oranienburg, Frankfurt (Oder) and Cottbus.
For smaller quantities, such as individual pieces of furniture or a few boxes, there is the part-load: your goods travel along on a run that is already planned in that direction. This is practical if you only want to take individual items from Potsdam to relatives in Berlin.
- Moves between Potsdam and Berlin in both directions
- One contact person from enquiry to moving day
- Part-load for smaller moving volumes
- Arrival time agreed in advance
For longer distances, our price list states from €3.90 per kilometre, depending on the moving volume and vehicle type; you receive the binding price as a fixed price after the survey. When scheduling, we take into account roadworks and typical congestion times on the Berlin ring road and the AVUS so that the arrival time remains realistic.
Services for your move in Potsdam
As a moving company from Berlin-Moabit, we offer a broad range of services in Potsdam that goes well beyond pure furniture transport. Whether a private move in the city centre, a company move in the Golm Science Park or a senior move into an assisted living project in Bornim – we provide the right team and equipment for every situation.
If you want to declutter before the move or have to hand over a flat broom-clean after moving out, you can add our clearance service, which we offer by arrangement in Potsdam and the surrounding area. For delicate and heavy single items such as grand pianos or pianos, for example in the historic flats around the Neuer Markt, we also handle piano transport with our own securing equipment.
- Private and senior moves with personal support
- Office and company moves including IT dismantling
- Clearance of cellars, attics and entire flats
- Piano transport with suitable securing
- Part-load for smaller transport volumes
Narrow access in the Dutch Quarter, housing estates in Waldstadt and villas in Babelsberg have different requirements – we clarify them during the survey. We rely on packing material, blanket and edge protection for stairwells and a team size that is stated in the quote beforehand. On request, we also take care of final cleaning and minor repairs so that you don't have to worry about anything.
Moving offices in Golm, Babelsberg and at the main station
Potsdam is not only the state capital and seat of administration but, with the Golm Science Park, the studios in Babelsberg and numerous medium-sized companies in various commercial locations, also an important business location. A company move in Potsdam therefore requires minimal downtime, precise planning and a team that also transports sensitive equipment safely.
For your company move we plan all steps with you: from dismantling and safely packing office furniture and IT equipment, through labelling by department, to prompt reassembly at the new location. Especially for public authorities, research institutions or start-ups around the University of Potsdam, we place particular emphasis on discretion and the protection of sensitive documents and server components.
- Move planning with minimal business interruption
- Professional dismantling and assembly of office furniture
- Safe transport of IT and server equipment
- Labelling system for fast reassembly
- Scheduled moves also possible at weekends or in the evening
As many company premises in Potsdam, for example around the station, Am Stern or in the commercial areas towards the A10, are easily accessible by lorry, we plan arrival times and any no-parking zones needed so that ongoing operations are disrupted as little as possible. If required, we also coordinate moves between several locations, for example when a company moves from Potsdam to Berlin or to other Brandenburg towns such as Falkensee or Oranienburg, ensuring a smooth, well-documented process from the first plan to the last box.
Student moves in Potsdam & easy booking
With university sites in Golm, at the Neues Palais and in Griebnitzsee, Potsdam is a city with a high proportion of students who frequently move between shared-flat rooms, student halls and their first own flats. For this group we offer a dedicated student move tailored to smaller moving volumes, tight time windows around the change of semester and a limited budget.
Typical student moves in Potsdam often take place between halls of residence in Golm, shared flats in the city centre or Babelsberg and new flats around Drewitz or Am Stern. For these we offer compact vehicles, flexible dates even at short notice and fair fixed prices from €354 for smaller moving volumes, so that a move can be planned well even on a limited budget.
We deliberately keep booking simple: after a short enquiry by phone, email or contact form you promptly receive a non-binding quote, supplemented for larger moves by a free survey via video call or by arrangement. Once the date is confirmed, we agree the details, from the question of a no-parking zone to the provision of boxes.
- Specially calculated prices for students
- Short-notice dates around the change of semester
- Easy booking by phone, email or online form
- Free initial consultation and transparent fixed-price quote
- Flexible extra services such as box hire or clearance
This makes the next move within Potsdam, or to and from Berlin, straightforward, plannable and affordable for students – from the first enquiry to moving into the new flat.
Applying for a no-parking zone in Potsdam: road traffic authority and deadlines
In Potsdam, you apply for a no-parking zone for your move to the road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde) of the state capital. According to the city's administration page, you should submit the application at least 14 days before the start of the move. The legal basis is § 45 (6) of the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO).
- The application contains details of the applicant, the reason, the location, the duration and an overview map or sketch.
- An application generally refers to one street.
- The fees depend on the extent of the restriction and are clarified case by case.
- You obtain and put up the traffic signs yourself, usually through a specialist company. According to the city, they must be put up and documented at least 96 hours before the start.
According to the city, the traffic order can now also be applied for online; however, it only covers the permit, not the signs. You can find the forms at potsdam.de/onlinedienste. If you need several streets, for example for loading and unloading at two addresses, submit several applications. You can find further information in our guide Applying for a no-parking zone.
Practical tip: submit the application well before the 14-day deadline, state the street as precisely as possible and enclose a simple sketch marking the desired area. This speeds up the authority's review and avoids follow-up questions. In densely built streets in particular, a photo of the spot helps.
Potsdam by district: residential areas, access and registration
In its population statistics, the City of Potsdam lists 32 districts (as of 31.12.2025, 188,288 inhabitants in total). Large districts are Stern (17,254), Bornstedt (16,317), Babelsberg Süd (13,935), Brandenburger Vorstadt (11,454) and Babelsberg Nord (11,188). According to the city, the Dutch Quarter lies centrally in the historic city centre. Other districts are Schlaatz (9,652), Drewitz (7,655) and Kirchsteigfeld (5,209).
For your move, the location is decisive: in the historic city centre and in Babelsberg we clarify access and stopping options for each address, in the large residential areas the route from the parking space to the flat door. Because an application refers to one street, it pays to state the moving-out and moving-in addresses precisely.
After moving in, you must register within two weeks. According to Potsdam, the city's electronic residence registration is free of charge and possible without an appointment; you need a BundID, an ID card with the online function and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). You can read more about costs and districts in Potsdam in our guide.
The city also lists the Historische Innenstadt (13,720), Zentrum Ost & Nuthepark (6,219) and Hauptbahnhof & Brauhausberg Nord (3,802) as separate districts. Bornim, Eiche, Golm, Fahrland and Groß Glienicke (4,808) are also districts of their own. If you are coming from Berlin, you will find information on no-parking zones at the moving-out location on our Berlin page.
