Access,
period buildings, short distances: moving topics in Tiergarten

Key topics around your move in Tiergarten
In Tiergarten, these three aspects are particularly often what makes a move run smoothly.

Parking & access in the Diplomatic Quarter

Embassy streets such as Klingelhöferstraße require early coordination and often a no-stopping zone for a secure parking space.

Period buildings without a lift

In Tiergarten Süd many period buildings have no lift – a furniture lift speeds up the transport considerably.

Short trips to neighbouring areas

Thanks to the central location, moves to Moabit, the Hansaviertel or Wedding can often be completed in a short time.

Moving in Tiergarten: answers to frequently asked questions

Key answers for your move in Berlin Tiergarten

Answers on access in the Diplomatic Quarter, no-stopping zones via the Mitte district office, period buildings without a lift and bulky waste – in brief for your move in Tiergarten.

For moves in the Diplomatic Quarter we clarify access early, for example with the property management or, where necessary, with a building's security service. We make no general statements about road closures, because they can change.

Moving in Tiergarten: park, embassies and period buildings in Tiergarten-Süd

The Tiergarten neighbourhood in the Mitte district is one of the most varied parts of Berlin – and that is exactly what makes moves here so distinctive. Around the Großer Tiergarten with its Victory Column (Siegessäule) you find the Diplomatic Quarter with its grand embassy villas, the government quarter at the Spreebogen, the Kulturforum with the Philharmonie and the Neue Nationalgalerie, as well as busy traffic hubs such as Potsdamer Platz. Anyone moving here encounters very mixed building stock: stucco-decorated period buildings at Lützowplatz, modern government buildings by the Spreebogenpark, embassy residences on Tiergartenstraße and dense residential blocks in Tiergarten Süd near Kurfürstenstraße.

As Praktik Transport und Umzüge – known under the brand Beste Umzug – we plan moves in this neighbourhood from Moabit, just across the Spree. Before the moving day we clarify where tight bends in rear courtyards make manoeuvring difficult, which access routes in the Diplomatic Quarter need coordination and where a furniture lift gets the job done faster than the stairwell. Whether a classic home removal into a period flat on Lützowufer, a company relocation for an office near Potsdamer Platz or an embassy move in the Diplomatic Quarter – we plan every move in Tiergarten individually and with local knowledge.

Tiergarten borders directly on other interesting neighbourhoods of Mitte such as the Hansaviertel and Moabit, so many moves take place within just a few kilometres. For us that means short journeys, good familiarity with the area and the ability to handle short-notice appointments reliably. From the first consultation and the on-site survey to the last box in your new flat – we accompany you through the entire moving process in this lively, historic part of Berlin and make sure that your move in Tiergarten runs smoothly, transparently and without stress.

Moving in Tiergarten: process and particularities of the area

A move in Tiergarten differs markedly from a move in purely residential areas, because private flats, embassies, ministries and cultural buildings sit close together here. In the Diplomatic Quarter around Klingelhöferstraße, Rauchstraße and Tiergartenstraße there may be additional security measures near embassies; we clarify in advance whether and how this affects your access. We plan such moves early and with lead time so that there are no delays on the moving day.

Things look different in Tiergarten Süd, for example around Lützowplatz or Genthiner Straße: Gründerzeit period buildings with narrow stairwells, slim hallways and often no lift dominate here. In such cases a furniture lift is often advisable to save time and protect walls and banisters. In the government quarter near the Spreebogenpark, too, where modern new builds with underground car parks and wide corridors stand, moves are technically simpler but regulated by access restrictions and bollards.

Public transport also shapes the area: the S-Bahn station Tiergarten (S5, S7, S75) and the proximity to Zoologischer Garten station bring commuter traffic, while the U-Bahn stations Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park (U2) and Bundestag are very busy. Removal vans therefore often have to load and unload outside peak hours, especially on the busy Straße des 17. Juni or around Potsdamer Platz.

For smaller quantities, such as individual pieces of furniture from an embassy flat or a partial clearance, we offer flexible part-load transport. If a flat or cellar has to be cleared before you move in, we handle this as part of our clearance service – properly, swiftly and with fair cost calculation.

Our moving services in Tiergarten at a glance

Around Tiergarten we offer the complete range of moving services – tailored to the different ways people live and work in the neighbourhood. For private individuals moving out of a period flat on Lützowufer or a new-build flat near the Spreebogenpark, our home removal is the right choice: from the kitchen to the piano, we pack and transport everything safely and on schedule.

As numerous ministries, associations, law firms and businesses are based in the government quarter and around Potsdamer Platz, company relocation is one of our frequently booked services in Tiergarten. We organise the move outside regular office hours, secure sensitive documents and keep disruption to day-to-day operations to a minimum.

In the culturally rich area around the Kulturforum, the Philharmonie and the music schools nearby, piano transport is also in demand. Our trained team moves grand pianos and uprights professionally through narrow stairwells or by furniture lift via the balcony – without risk to the valuable instrument.

For older people moving, for example, from one of the quieter residential areas in Tiergarten Süd into a step-free flat, we offer a considerate senior move with support for dealing with authorities and registering the new address. After the transport we can also take care of furniture assembly on request, so that wardrobes, beds and shelves are ready to use straight away.

If bulky waste or the contents of a cellar also need to be disposed of, our clearance service is a sensible addition to the move. And for individual pieces of furniture to be taken along on the way to or from Tiergarten, our part-load transport is the cost-effective solution.

No-stopping zone and parking for your move in Tiergarten

Parking space is a central issue for every smooth move in Tiergarten. In the Diplomatic Quarter along Tiergartenstraße, Klingelhöferstraße and Rauchstraße, embassy vehicles and security posts are often present, so free parking spaces are rare. Around Potsdamer Platz and the Straße des 17. Juni, too, the high volume of traffic and tourist use create constant parking pressure.

In the period-building areas of Tiergarten Süd, for example on Lützowstraße, Lützowplatz or Genthiner Straße, the streets are also often narrow and parked up on both sides – a removal van rarely finds a suitable spot right outside the front door on the spur of the moment. For this reason we recommend our no-stopping zone service for almost every move in this neighbourhood.

We take care of the entire application to the responsible authorities for you, put up the mobile no-stopping signs in good time before the moving date and document the signage with photographs. This secures a clear area right outside your door – ideal for the removal van and all the helpers. It not only saves valuable time but also reduces the risk of fines involving wrongly parked third-party vehicles during the move.

The no-stopping zone is particularly important for moves in the government quarter, where access is in places additionally regulated by bollards and security checks, and for embassy moves in the Diplomatic Quarter, where early coordination with security services can make sense. For moves to or from neighbouring Moabit, forward planning of parking space is also worthwhile, as many streets there are similarly densely built up. Contact us early – the sooner we apply for the no-stopping zone, the more certain the parking space on moving day.

Moving costs in Tiergarten – transparent fixed prices

Moving costs in Tiergarten depend on several factors: the size of the flat, the floor, whether there is a lift, the distance to your new home and the scope of additional services such as packing, furniture assembly or a no-stopping zone. As the neighbourhood includes both compact period flats at Lützowplatz and spacious new-build flats near the Spreebogenpark, costs vary noticeably depending on the individual situation.

So that you can plan from the outset, we always calculate with a fixed price rather than vague hourly estimates. After a free on-site survey – digitally by video or in person at your flat – you receive a binding quote that includes all agreed services. This rules out unpleasant surprises on the invoice later on.

The most important cost factors for moves in Tiergarten include in particular:

  • Floor and whether there is a lift, for example in the period buildings on Lützowstraße or Corneliusstraße
  • Access options and parking situation, especially in the Diplomatic Quarter and around Potsdamer Platz
  • Additional services such as furniture assembly, packing service or piano transport
  • Distance to the destination, for example for moves to neighbouring Wedding or more distant parts of the city
  • Need for a no-stopping zone for a secure parking space

You will find a detailed overview of typical price ranges and sample calculations for Berlin on our page about moving costs in Berlin. There you can get a realistic impression in advance, before we draw up an individual quote tailored to Tiergarten.

Period buildings, new builds and furniture lifts: living and moving in Tiergarten

Hardly any other Berlin neighbourhood combines as many architectural contrasts as Tiergarten. In Tiergarten Süd, around Lützowplatz, Lützowufer and Corneliusstraße, Gründerzeit period buildings with high ceilings, stucco details and often narrow, winding stairwells dominate. For furniture transport in these buildings a furniture lift is often the most efficient solution, especially if there is no lift or bulky items such as wardrobes, sofas or pianos have to be moved. We use the furniture lift via a balcony or window where appropriate, protecting banisters, walls and the schedule.

In contrast stand the new builds and government buildings around the Spreebogenpark and the Federal Chancellery, which usually have wide corridors, modern lifts and underground car parks. Such buildings make transport easier but often require prior notice to the property management or security service, especially in the immediate vicinity of the ministries.

Another special feature is the Diplomatic Quarter with its detached embassy villas along Stülerstraße and Rauchstraße: there are generous plots here, but in some cases also special access rules, which we clarify early. In the dense residential blocks near Kurfürstenstraße, on the other hand, some rear courtyards are tight, which requires precise manoeuvring of the removal van.

Our team brings the right equipment for each of these building types – from classic stairwell transport and the furniture lift to smooth handling in modern new builds. After the transport we can take care of furniture assembly straight away on request, so that shelves, beds and wardrobes are ready to use again immediately – whether in a period building at Lützowplatz or a new build at the Spreebogenpark.

Popular moving routes from Tiergarten

Many of the moves we handle from Tiergarten lead to the directly adjacent neighbourhoods of Mitte. Customers particularly often move to neighbouring Moabit, which is popular with families for its quieter residential streets and proximity to the Spree, or to the elegant Hansaviertel with its open post-war modernism around Bartningallee. Moves towards Wedding and Gesundbrunnen are also part of our day-to-day business, for example when young families move from more expensive Tiergarten to more affordable areas in the north of Mitte.

We also regularly handle moves across the district boundary, for example towards Charlottenburg via the Straße des 17. Juni or towards Schöneberg across the Landwehrkanal – both routes we cover quickly and without major detours thanks to Tiergarten's central location. The good connection to the A100 city motorway and the central location near Potsdamer Platz and the Hauptbahnhof also make Tiergarten an ideal starting point for moves to other Berlin districts.

It is not unusual for our customers from the diplomatic and political sphere to move beyond Berlin, for example when posted to another capital or elsewhere in Europe. For such routes we plan reliable long-distance moves with a firm date commitment, secure loading and a transparent cost structure. Whether the journey is just a few kilometres within Mitte or several hundred kilometres across Germany – we check the routes from Tiergarten in advance and plan every trip so that your belongings arrive safely and on time.

Booking a move in Tiergarten: process and an insider tip for the area

Booking your move in Tiergarten with us is straightforward and transparent. First, you get in touch with us by phone, email or our online form. We then arrange a free survey – either in person at your flat, for example at Lützowplatz or in the Diplomatic Quarter, or conveniently by video call. On this basis we draw up a binding fixed-price quote that covers all the services you want, such as home removal, furniture assembly or a no-stopping zone.

Once you accept, we take care of all organisational details in good time: applying for the no-stopping zone, providing moving boxes and packing materials, and coordinating with property managers or security services if your move takes place in the government or diplomatic quarter. On the moving day itself, our well-practised team handles transport, dismantling and reassembly and, on request, complete assembly in the new flat.

A small insider tip for everyone who has just moved to Tiergarten: after the work is done, treat yourself to a walk through the English Garden (Englischer Garten) in the Großer Tiergarten or a detour to the Café am Neuen See, where you can relax wonderfully on a boat trip or in the beer garden. An evening stroll along the Landwehrkanal or to the illuminated Victory Column is also well worth it to get to know your new area from its most beautiful side.

Whether a small student move into a flatshare near the Hansaviertel, an elaborate company relocation in the government quarter or a delicate piano transport to the Kulturforum – we look forward to handling your move in Tiergarten professionally, in a friendly manner and with the necessary local knowledge. Contact us today for your no-obligation quote.

No-stopping zone for your move in Berlin-Tiergarten: applying to the Mitte district office

If you want to keep a parking space free for the removal van in Tiergarten, you need an order under road traffic law. According to service.berlin.de you apply for it to the road traffic authority of the district in which the no-stopping zone is to apply – for Tiergarten, that is the Mitte district office (Bezirksamt Mitte). The portal names no special requirements; an informal application is sufficient.

The Mitte road traffic authority is part of the Roads and Green Spaces Office (Karl-Marx-Allee 31, 10178 Berlin, telephone (030) 9018-22823, email [email protected]). Note these key points:

  • Fee: according to service.berlin.de at least €21.00, depending on scope and duration
  • Processing time: roughly four weeks, so plan early
  • The authority only issues the order; it does not put up the traffic signs – road works safety companies are suitable for that
  • The portal does not mention an online application option

In the application, state the street, house number, date, time and the desired length of the area. A different body may be responsible for main roads: according to the Mitte road traffic authority, measures on main roads are generally the responsibility of the central road traffic authority at the Senate Department. For large streets, therefore, ask about responsibility in advance. Plan the time window generously: according to service.berlin.de the fee depends on scope and duration, but a window that is too tight can quickly become a problem on moving day. Find out more about our service under no-stopping zone.

Tiergarten at a glance: Diplomatic Quarter, government quarter and access on moving day

The Tiergarten neighbourhood belongs to the Mitte district and, according to the district office, borders the Hansaviertel and Moabit to the north (separated by the Spree), Mitte to the east, and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Schöneberg and Kreuzberg to the south. Its defining features are the Großer Tiergarten with around 210 hectares, the government quarter, Potsdamer Platz and the Kulturforum.

According to the district office, the Diplomatic Quarter lies in the western part of the neighbourhood between Stauffenbergstraße and Lichtensteinallee. For a move this means: before choosing a date, find out which streets around your address are affected, and have the access checked during the survey. We deliberately make no general statements about closures near embassies or government buildings, because they can change from day to day.

According to the district office, the Straße des 17. Juni serves as a venue for major events, including the annual New Year's Eve party. Around such dates it is worth checking the events calendar before you fix the moving day and the no-stopping zone.

Which routes are needed inside the building depends on the floor, lift and stairwell. We record this during the free survey and only price the move afterwards. For flats in the surrounding area, see also our page on moves in Berlin-Mitte.

Always one step ahead.
