Key answers for your move in Berlin Hansaviertel
Our team reaches the Hansaviertel quickly via Straße des 17. Juni or Levetzowstraße and is familiar with the narrow access routes around Hansaplatz. Thanks to good connections to the U9 and Bellevue and Tiergarten S-Bahn stations, we plan arrival times realistically.
Moving in the Hansaviertel: living in the listed Interbau 1957 ensemble
The Hansaviertel is one of the most architecturally significant neighbourhoods in Berlin-Mitte. After its extensive destruction in the Second World War, a unique ensemble of point tower blocks and row buildings was created here as part of the Interbau 1957, designed by international architects such as Alvar Aalto, Walter Gropius and Oscar Niemeyer. This history makes every move in the Hansaviertel a task that calls for sensitivity: many buildings on Bartningallee, Klopstockstraße or Altonaer Straße are listed, which means stairwells, façades and entrance areas must be treated particularly gently.
As a moving company from neighbouring Moabit, we factor in the structural features of this neighbourhood from the start. The slender point tower blocks usually have a lift, but it is often smaller than in modern new builds, so large items frequently have to be moved via the stairwell or with a furniture lift. At the same time, the flats in the Hansaviertel are mostly in quiet locations, surrounded by plenty of greenery between Tiergarten and the Spree, which makes the moving day itself pleasantly relaxed – provided the logistics are right.
The location right by Hansaplatz U-Bahn station (U9) and within walking distance of Bellevue and Tiergarten S-Bahn stations (S5, S7, S75) provides excellent connections, but also means that residents' parking spaces are rare. We therefore plan every move in the Hansaviertel with sufficient lead time, check the access situation on site and coordinate parking restriction zones, lift sizes and the number of floors early on. This way your move runs smoothly without affecting the historic buildings or the neighbours. From Levetzowstraße to Schleswiger Ufer, we check the routes in the neighbourhood in advance and find a suitable solution for every living situation.
Our moving services for residents of the Hansaviertel
Whether a small flat in a point tower block or a flat in one of the around 30 surviving older buildings, for example on Flensburger Straße – our moving services in the Hansaviertel are tailored to the different types of housing in this neighbourhood. For private households we offer a complete household move, in which we handle everything from packing and transport to reassembling the furniture. Companies based around the nearby government quarter also rely on our company move, which brings office equipment, IT and files safely and on schedule to the new location.
As many flats in the Hansaviertel from the Interbau era have angled floor plans and narrow doors, professional furniture assembly is particularly valuable: we dismantle wardrobes, shelves and beds properly and reassemble them in the new flat so that nothing is damaged. For music lovers in the neighbourhood we also handle piano transport – a task that, especially in point tower blocks with narrower lifts, calls for special equipment and trained staff.
If you want to get rid of furniture and household items you no longer need when moving out of a flat on Altonaer Straße or Hansaplatz, you can use our clearance. Older residents of the Hansaviertel, who have often lived in their flats for a very long time, benefit from our sensitive senior move, in which we take particular time over organisation and the process. All services can be combined individually, so you book exactly the scope your move in the Hansaviertel actually needs.
Organising a parking restriction zone and parking in the Hansaviertel
Anyone who has ever tried to find a parking space for a removal van spontaneously in the Hansaviertel knows that parking around Hansaplatz, Bartningallee and Schleswiger Ufer is limited. The combination of residents' parking, tourist interest in the Interbau architecture and the already narrow streets means that, without preparation, a removal vehicle often has to stand several hundred metres away. This is exactly where our parking restriction zone comes in.
We handle the complete application to the responsible authorities in Mitte for you, take care of putting up the signs in front of your building in good time and make sure the lorry can stand right outside your door on moving day – whether on Klopstockstraße, Lessingstraße or Schleswiger Ufer. This not only saves time but also protects your furniture, as long carrying routes through narrow entrances or across several streets are avoided.
Especially for moves from the upper floors of the point tower blocks, a reliable loading zone is worth its weight in gold: every extra metre between the vehicle and the entrance means more effort for our team and a higher risk of scratches or damage to furniture. Because the ServicePortal Berlin states a processing time of about four weeks, we apply for the parking restriction zone as soon as possible after the order is confirmed. Contact us early – we take care of the formalities while you concentrate on packing. This keeps moving day in the Hansaviertel relaxed, without stress over parking spaces or waiting times.
Moving costs and a fixed price for your move in the Hansaviertel
The moving costs in the Hansaviertel depend on several factors: the size of the flat, the floor, whether there is a lift and the scope of services you want. A compact two-room flat in one of the point tower blocks can usually be moved faster and more cheaply than a large family flat with lots of furniture and delicate fittings from the 1950s. Extra services such as furniture assembly, piano transport or a parking restriction zone also affect the total price.
So that you can plan from the start, we work with transparent fixed prices instead of vague hourly estimates. After a short survey – on site or digitally by video – you receive a binding quote covering all the agreed services. This rules out surprise extra costs on moving day. Our overview of moving costs in Berlin gives you a good first idea of realistic price ranges in the city and helps you estimate your budget for the move in the Hansaviertel.
Especially for moves from listed buildings, a detailed survey in advance is worthwhile, as it allows us to check whether special equipment such as a furniture lift is needed or whether the existing lift is sufficient for bulky items. These factors feed directly into the calculation and prevent unexpected extra costs on moving day. Our aim is to offer you a fair, understandable price that matches the actual situation of your flat in the Hansaviertel – whether it is a small move within the neighbourhood or an extensive move with complete furniture assembly.
Point tower blocks, row buildings and furniture lifts: moving in listed buildings
The buildings in the Hansaviertel are unique in Berlin: instead of classic old buildings with a Berlin room (Berliner Zimmer), the streetscape is shaped by slender point tower blocks, low row buildings and individual low-rise buildings – a direct result of the Interbau 1957. This special architecture brings its own challenges for moves. Many buildings, for example along Händelallee or on Klopstockstraße, are listed, which means stairwells, banisters and façades must be treated with particular care.
Most point tower blocks do have a lift, but it is often narrower than in modern new builds from after reunification. Large sofas, wardrobes or a piano often do not fit through. In such cases we use a furniture lift, which carries items safely out via the balcony or window without putting strain on the narrow stairwell. For professional piano transport, this is often the most practical solution in the Hansaviertel in particular.
Row buildings with fewer storeys, on the other hand, sometimes have no lift at all, so furniture has to be carried via the stairs – what counts here is careful carrying that manoeuvres even bulky items safely round tight bends with carrying straps and the right angle. After the transport, our furniture assembly takes care of professional reassembly, so that shelves, beds and wardrobes are ready for use straight away in the new flat. As many residents of the Hansaviertel value the preservation of the historic buildings, we always work with edge protectors, floor coverings and wall protection to prevent damage to stairwells and hallways from the outset.
Popular moving routes from the Hansaviertel
Thanks to its central location in Berlin-Mitte, the Hansaviertel is the starting point for numerous moving routes within the city and beyond. We particularly often handle moves to the directly adjoining neighbourhood of Moabit, which can be reached quickly via Levetzowstraße and the Spree riverside path. The route to the Tiergarten neighbourhood, directly south of the Hansaviertel, is also one of the short and straightforward routes we drive regularly.
Other popular destinations are the Wedding and Gesundbrunnen neighbourhoods in the north of Mitte, which are easy to reach across Moabit. Some households move from the compact flats of the point tower blocks to larger period flats in the north of Mitte when they need more space. The reverse route – moving into the Hansaviertel because of its proximity to the Tiergarten and the government quarter – is also one we often handle.
For pieces of furniture or individual items that do not fill a whole lorry, we offer flexible part-load transport, in which your goods travel affordably together with other consignments. If a bigger move outside Berlin is coming up, we also reliably handle long-distance moves out of the Hansaviertel – thanks to good connections via the nearby Hauptbahnhof and the urban motorway, getting to the motorways in all directions is straightforward, which has a positive effect on planning and costs.
Process and booking for your move in the Hansaviertel
A well-organised move in the Hansaviertel begins long before the actual moving day. In the first step we carry out a survey – either in person at your flat on Bartningallee or Klopstockstraße, or conveniently by video call. We record the size of the flat, check the lift situation and clarify whether a parking restriction zone or a furniture lift is needed. You then receive a transparent fixed-price quote that includes all the services discussed.
After the order is confirmed, we plan the specific process: if needed, we apply for the parking restriction zone in good time at the responsible authority in Mitte, agree when boxes and packing materials will be delivered, and fix the exact moving date together with you. On moving day itself our team handles the professional dismantling and assembly of furniture, safe transport through the sometimes narrow stairwells of the point tower blocks and, if booked, final assembly in the new flat.
We recommend booking your moving date in the Hansaviertel as early as possible, especially if a parking restriction zone is needed or the move falls in a particularly busy time of year. For questions and individual arrangements we are available by phone, email or via our online form. Whether it is a compact household move within the neighbourhood, a company move to the office buildings near the government quarter or a long-distance move planned well ahead – we support the entire process from the first enquiry to the last box in the new flat and make sure every step is clear and well coordinated.
Insider tip: living and moving in the Hansaviertel
If you are new to the Hansaviertel, you will quickly discover that, despite its central location in Mitte, this neighbourhood is surprisingly quiet and green. Between the point tower blocks lie extensive green spaces, originally laid out as part of the urban planning concept of the Interbau 1957 – a deliberate contrast to the dense development of the neighbouring areas. A real insider tip for new residents is a walk along Schleswiger Ufer on the banks of the Spree, which offers a calm counterbalance to the bustle of the city centre and at the same time a lovely view of the neighbourhood's architecture.
The Hansabibliothek library and the small green spaces around Hansaplatz also invite you to linger once the stress of moving is over. Practical for everyday life: Hansaplatz U-Bahn station (U9) takes you to Zoologischer Garten in a few minutes or on towards Osloer Straße, while Bellevue and Tiergarten S-Bahn stations offer quick connections towards Hauptbahnhof and Ostkreuz. If you get around by bike, you benefit from the quiet, traffic-calmed streets in the interior of the quarter, which differ markedly from busy main roads such as Straße des 17. Juni.
When moving in, it is also worth taking a look at the individual buildings: as almost every building in the Hansaviertel was designed by a different Interbau architect, floor plans, ceiling heights and window fronts sometimes differ considerably – even within the same street. If you know this in advance, you can plan your furniture accordingly. Our team will be happy to advise you during the survey on the particular features of your future flat, so that your move to the Hansaviertel is well prepared from the start.
Parking restrictions in the Hansaviertel: applying to the Mitte Roads and Green Spaces Office
The road traffic authority of the Mitte district is responsible for a parking restriction for a move in the Hansaviertel. According to the ServicePortal Berlin, it is part of the Roads and Green Spaces Office (Straßen- und Grünflächenamt), Karl-Marx-Allee 31, 10178 Berlin. You can reach the office by phone on (030) 9018-22823 or by email at [email protected].
The application is informal; the ServicePortal does not list any requirements. Expect a processing time of about four weeks. The minimum fee is €21.00 and depends on the scope and duration of the parking restriction. Important: the office issues the order, but no traffic signs. The signs are put up by a commissioned company that is generally authorised to set up traffic signs, for example a site safety provider.
The parking restriction applies on moving day, so that the removal van can park in front of the old and the new flat. The ServicePortal does not give a fixed application deadline; nor does it set the duration, but the duration affects the fee. In the application you should state the house number, the length required and the moving date. According to the district office, the Hansaviertel is predominantly residential with only a little commerce; loading and unloading therefore takes place directly in front of the residential buildings, where you need to keep the space clear. Information as of October 2026.
You can read more about the service on the parking restriction zone page. The district overview is under moving in Berlin-Mitte.
Hansaviertel: Berlin's smallest neighbourhood between the Spree and the Tiergarten
According to the Mitte district office, the Hansaviertel lies between the Spree and the Großer Tiergarten and borders Moabit, Tiergarten and Charlottenburg. At 0.53 square kilometres it is Berlin's smallest neighbourhood by area, but one of the most densely populated. Its historic centre is Hansaplatz, near Hansaplatz U-Bahn station, with the Akademie der Künste and the GRIPS Theater.
The quarter was founded in 1874 as a residential area by the „Hansa“ company. In the Second World War around 90 per cent of the buildings were destroyed; of 343 buildings, about 300 lay in ruins. For the Interbau competition, 53 architects from 13 countries were invited, including Alvar Aalto, Walter Gropius, Egon Eiermann, Oscar Niemeyer and Max Taut; 35 buildings were built to their designs. The ensemble is now listed. Today, according to the district office, the area is predominantly residential with newer buildings.
For your move this means: the buildings are constructed very differently, and with listed buildings questions about the façade or access may arise. Clarify whether any conditions apply with your property management and, if necessary, the district office; we check the carrying routes in advance during the survey. Neighbouring areas are Moabit and Tiergarten; another neighbourhood in Mitte is Wedding.
