Key answers for your move in Moabit
As we work regularly in Moabit and the neighbouring areas such as Tiergarten and Wedding, we can usually offer short-notice dates. For a binding commitment, however, we still recommend enquiring about your move early.
Moving in Moabit: between the Spree, the ship canal and the Westhafen Canal
Moabit is one of the most exciting neighbourhoods in the Mitte district – a real river island, enclosed by the Spree, the Berlin-Spandau Ship Canal and the Westhafen Canal. This island location creates a dense network of bridges, but also traffic bottlenecks that need to be considered when moving. Anyone moving from Turmstraße, Rostocker Straße, Stromstraße or the area around Mathilde-Jacob-Platz knows the mix of busy shopping streets and quiet residential areas that characterises Moabit.
As a moving company in Moabit, we know the connections well: the U9 (Turmstraße and Westhafen stations), the Ringbahn stations S41/S42 at Beusselstraße and the proximity to Hauptbahnhof. This matters, because many streets in Moabit are narrow, some are single-lane, and residents' parking dominates. Our teams plan every route in advance to avoid parking restrictions, roadworks on Turmstraße or delivery traffic around the Arminius Market Hall.
With us, a move in Moabit always starts with a thorough survey of the property – whether for a household move into a period flat on Levetzowstraße or a company move into one of the offices near the Moabit criminal court. We then prepare a transparent quote that takes into account the floor, the amount of furniture and the access situation. On moving day itself we handle the transport, protection of the stairwells and, on request, the complete logistics including interim storage. This keeps the move in Moabit plannable and predictable for our customers, whether it stays within the neighbourhood, goes to a neighbouring area such as Wedding or across Germany.
An overview of moving services for the Moabit neighbourhood
Moabit is diverse – from Gründerzeit period buildings on Waldstraße and modern flats on Lehrter Straße to offices near the Westhafen. That is exactly why, as a moving company in Moabit, we offer a wide range of services that we tailor individually to every residential or commercial situation. For private households we handle the complete household move, from packing help to assembly in the new home, while for businesses along Stromstraße or in the office complexes on Sickingenstraße we organise a smooth company move with minimal disruption to operations.
If you do not want to move the whole flat, you benefit from our part-load transport – ideal for smaller moves within Moabit or as an affordable option for moves with little loading volume. For household clearances, for example after a change of tenant on Rathenower Straße, we take care of furniture, bulky waste and hazardous waste disposal properly as part of our clearance service.
Special items are also in good hands with us: for musical instruments in Moabit's often well-appointed old buildings, we offer professional piano transport with special equipment for narrow stairwells. After the transport, our fitters handle the professional assembly and dismantling of wardrobes, shelves and kitchens as part of our furniture assembly service. For older Moabit residents who want a move that is physically easy on them, our sensitive senior move is available, which can also include dealing with the authorities and registering the new address. So that a space is ready directly outside the door on moving day, we also take care of the right parking restriction zone.
Organising a parking restriction zone and parking in Moabit properly
Anyone who has ever tried to find a parking space for a removal van spontaneously on Rostocker Straße or around the Kleiner Tiergarten knows that parking in Moabit is tight. Large parts of the neighbourhood are in the Mitte paid parking zone, and many side streets are further restricted by one-way systems, roadworks on Turmstraße or delivery zones for the Arminius Market Hall.
So that the removal van can stand directly outside the door on the day, we handle the complete application for a parking restriction zone at the responsible Mitte Roads and Green Spaces Office. We take care of the signage, coordination with residents and, if the van is to drive into one of the narrow courtyards between Stephanstraße and Wiclefstraße, arrangements with the property management. This way our customers avoid fines, long carrying distances and stress on moving day.
Planning early is crucial especially near Hauptbahnhof, where new builds in the Europacity border Moabit, and around Fritz-Schloß-Park with its heavy traffic. For commercial moves too, for example from office buildings on Invalidenstraße near Moabit, a parking restriction zone set up in good time ensures that the lorry and moving team can work without long distances. Because the ServicePortal Berlin states a processing time of about 4 weeks, we apply for the zone as early as possible so that the order and signage are in place in time. Our team also makes sure that fire brigade access routes and emergency routes stay clear in Moabit's densely built streets. This turns parking on moving day into a mere formality instead of a search.
Moving costs in Moabit: transparent fixed prices instead of nasty surprises
The question of moving costs comes up particularly often in Moabit, as the range of flats is enormous – from a compact period flat on Emdener Straße to a spacious new-build flat on Lehrter Straße. On our page on moving costs in Berlin we explain in detail which factors influence the price: flat size, floor, whether there is a lift, distance to the new address and any extra services needed, such as packing materials or assembly.
In Moabit, how easily the property can be reached also plays a role: narrow courtyards on Wiclefstraße or scarce parking around Turmstraße can increase the effort, but can be calculated well with a parking restriction zone set up in good time. If you only want to transport a few pieces of furniture, you often save considerably with part-load transport compared with a complete move.
As a rule we work with fixed prices, which are set in writing after a free survey – on site or by video. This way our customers in Moabit know from the start what the move costs, with no hidden surcharges for floors, kilometres or waiting time in the parking restriction zone. Even for larger projects, such as a complete company move over several office floors, or a long-distance move from Moabit to another German city, the pricing model remains clear. Extra services such as clearance or piano transport are listed separately, so that the calculation stays transparent for our customers at all times.
Moving out of an old building in Moabit: furniture lifts and stairwell challenges
Moabit is characterised by magnificent Gründerzeit buildings, such as those on Rostocker Straße, Stephanstraße or around Ottopark. High ceilings, wide window fronts and stucco-decorated façades often go hand in hand with narrow, winding stairwells without a lift. For bulky furniture, pianos or large wardrobes, the classic route through the stairwell is then impractical or too risky for the handrail and walls.
In such cases we use a furniture lift, which carries furniture safely up the façade directly to the window or balcony in question. This saves time, protects the historic stairwell and is the much gentler solution, especially for moves to the upper floors of the old buildings between Levetzowstraße and Rathenower Straße. For musical instruments we also recommend our piano transport, in which trained staff work with special straps and dollies.
Besides the old buildings, post-war buildings and prefab blocks, for example in the Beusselkiez around Beusselstraße, and modern new builds near the Europacity also shape Moabit. Here there is usually a lift, but access routes to underground car parks or delivery zones need to be considered. Our teams are prepared for both situations and bring the right equipment with them – from carrying straps to the furniture lift. After the transport, as part of our furniture assembly service, we also take care of professionally assembling beds, wardrobes and shelves, so that the new flat in Moabit is ready to live in straight away. Especially for older people moving from a period flat without a lift into a barrier-free flat, this combination of furniture lift and assembly is a noticeable advantage, which we offer as part of our senior move.
Popular moving routes from Moabit
Moabit is a central neighbourhood with excellent connections, which is why many moves take place within the immediate surroundings. We particularly often handle moves to the neighbouring Tiergarten neighbourhood, for example when families want to move from Turmstraße closer to the big park, or to the adjoining Hansaviertel with its striking post-war architecture.
Moves northwards to the Wedding neighbourhood, which can be reached quickly via Beusselstraße and the Ringbahn, and further on to Gesundbrunnen, where many young households are looking for a larger flat, are equally in demand. These short distances allow us to carry out moves in several stages on one day, which is a particular advantage for company moves with a tight time window.
Via the Beusselstraße junction on the A100 urban motorway and its proximity to Hauptbahnhof, Moabit also has excellent links to the national transport network. This makes the neighbourhood a good starting point for long-distance moves to other major German cities such as Hamburg, Hanover or Munich. Our vehicles are equipped for long distances, and if needed we combine the long-distance move with part-load transport to save costs when the whole loading space is not needed. Whether the route is just a few streets within Moabit or right across Germany – we plan it so that parking restrictions, roadworks and rush hours cause as little delay as possible.
How your move in Moabit works: from enquiry to moving in
A smooth move in Moabit begins long before the actual moving day. In the first step, customers contact us by phone, email or via our contact form and give us the key details: flat size, current address, for example on Stromstraße or Waldstraße, desired destination and special requirements such as piano transport or clearance.
We then arrange a free survey – either on site in the neighbourhood or digitally by video call. We record the access situation, check whether there is a lift and clarify whether a parking restriction zone is needed. On this basis we prepare a binding fixed-price quote that covers all the services you want, such as a household move, furniture assembly or clearance.
On the agreed moving day our team arrives punctually, protects stairwells and door frames with protective material and loads the furniture in an organised way, room by room. If needed, we use a furniture lift or organise access via the parking restriction zone set up beforehand. After the transport, everything is assembled in the new flat, including connecting lamps, assembling wardrobes and fitting the kitchen. For business customers we also coordinate the process with the IT department, so that servers and workstations are up and running again as quickly as possible. Finally, we carry out a joint handover inspection and remain available for questions. This clear structure – enquiry, survey, fixed price, execution, follow-up – ensures that a move in Moabit is plannable and stress-free for our customers, whether it is a small part-load transport or a complete flat move.
Insider tip: discovering Moabit away from the main roads
If you have just moved to Moabit, take time for a walk through the neighbourhood once the moving work is done. A real insider tip away from busy Turmstraße is the Kleiner Tiergarten, a green oasis with old trees that invites you to relax after carrying boxes. Just a few minutes' walk away is the Arminius Market Hall, one of the last surviving historic market halls in Berlin, with fresh fruit, vegetables and small food stalls under an impressive steel-and-glass roof – ideal for sorting out your first meal in the new flat without fuss.
The Spree bank at the Moabiter Werder also offers quiet paths for a breather, while the Geschichtspark Ehemaliges Zellengefängnis (history park on the site of the former cellular prison) on Invalidenstraße creates a quiet contrast to the dense housing. Sports enthusiasts will find running routes and sports grounds right on their doorstep in the Poststadion and Fritz-Schloß-Park.
For families it is also worth looking at the small, owner-run shops on Rostocker Straße and around Arminiusplatz, which preserve an authentic neighbourhood life away from the big chains. If you still want to get rid of furniture or other items after the move, you can have them disposed of easily via our clearance service instead of driving to the recycling centre several times yourself. This way a move to Moabit brings not just a new home but also access to a neighbourhood with historic charm, green retreats and short distances to the Spree and the canal – qualities that make Moabit unique among Berlin's neighbourhoods.
Applying for a parking restriction in Moabit: Mitte district office, fee and lead time
Our depot is at Stromstraße 21 in Moabit, but the reserved space in front of your building is approved by the authority. According to the ServicePortal Berlin („Haltverbot für Umzüge“), the Roads and Green Spaces Office (Straßen- und Grünflächenamt) of the Mitte district office is responsible for Moabit (Karl-Marx-Allee 31, 10178 Berlin, telephone (030) 9018-22823, email [email protected]).
- Application: informal; the ServicePortal does not list any special requirements.
- Fee: at least €21.00, depending on scope and duration.
- Processing time: about 4 weeks, so apply early.
- Signage: the office issues the order but does not provide signs. The ServicePortal recommends a specialist site safety company.
According to berlin.de, Moabit is surrounded by the Spree, the Berlin-Spandau Ship Canal, the Westhafen Canal and the Charlottenburg Connecting Canal, and 25 bridges link the neighbourhood with the mainland. This is worth bearing in mind when planning the route, because the bridge you use often determines the way to your destination. The Kleiner Tiergarten and Ottopark lie between Turmstraße and Alt-Moabit; whether and where stopping is allowed there is governed by the signs. A reserved space for the removal van requires an order from the district office. More on this in our guide to the parking restriction zone and on the page for the Mitte district.
In the application, state the street, house number, date and the desired length of the space. If you have questions, you can reach the office on the phone number above. If your destination is in another district, the application goes to the responsible road traffic authority there; according to the ServicePortal, what matters is the district in which the parking restriction is set up.
Stephankiez, Beusselkiez and Westfälisches Viertel: residential areas and access in Moabit
According to berlin.de, the north of Moabit is characterised by tenement blocks (Mietskasernen) and industry, while the south is considered more middle-class. The Stephankiez is a well-preserved Gründerzeit quarter in which, according to berlin.de, around 90 per cent of the historic buildings survive. The buildings date mainly from 1870 to 1910 and have large floor plans, high ceilings, stucco façades and branching rear courtyards. berlin.de names Stephanplatz as its centre; tall street trees and old cobblestones shape the streets. According to berlin.de, Turmstraße is the residents' most important shopping area.
According to berlin.de, Moabit is considered young and international; well-known places include Fritz-Schloß-Park with the listed Poststadion and the Arminius Market Hall near Turmstraße U-Bahn station. The Beusselkiez is shaped by the AEG turbine hall, while the Westfälisches Viertel lies between Stromstraße, Alt-Moabit, Gotzkowskystraße and the Spree and has some bourgeois townhouses. On the Moabiter Werder there are flats for members of the Bundestag and federal employees.
For your move this means: in Gründerzeit buildings we check the stairwell, courtyard access and carrying route; for buildings with a rear courtyard, the passageway often decides whether we can get right up to the entrance. We only give dimensions and effort after a survey. After moving in, according to the ServicePortal, the 14-day deadline for registration applies; according to berlin.de, nearby green spaces are the Moabiter Stadtgarten, Unionpark and the Kleiner Tiergarten. For destinations nearby: Wedding, Tiergarten and Hansaviertel.
