Your questions about moving in Saarland

Moving in Saarland, Germany's smallest territorial state
Praktik Transport und Umzüge organises your complete move in Saarland – from the first consultation to the last moving box. Our base is in Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21); we do not have a branch in Saarland. We therefore ask about the particular features of Germany's smallest territorial state before every job. From Stromstraße to the towns in Saarland it is around 695 to 740 road kilometres, usually via the A9, A4 and A5 – more than one day's driving time for a lorry, so we firmly plan in breaks.
Saarland is divided into five districts and the Saarbrücken regional association: the Regionalverband Saarbrücken, the Saarpfalz-Kreis, the Landkreis Saarlouis, the Landkreis Neunkirchen, the Landkreis Merzig-Wadern and the Landkreis St. Wendel. This small-scale but dense structure means short distances between the towns – ideal for flexible moving dates and combined tours, for example when several households in neighbouring municipalities are moving at the same time.
Throughout Saarland we look after private individuals, families, students and companies alike. Our range of services extends from the classic private move and the office move to dedicated services such as piano transport or house clearance. We clarify long distances, the proximity to the borders with France and Luxembourg and narrow town-centre locations before moving day. This gives you planning certainty, transparent prices and a fixed price after a survey.
Moving in Saarland: the most important towns and regions at a glance
Saarland may be small in area, but it offers an astonishing variety of towns, landscapes and moving requirements. From the state capital to the industrial towns on the Saar – we plan moves in all regions of the state.
- Saarbrücken: The state capital and largest city in Saarland is the only German state capital that borders directly on a neighbouring country. Its proximity to the French border (Forbach is only a few kilometres away) makes the city an important hub for moves and part-loads near the border.
- Saarlouis: The fortress town built by Vauban impresses with its historic old town with narrow lanes, which require special vehicle logistics for moves.
- Neunkirchen: Shaped by the industrial history of the former ironworks, today with a modern housing market and good connections to the A8.
- Völklingen: Known for the Völklingen Ironworks UNESCO World Heritage Site, with established residential quarters near the Saar.
- Homburg: University town with Saarland University Hospital, characterised by student and family moves and the well-known Schlossberg caves.
In addition to these five towns, we also plan moves in smaller municipalities such as St. Ingbert, Merzig, Dillingen or Sankt Wendel. Whether a town-centre location, a new-build estate or a rural region along the Saar – we adapt vehicle size, team size and scheduling individually to each moving destination.
Regional features when moving in Saarland
A move in Saarland differs significantly in some respects from a move in flatter or more metropolitan federal states. The region is characterised by a hilly upland landscape – the Saargau, Bliesgau and Warndt make for winding access roads, especially in more rural municipalities away from the A620 and A6.
Another factor is the immediate border location with France and Luxembourg. Many Saarlanders work or commute across the border, which becomes relevant particularly for part-loads to neighbouring countries. We plan the routes near the border via the A8 towards Perl/Luxembourg and via Forbach to Lorraine in advance; within the EU there are no customs formalities for household goods.
Town centres such as Saarbrücken's St. Johann quarter or the old town of Saarlouis often consist of narrow streets with limited parking. Here we recommend setting up a parking restriction zone early, so that the removal van can stand right outside the front door and carrying distances stay short. Many period buildings in the suburbs of Neunkirchen or Völklingen also have narrow stairwells without a lift – for bulky furniture or a piano we therefore use carrying aids in a targeted way, see our piano transport.
Last but not least, the Saarland mentality plays a role: people here value personal contact, clear agreements and reliability – values that we live every day as a moving company. For long-distance moves in winter we also factor the weather and road conditions into the schedule.
Moving costs in Saarland: prices at a glance
The cost of a move in Saarland depends on several factors: size of the flat, distance, floor, accessibility and any additional services needed. We always calculate transparently and without hidden extra costs, so that you can plan your move in Saarland realistically.
| Type of move | Price from | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1-room flat | €344 | Local move within Saarbrücken |
| 2-room flat | €615 | Move from Homburg to Neunkirchen |
| 3-room flat | €905 | Family move within Saarlouis |
| Long-distance move (nationwide) | from €3.85/km | Berlin to Saarbrücken, approx. 722 km |
| Parking restriction zone | €30–100/day | depending on town and street width |
These figures are guide prices and may vary depending on individual needs. A local move within a town such as Völklingen or Saarbrücken is naturally cheaper than a long-distance move across Germany. If you also need house clearance of the old flat or want bulky special items such as a piano transported, you should state this directly in your enquiry so that we can prepare an accurate quote.
Timing also plays a role: moves at the end of the month or during the semester breaks of Saarland University in Saarbrücken and Homburg are in greater demand. If you are flexible with your choice of date, you can often benefit from more favourable terms. A non-binding quote from Praktik Transport und Umzüge quickly gives you clarity about the actual costs of your move in Saarland.
Long-distance and local moves in Saarland: routes, times, part-loads
Whether a short distance within Saarland or a long route from another federal state – at Praktik Transport und Umzüge you get both types of move from a single source. A local move in Saarland is usually completed within one day: Völklingen, for example, is only a few kilometres west of Saarbrücken, and Neunkirchen about 20 kilometres north-east of the state capital. These short distances make it possible to combine several smaller moves on one tour.
For a long-distance move to or from Saarland, the route to and from Berlin is particularly relevant: around 695 to 740 road kilometres from Stromstraße, usually via the A9, A4 and A5 – more than one day's driving time for a lorry. We firmly build stopovers, loading and unloading times and possible roadworks on this route into the schedule, so that your moving day runs smoothly.
For anyone who does not need the entire cargo space of a removal van, we offer a part-load – particularly attractive for smaller households or students who, for example, move from Berlin to Homburg to study. Part-loads near the border towards France (Forbach, Sarreguemines) or to Luxembourg via the A8 are also possible on request.
Regardless of the distance, we apply the same quality standard: careful packing, transport with liability under the German Commercial Code (HGB) and punctual delivery – whether a local move within Saarlouis or a long-distance move across the country.

Moving across the border: from Saarland to France and Luxembourg
France and Luxembourg are EU member states. The customs exemption for household goods described by zoll.de applies to moves from a non-EU country into the EU and does not play the main role here. The registration formalities are more important.
- EU rule: According to Your Europe, you usually do not have to register in the first 3 months in the new EU country, and after that possibly at the town hall or the local police station. In some countries registration is required on arrival.
- Luxembourg: According to Guichet.lu, anyone moving abroad must deregister with the municipality of their previous place of residence before leaving. When moving to Luxembourg, you register with the municipality of residence; some municipalities offer this online.
- France: Check documents and deadlines in advance with the mairie of your destination.
From Saarland the journey is short; the main route from our base on Stromstraße in Berlin-Moabit comes before it. Where possible, we plan return journeys and part-loads into the quote. Read more about the route in our guide to moving to France and under international move. Neighbouring regions are Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse.
According to Your Europe, anyone who fails to register in the destination country may risk a fine. So plan registration firmly into the first weeks after the move.
Parking restriction and registration in Saarbrücken and Saarlouis
Two towns, two responsible offices, both according to the municipal pages:
- Saarbrücken: The public order office (Ordnungsamt) is responsible for the parking restriction zone for a move (Großherzog-Friedrich-Straße 111). The application form is available as a PDF, and you make an appointment by phone on 115 or +49 681 9050 or by email. The city does not state a deadline there; the form requires signs to be in place at least 4 days beforehand. According to the city, registration is due within 2 weeks of moving in and is free of charge, online or at the citizens' office (Bürgeramt).
- Saarlouis: Road traffic matters are handled by the road traffic office (Großer Markt 1, telephone 06831 443-211, -212 or -216). The town does not have a dedicated page on parking restrictions for moves, so ask there. Registration at the citizens' office (Bürgerbüro) is free of charge and requires an appointment, which can also be booked online.
What applies in both cases: bring your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung); the tenancy agreement is not enough.
More about the towns can be found under Saarbrücken, Saarlouis and Homburg. Our guide to the parking restriction zone explains the general steps for obtaining a permit.
Opening hours in Saarbrücken (public order office): Mondays 8:30 am to 12 noon and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays 8:30 am to 12 noon, Thursdays 8 am to 6 pm. You can reach the Saarlouis registration office on 06831 443-226.
