Friedenau at a glance: Carstenn figure, U9 and narrow streets of period buildings
Friedenau is one of the most distinctive neighbourhoods in the district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg. Laid out from 1871 as a villa colony and an independent rural municipality from 1874, the neighbourhood around Rheinstraße, Handjerystraße and Fregestraße has kept its Gründerzeit charm. Anyone moving here knows the narrow side streets with tall period façades, winding rear courtyards and the dense perimeter-block development that turn a move in Friedenau into a small science of its own. Praktik Transport und Umzüge – known under the Beste Umzug brand – comes from Moabit and plans every move in Friedenau after surveying the address.
Friedenau is served by the U9 with the stations Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz and Walther-Schreiber-Platz, plus the Innsbrucker Platz Ringbahn station on its northern edge. Several bus routes cross the neighbourhood and provide good connections, but also a tight traffic network that has to be factored into every move. Around Perelsplatz, Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz and Breslauer Platz with its weekly market, period buildings line up one after another, their entrances and stairwells often narrow and shaped by history.
Whether a private move into a period flat at Kaisereiche or a company relocation of an office near Bundesallee – we plan every move in Friedenau individually, with a view to the specific street, the hallway and the parking situation on site. We check tight junctions, one-way streets and the historic streetscape in advance and adjust the vehicle size and approach route accordingly. This turns a complex inner-city move into a smooth process that respects Friedenau's special character while remaining efficient.
Moving services for the Friedenau neighbourhood
For Friedenau we offer the complete range of moving services, tailored to the residential and commercial structures of the neighbourhood. Around Fregestraße, Niedstraße and Bornstraße, classic rented flats in period buildings dominate, while more modern housing has been built at Friedenauer Höhe – both types of home require different approaches, which we take into account during the survey.
- Private move: for families and individuals moving within Friedenau or from here to other Berlin neighbourhoods – including careful packing and transport.
- Company relocation: for law firms, practices and offices along Rheinstraße or Bundesallee, with moves outside business hours where possible.
- Part-load transport: for smaller moving volumes or single pieces of furniture, cost-efficient and flexible to plan.
- Piano transport: Friedenau's venerable flats in particular often contain pianos or grand pianos that require careful transport through narrow stairwells.
- Furniture assembly: assembly and dismantling of wardrobes, shelves and kitchens directly on site, ideal for the often individually shaped layouts of period flats.
- Senior move: organised considerately and calmly, for example when changing to a low-barrier flat away from the upper floors of a period building.
- Clearance: for cellars, lofts and estate flats, as often found in Friedenau's historic buildings.
These services can be combined as you wish – for example a private move with clearance of the old cellar compartment, or a company relocation with subsequent furniture assembly in the new office. This way you get everything from a single source in Friedenau, tailored to your specific situation in the neighbourhood.
Parking restriction zone and parking when moving in Friedenau
Anyone moving in Friedenau knows the problem: along Rheinstraße, Sponholzstraße, Schmiljanstraße or Handjerystraße, parking space is scarce, and many streets are also in residents' parking zones. Without a reserved space directly in front of the door, the carrying distance to the removal van quickly becomes considerably longer, which costs time and nerves. This is exactly where our parking restriction zone service comes in: in good time before your moving date, we apply for a temporary no-parking zone directly in front of your address in Friedenau and take care of the coordination with the authorities and the signage.
This is particularly important in the more densely built-up sections around Perelsplatz, Breslauer Platz or the side streets of Kaisereiche, where parking spaces are scarce anyway and rush-hour traffic on Rheinstraße puts additional pressure on street space. For moves near the busy Bundesallee, too, a reserved loading zone is essential so that the removal van does not have to double-park.
We check one-way side streets in advance and plan the approach so that loading and unloading are possible without long detours. In narrow courtyards, typical of Friedenau's Gründerzeit buildings, we check beforehand whether there is direct access to the entrance or whether a furniture lift is needed to protect stairwells and speed up the move.
This is how we ensure that your moving day in Friedenau is not burdened by searching for parking or conflicts with residents, but runs in a structured way and according to plan from the start – a detail that makes the decisive difference in this densely populated neighbourhood.
Moving costs for a move in Friedenau
The moving costs for a move in Friedenau depend on several factors: the size of the flat, the floor, whether there is a lift and the distance to the destination. A second or third floor without a lift, as is common in many period buildings on Fregestraße or Niedstraße, requires more effort than a new build with a lift at Friedenauer Höhe. The parking situation and any need for a parking restriction zone are also factored into the calculation.
On our page on moving costs in Berlin you will find a transparent overview of how the price for your move in Friedenau is made up. We work on a fixed-price model as a matter of principle: after a short survey or virtual assessment of your flat, you receive a binding quote that remains valid throughout the entire move – with no hidden extra costs for carrying or waiting times.
A move within Friedenau, for example from Rheinstraße to Handjerystraße, is generally cheaper than a move to a more distant neighbourhood or a long-distance move to another federal state. For smaller loads, such as single pieces of furniture or boxes, part-load transport is often worthwhile, as it is considerably cheaper than a complete removal van. Additional services such as furniture assembly or clearance can also be included transparently in the fixed price, so that you know exactly from the outset what costs to expect.
Our aim is to make you a fair, market-rate offer for your move in Friedenau that realistically takes into account the particular features of the neighbourhood – tight access, limited parking, historic building fabric – instead of working with flat rates that miss the reality on the ground.
Period buildings, stucco and furniture lifts: moving in Friedenau flats
Friedenau is characterised by Gründerzeit period buildings with high ceilings, stucco features and often narrow, winding stairwells – an architectural appeal that nevertheless brings practical challenges when moving. Many buildings along Stubenrauchstraße, Bornstraße or Menzelstraße were built more than a hundred years ago and have no lift, so moving furniture over several floors would mean pure muscle work – were it not for the furniture lift.
Before every move in a Friedenau period flat, our team checks whether an external lift is worthwhile: it makes it possible to transport bulky furniture such as wardrobes, sofas or even pianos directly through the window or over the balcony, instead of manoeuvring them through narrow stairwells. Especially for piano transport on the upper floors of the period buildings around Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz, this method is often the gentlest and fastest solution, both for the instrument and for the historic banister.
Protecting the often listed building fabric is just as important: we cover landings, door frames and walls with blankets and edge guards so that neither stucco nor parquet is damaged during furniture transport. After transport, if required, we also take care of furniture assembly and adapt shelves or built-in wardrobes to the individual, often irregular layouts of Friedenau's period flats.
For new builds too, for example in the Friedenauer Höhe residential quarter on the former Wilmersdorf freight yard, we clarify structural conditions such as lift sizes and underground car park entrances and adjust our logistics accordingly. This way the move succeeds regardless of whether you are moving out of a stucco-decorated period flat or a modern new-build flat in Friedenau.
Popular moving routes from Friedenau
Friedenau lies in the north-west of the district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg and is the starting point for many moves to neighbouring areas and beyond. We particularly often handle moves to the directly adjacent Schöneberg, for example towards Schöneberg Town Hall or Kleistpark, as the two neighbourhoods merge seamlessly and many residents move within the district.
Moves further south towards Tempelhof, for example near Tempelhofer Feld, are also typical routes, as are moves to Mariendorf and Marienfelde, where many families from the more urban Friedenau look for a quieter residential area with more green space. Those drawn even further towards the city edge find a popular destination in Lichtenrade, which we also serve.
As Friedenau borders Wilmersdorf to the west and Steglitz to the south-west, many moves towards Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf or Steglitz are also obvious, even though these areas belong administratively to a different district. Good connections via Bundesallee, Rheinstraße and the Ringbahn make the logistical planning considerably easier.
Quite often, however, the journey also goes beyond Berlin's city limits: for everyone leaving Berlin we offer reliable long-distance moves to other federal states – from packing the first box in the Friedenau period flat to the final assembly of the furniture at the new home. Whether the move is just a few streets away or right across Germany, we plan every route with the same care as an inner-city move.
Process and booking of your move in Friedenau
A well-organised move in Friedenau begins long before the actual moving day. In the first step, we get in touch with you and clarify the key details: size of the flat, floor, lift or no lift, and the exact address, for example on Rheinstraße, Handjerystraße or in one of the quieter side streets. On this basis we draw up a binding fixed-price quote for your move.
- Free assessment of your moving volume, by phone, via the form or on site in Friedenau
- Individual fixed-price quote, tailored to the floor, access and the additional services required
- If needed, application for a parking restriction zone in front of your address
- Professional packing of household goods, delicate furniture and, if applicable, a piano
- Transport with a suitable vehicle, adapted to the narrow streets of the neighbourhood
- Assembly and furniture installation in the new flat, including fitting lamps or shelves
For flats on the upper floors of the period buildings around Perelsplatz or Breslauer Platz, we clarify early on whether a furniture lift makes sense and coordinate the schedule with the property management and any neighbours, to show consideration for the narrow stairwell. For company moves we also take into account access times for delivery vehicles and any loading-zone rules in the area.
Booking itself is straightforward: you can reach us by phone or via our contact form, receive a quote promptly and can reserve the date for your move in Friedenau directly. This leaves enough lead time to apply for any parking restriction zones in good time and to agree the process with you in detail.
Insider tips and local colour around Friedenau
If you are new to Friedenau, take time to discover the neighbourhood away from the main roads. The weekly market on Breslauer Platz, which has existed since 1881, is one of the most popular local shopping spots in the neighbourhood and a good place to buy fresh fruit, vegetables and regional products right after your move while getting to know your new neighbours. Around the square, numerous small cafés and owner-run shops have settled, giving the neighbourhood its village-like charm.
For a first walk after moving day, Niedstraße is worth a visit: Günter Grass lived at number 13 and Uwe Johnson at number 14 – a quiet introduction to the literary history of the neighbourhood. The quiet, tree-lined streets such as Albestraße or Bornstraße also invite exploration and show why Friedenau has been popular with families ever since it was founded as a villa colony.
New residents interested in history will find, at Friedenau Town Hall on Breslauer Platz, a glimpse of the neighbourhood's independent past – it was only incorporated into Greater Berlin in 1920. The proximity to Kaisereiche, one of the best-known junctions between Friedenau, Wilmersdorf and Schöneberg, also shows how centrally the neighbourhood is located despite its quiet character.
For anyone who has just moved in, it is also worth looking into the small second-hand and antique shops along Rheinstraße – a nice opportunity, after the clearance of your old flat, to discover new, suitable furnishings for your new address in Friedenau.
Applying for a parking restriction in Friedenau: Roads and Green Spaces Office Tempelhof-Schöneberg
The Roads and Green Spaces Office (Straßen- und Grünflächenamt) of the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district office is responsible for Friedenau. According to service.berlin.de, the address is Großbeerenstraße 2-10, Building 3, 12107 Berlin, office E.18. Phone (030) 90277-1520, email [email protected]. Opening hours are Mondays and Tuesdays, each from 9 am to 12 noon.
The application is informal and there are no prerequisites. The minimum fee is €21.00; the final amount depends on scope and duration. service.berlin.de states an average processing time of about 4 weeks. So submit your application early, as soon as the moving date is fixed.
The authority issues an order, but no traffic signs. To have the signs put up, contact a company, for example one specialising in roadworks safety. Clarify the payment method by phone in advance, as the fee information and the payment note on service.berlin.de do not quite match. In the application, state the street, the required length and the days of loading and unloading. Call before visiting, as the opening hours cover only two mornings.
We help you estimate the area required and coordinate the moving day with the permit. Read more on the topic under parking restriction zone and in the overview of Tempelhof-Schöneberg.
Friedenau: Carstenn layout, villas and apartment blocks when moving
Friedenau was founded as a country-house colony. The district office describes the “Carstennform”, a horseshoe-shaped layout around Handjerystraße and Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz. On Niedstraße, Albestraße and Handjerystraße there are still villas with small front gardens, several of which are listed monuments. However, many villas were replaced by four- and five-storey apartment blocks. For a move, this means that villas, front gardens and large residential buildings meet in a small space.
The neighbourhood is densely populated. According to the district office, 28,983 people live on 1.6 square kilometres (as of 31 December 2023). The district office names Bundesallee, Rheinstraße, Südwestkorso, Wilhelmshöher Straße, Stierstraße and Fregestraße as main roads. It describes the junction at Kaisereiche as a busy hub. To the right and left of Bundesallee and Rheinstraße lie quiet residential streets. According to the district office, Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz forms the central square of the Carstenn layout.
The district office also mentions a preservation regulation of 24 June 1986 for buildings erected before 31 December 1939. If you live in such a building, you should agree any alterations and furniture lifts on the façade with your landlord in advance.
A move to the neighbouring areas of Schöneberg or Mariendorf stays within the same district.
