We check access to your address near the Greenwichpromenade in advance and plan the drive outside the busiest day-trip times at Lake Tegel wherever possible. If needed, we also set up a parking restriction zone in the immediate vicinity.
Moving in Tegel: period buildings, cooperatives and tower blocks in the north-west
As a moving company for Tegel based in Moabit, we plan moves in Berlin's second-largest neighbourhood by area address by address. Whether it is a flat overlooking the Greenwichpromenade and Lake Tegel, a terraced house in Tegel-Süd or an office around the Borsigturm – Praktik Transport und Umzüge, known under the brand Beste Umzug, makes sure everything runs smoothly. Tegel is characterised by a colourful mix of historic buildings in the core of Alt-Tegel, the Freie Scholle cooperative estate and the housing complexes in Tegel-Süd; on the site of the former Tegel Airport, the Schumacher Quartier is also being planned and built. This variety places very different demands on a move, from the narrow staircase of a period building on Schloßstraße to the modern lift in a new build near the future Urban Tech Republic site.
In terms of transport, Tegel is very well connected via the U6 U-Bahn line with the stations Alt-Tegel, Borsigwerke and Holzhauser Straße, plus the S25 at Tegel station and several bus routes, for example to Heiligensee and Hermsdorf. For us as a Berlin moving company, this means short drives, reliable scheduling and the ability to fit your move flexibly around rush-hour traffic on Berliner Straße. We handle both the classic private move and the business move for companies in the commercial area on Buddestraße or in Borsighafen. Neighbouring areas such as Hermsdorf and Frohnau are also part of our daily area of operation, so moves within the district are routine work for us. If you are interested in a move in or out of Tegel, you will find in us a moving company that checks the local conditions in advance and turns them into a clear, predictable process.
Moving in Tegel: the process and what makes the neighbourhood special
For us, a move in Tegel always begins with a close look at where you live. The historic core around Alt-Tegel, Karolinenstraße and Gorkistraße is characterised by dense perimeter block development with some narrow entrances and tight stairwells. Here every minute of planning counts, so that furniture, boxes and electrical appliances can be moved through tight bends and low door frames without damage. In Tegel-Süd, by contrast, there are larger housing complexes from the 1960s and 1970s with wider corridors and usually a lift, which makes the process noticeably easier. In the listed Freie Scholle estate around the Schollenhof, we find single-family houses and cooperative flats where several floors without a lift are the rule.
We adapt our approach individually to each of these building types: for period flats on upper floors we check early on whether a furniture lift makes sense, and for the tower blocks in Tegel-Süd we check the lift size and the route to the entrance in advance. The proximity to Tegel Forest (Tegeler Forst) and the Flughafensee also plays a role, as on sunny weekends there is extra leisure traffic around the lakeside areas, which we take into account when scheduling. Before larger moves, our team is happy to carry out a short on-site inspection to realistically assess parking restriction zones, the parking situation and access routes. This way we avoid unpleasant surprises on the moving day and can also make short-notice adjustments without fuss, for example if a street around Buddestraße is closed. For private customers we offer the complete private move from a single source, from the first survey to the last box in the new flat – whether within Tegel or to a neighbouring area such as Wittenau.
Our services for your move in Tegel
In Tegel we cover the entire range of moving services, so you do not have to take care of anything yourself. Alongside the classic private move, we also regularly handle business moves for offices and smaller businesses around the Borsigturm and the commercial premises on Am Tegeler Hafen. As not every move fills a whole lorry, we also offer a part-load service – ideal if only a few pieces of furniture or moving boxes need to be transported, for example when changing flats within Tegel or towards the city centre.
Our services in Tegel include, among others:
- Complete private move with packing, transport and assembly
- Professional business move including IT and file relocation
- Piano transport for the many period flats with narrow stairwells
- Furniture assembly directly at the new home
- Clearance of cellars, attics and flats
- Applying for a parking restriction zone for the moving day
Especially in Tegel, where many flats contain high-quality upright or grand pianos – for example in the spacious period flats on Schloßstraße – our piano transport is in demand. Our team secures the instrument properly, carry it across narrow landings and set it up again ready to play at the new location. When it comes to furniture assembly, customers in Tegel can also rely on a trained team: shelving systems, wall units and kitchens are dismantled and reassembled properly so that the new flat can be used straight away. If you want to clear out a flat, house or cellar before the move, you can book our clearance service at the same time and save yourself an additional service provider.
Parking restriction zones and parking for your move in Tegel
Anyone who has ever tried to find a spontaneous parking space for a moving van in Alt-Tegel around Gorkistraße or Karolinenstraße knows the problem: parking is limited here, many streets are densely built and on sunny days the proximity to Lake Tegel attracts additional visitor traffic. In Tegel-Süd and along Berliner Straße, too, it can get tight depending on the time of day. So that your moving van can stand directly outside your front door on the day of the move, we set up a parking restriction zone in good time.
We handle the complete application to the responsible authority, put up the no-parking signs in good time before the moving date and document their placement with photos, so that there is no ambiguity in the event of a dispute. This not only saves you time but also prevents long carrying distances through narrow courtyard passages, which are common in many perimeter blocks around Alt-Tegel. Especially for moves to upper floors without a lift, a short distance from the vehicle to the front door makes a considerable difference to the speed and safety of the transport.
In addition, we check access options for larger vehicles in advance, for example if a furniture lift is needed for a period flat without a lift. In quieter residential streets, for example on the Freie Scholle estate or in Tegel-Süd, the parking situation is often more relaxed, but early coordination is worthwhile there too. Our aim is that on the moving day you do not have to worry about parking tickets, residents' parking permits or discussions with other road users, but can concentrate fully on your new chapter in life.
Moving costs and fixed price for your move in Tegel
The moving costs for a move in Tegel depend on several factors: the size of the flat, the floor, whether there is a lift, the distance to the new home and any extra services needed, such as a parking restriction zone, furniture assembly or clearance. A compact two-room flat with a lift in Tegel-Süd can generally be moved faster and therefore more cheaply than a large period flat on the third floor of a building on Schloßstraße without a lift. Our overview page on moving costs in Berlin gives you initial orientation on which price ranges are realistic and which factors affect the price.
So that you can plan from the outset, at Beste Umzug we always work with a transparent fixed price. After a free assessment – by phone, by video or during a personal survey on site in Tegel – you receive a binding quote with no hidden extra costs. This applies both to smaller moves within the neighbourhood, for example from Berliner Straße to a flat near the Greenwichpromenade, and to larger moves to neighbouring areas such as Konradshöhe or Lübars.
The fixed price takes into account, among other things, vehicle size, staff requirements, the packing material needed and the estimated carrying time. If you also need piano transport, clearance or complete furniture assembly, you receive these services as a clearly calculated component of the overall quote. This way you keep full control over costs from the first enquiry to the handover report and avoid unpleasant surprises at the end of the moving day.
Period buildings, cooperative housing and furniture lifts in Tegel
The historic centre of Alt-Tegel is characterised by classic Berlin period buildings with high ceilings, stucco-decorated façades and often narrow, winding stairwells. The streets around Schloßstraße, within sight of Tegel Palace (Schloss Tegel), or along Karolinenstraße are among the most popular residential areas in the neighbourhood – but they also present a move with particular challenges. Tight bends in the stairwell, low door frames and missing lifts are not unusual here. In such cases we deliberately use a furniture lift, with which bulky furniture, wardrobes or even grand pianos can be moved easily and without scratches, bypassing the stairwell and going straight through the window.
Besides the period buildings, cooperative estates from the 1920s and 1930s with solid brick buildings and green courtyards also shape Tegel. These buildings often have somewhat wider stairwells, but here too there is often no lift. Our team is prepared for exactly this kind of building and plans how furniture, washing machines or large wall units are moved safely across several floors without damaging walls, banisters or door frames. For particularly sensitive instruments we also recommend our piano transport, which works reliably even in narrow period stairwells.
In contrast, the newer housing complexes and tower blocks in Tegel-Süd generally have lifts and wider entrances. After the transport we take care of furniture assembly directly on request, so that beds, shelves and kitchen units are ready for use straight away – whether in a listed period building or a modern new build.
Popular moving routes from Tegel
There are some typical moving routes to and from Tegel, which we plan in advance for both addresses. Within the district of Reinickendorf, many people move between the quieter, green neighbourhoods: from Tegel to Frohnau with its generous plots, on towards Hermsdorf or into the village-like surroundings of Lübars. Moves between Tegel and the Märkisches Viertel or to Wittenau are also part of our everyday work, as many families move within the district when their housing needs change.
Via the U6, Tegel is also directly connected to central Berlin, which is why we regularly receive requests for moves towards Wedding, Mitte or Charlottenburg. Career changes also often lead to moves out of Tegel, for example when a new job in the south or east of Berlin makes a change of home necessary. For customers who want to transport smaller amounts of furniture or boxes over such a distance, our part-load service is often the most economical solution, as several moves heading in a similar direction share one vehicle.
Quite often, though, a move from Tegel also goes beyond the Berlin city limits, for example to other federal states or back to someone's home region. For such routes we offer reliable long-distance moves, applying the same careful planning as for a local move within Reinickendorf – from the parking restriction zone at the pick-up point in Tegel to punctual delivery at the new home. This way, customers moving long-distance also benefit from planning that clarifies parking and access in Alt-Tegel, Tegel-Süd and the neighbouring areas in advance.
Booking a move in Tegel: the process and a tip for afterwards
We keep the path to your moving date simple. First you get in touch, by phone, email or via our online form, and give us the key details: size of your flat, floor, whether there is a lift and your preferred moving date. On request, we visit your flat in Tegel in person, for example in Alt-Tegel, on Berliner Straße or in Tegel-Süd, to realistically assess access routes, possible bottlenecks and the need for a furniture lift. You then receive a binding fixed-price quote that includes all the services you want – from transport alone to a parking restriction zone, furniture assembly or clearance.
For older customers in particular, who in Tegel have often lived in their flat for a very long time, we also offer a sensitive seniors' move. We take extra time for the organisation, take care of the complete dismantling and assembly of the furniture and make sure everything runs smoothly, even when moving into a step-free flat or an assisted living facility. Once the date is confirmed, we supply all the packing material on request, take care of properly securing pianos, works of art or delicate electronics and are ready on the moving day with a well-coordinated team.
A little tip for afterwards: if you need some peace after a tiring moving day, you will find it on the Greenwichpromenade right by Lake Tegel – a short walk along the water with a view of the excursion boats quickly helps you forget the stress. The nearby Tegel Forest is also ideal for taking a breather after your move in Tegel before you start putting things away in your new home.
Applying for a parking restriction in Tegel: responsibility, fee and processing time
In Tegel you apply for the parking restriction to the road traffic authority of the Reinickendorf district office (Eichborndamm, 13437 Berlin, phone (030) 90294-2939, email [email protected]). According to service.berlin.de, an informal application is enough, and there are no special requirements. The fee is at least €21 and depends on scope and duration. Processing takes about four weeks on average; according to the page, you pay in cash or by Girocard.
The authority issues an order but does not put up traffic signs. That is done by a site safety company, which is generally authorised to do so. In the application, state the street, house number, date and the required length of the space. If you live near Lake Tegel or the Greenwichpromenade, give the exact section so that the authority can locate the space correctly.
Whether parking or stopping rules already apply at your address can be seen from the signs on site. Check this a few weeks before the move so that you can react in time. Keep the order to hand on the moving day. If questions come up, you can reach the office by phone or email. You will find more on this under parking restriction zone and in the guide Applying for a parking restriction zone: step by step. You can reach the district page via Moving Reinickendorf.
Tegel between Lake Tegel, the Borsigturm and the Tegel estate
Berlin.de describes Tegel as a popular destination for outings, with Lake Tegel, steamer trips and the Greenwichpromenade. At the same time, Tegel is a business location: Borsig, Motorola, MAN Turbo and Herlitz have sites there, and the Villa Borsig houses the Federal Foreign Office's academy. Tegel Airport closed in 2020, and the site is earmarked for the Urban Tech Republic.
For office and business moves in Tegel, this means: check access, loading times and the building operator's rules early so that furniture, equipment and files get into the building without waiting times. You will find more on this under business move.
When it comes to housing, the Freie Scholle building cooperative's Tegel estate is a special case. According to the cooperative, it comprises 401 single-family houses and 622 flats, the entire estate is a listed heritage site, and the cooperative's office is at Schollenhof 7 (13509 Berlin). House rules and information on heritage protection are available in the cooperative's information section. You should read these before the move. The cooperative also mentions generous green spaces and a large playground at the Schollenhof, which need to be considered when planning carrying routes. Berlin.de also lists schools, day-care centres, the adult education centre (Volkshochschule) and the Humboldt Library in Tegel. If you are moving with children, the guide Registering for day care and school has information on the process. For neighbouring areas, see Moving Konradshöhe and Moving Borsigwalde.
