Key answers for your move in Berlin Westend
We take care of the application and signage for a parking restriction zone with the road traffic authority of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office, for example outside period buildings on Kaiserdamm or in narrow residential streets of the garden suburb. The signs are put up in good time before your moving date, so that there is enough space for the lorry on moving day.
Westend: between the trade fair, the radio tower and villa streets
Anyone moving in Westend moves between two very different faces of west Berlin: on the one hand, the busy axis around Theodor-Heuss-Platz with its large roundabout, the exhibition halls at the ICC, the radio tower and Kaiserdamm as the main road towards the city centre. On the other hand, the quiet villa streets of the villa colony and of Neu-Westend around Brixplatz, plus the Olympic Stadium and Ruhwaldpark. As a removal company in Berlin Westend, Praktik Transport und Umzüge, under the Beste Umzug brand, plans for these contrasts from Moabit, address by address – from the narrow access on Nussbaumallee to the apartment building on Reichsstraße.
Westend has good transport links: the U2 stops at Theodor-Heuss-Platz, Neu-Westend and Kaiserdamm, and the Ringbahn with lines S41, S42 and S46 serves Westend station and Messe Nord/ICC. However, these good links also mean that the main roads are busy during the day, while the residential streets of the garden suburb and around Waldschulallee are much quieter but have less parking space. We adapt our move planning to exactly this mix – from the choice of date to the size of the vehicle.
Whether a classic home move from a period flat on Kaiserdamm, a company relocation near Messe Berlin or a move with a trailer from another federal state as a long-distance move – we plan every job individually and with a realistic estimate of time and costs. If you want to calculate in advance, you will find transparent reference points on our page on moving costs in Berlin. The neighbouring areas of Charlottenburg and Charlottenburg-Nord are also part of our regular area of operation, so we can handle moves within the district from a single source.
Moving in Westend: the process and particularities of the garden suburb
Large parts of Westend are characterised by villas and country houses: streets such as Lindenallee or Sensburger Allee are lined with detached and terraced houses with their own gardens, sometimes narrow driveways and limited turning space for larger vehicles. A 7.5-tonne removal van does not always fit right up to the door here – so during the survey we check carefully whether a smaller vehicle makes sense for the shuttle to and from the house, so as not to block residents and parked cars.
Things look different around Theodor-Heuss-Platz and Fürstenplatz: according to the district office, four- to five-storey apartment buildings were built here before 1914, and later apartment blocks and housing estates were added – some with a lift, some without. Anyone moving out of an upper floor without a lift benefits from our move with furniture assembly, in which wardrobes and beds are professionally dismantled on site, transported and reassembled in the new flat. Events at the Olympic Stadium or on the trade fair grounds can also briefly affect the parking situation and are taken into account when scheduling.
In the immediate vicinity of the Olympic Stadium and Olympic Park there are also some new-build projects that have been built in recent years and offer modern floor plans with a lift and underground car park – here a move can usually be organised more quickly and easily than in the period buildings on Kaiserdamm. For household liquidations, for example when moving out of one of the detached houses in the garden suburb, we also offer a structured house clearance that includes the cellar, attic and garden. This way Beste Umzug covers the entire spectrum required by Westend's varied buildings – from the villa to the housing co-operative flat.
Our services in Westend – from home moves to piano transport
For private households in Westend we take care of the complete home move – from the first estimate of how many boxes are needed to the last task in the new flat. Especially in the period buildings around Kaiserdamm with high ceilings and stucco elements, careful handling of furniture and walls is crucial, which is why we always bring edge protection and covering material. For companies near Messe Berlin, the ICC or along Masurenallee, where the broadcaster rbb is based among others, we offer the company relocation, including planning outside business hours, so that operations are interrupted as little as possible.
Not every move requires a complete lorry: if you only want to transport single pieces of furniture, for example from interim storage or an inheritance in one of the villas of the garden suburb, you can use our part-load transport and save costs. Many houses around Brixplatz and along Waldschulallee also have grand or upright pianos – for safely transporting these delicate instruments over stairs or with the furniture lift, we use our piano transport.
As many long-standing residents live in the garden suburb and the surrounding estates, the sensitive senior move is one of our frequent jobs: we handle assembly and dismantling, take care of formalities such as re-registration and make sure the move into assisted living or a smaller flat is as stress-free as possible. Our offer is rounded off by the move with furniture assembly, which gets kitchens, shelves and beds ready for use straight away at the new location – a service that is particularly appreciated given the narrow stairwells of the period buildings on Kaiserdamm.
Parking restriction zones and parking in Westend
Anyone who has ever tried to find a parking space for a removal van at short notice on Nussbaumallee or in one of the quiet side streets around Brixplatz knows the problem: the narrow streets of the garden suburb are usually full of parked cars on both sides, turning options are limited and stopping spontaneously right outside the door is rarely possible. On Kaiserdamm and around Theodor-Heuss-Platz, too, the heavy traffic means that double parking is neither safe nor permitted.
So that moving day runs smoothly, we apply in good time for a parking restriction zone outside the flat or house for our customers in Westend. This keeps space free for the lorry and the loading ramp on moving day, short carrying distances included – a noticeable advantage when, for example, everything has to come down from the fourth floor of a period building on Kaiserdamm without a lift. For the signage, we coordinate with the road traffic authority of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office and put up the signs within the prescribed lead time.
Around Reichsstraße and near the schools on Waldschulallee, too, it is worth reserving the parking restriction zone early, as there is additional traffic and cars searching for parking at certain times of day. In new builds with an underground car park, for example near the Olympic Park, the parking situation is more relaxed, but even here we recommend a short consultation to keep driveways and barriers clear. This way we make sure that neither neighbours nor delivery traffic are obstructed by our move, and the process remains predictable for everyone involved.
Moving costs in Westend – transparent fixed prices
The moving costs for a move into or out of Westend depend on several factors: the flat size and floor, whether there is a lift, the access situation in the street concerned and the distance to the new home. A move from a compact housing co-operative flat on Reichsstraße with a lift differs considerably in price from a move from a three-storey detached house in the garden suburb with a full cellar and garden. That is precisely why we rely on an individual survey or detailed photo documentation before we prepare a binding quote.
For customers in Westend we always offer a fixed price, which is set after the survey and is not increased afterwards even with a somewhat longer carrying distance – for example due to a parking restriction zone applied for on Kaiserdamm or narrow access on Sensburger Allee. This way our customers keep full control of costs, without nasty surprises at the end of moving day. If you want to compare prices for different flat sizes and distances in advance, you will find detailed guide prices and sample calculations on our page on moving costs in Berlin.
Additional services such as piano transport for a grand piano in one of the villas on Brixplatz, clearance of the cellar and attic or the furniture assembly service can be booked individually and are shown transparently in the quote. We also calculate short distances within the district fairly, for example a move from Westend to Halensee or Wilmersdorf, without applying flat-rate minimum prices meant for longer routes.
Period buildings, new builds and furniture lifts – moving in Westend's varied buildings
Hardly any Berlin neighbourhood combines such different building types as Westend: along Kaiserdamm and in parts of Reichsstraße stand classic period buildings with high ceilings, stucco ceilings and often narrow, winding stairwells, which quickly become a challenge for bulky furniture. Here we regularly use a furniture lift to transport wardrobes, sofas or a grand piano safely up or down the façade instead of through the narrow stairwell – a solution that spares walls, banisters and nerves.
In the actual Westend garden suburb, for example around Brixplatz or Waldschulallee, detached and semi-detached houses with two to three floors, their own garden and often a garage or parking space on the plot dominate. The advantage: no lift problem, but often steep internal stairs and limited space in the driveways for large items. Precise manoeuvring with smaller vehicles is required here, which we plan in advance during the survey.
A third picture emerges in the housing co-operative estates and more modern residential complexes, for example near Ruhwaldpark and the Olympic Park: here mainly new builds or renovated existing buildings with lifts, wider corridors and underground car parks are available, which makes moving furniture much easier. Regardless of the type of building, if needed we take care of the complete furniture assembly, so that beds, kitchen units and shelves are ready for use straight away at the new location. This way we match the vehicle size, team size and aids such as a furniture lift or carrying straps exactly to each type of home in Westend, instead of working with a standard solution.
Popular moving routes from Westend
Many moves from Westend stay within the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district or go to neighbouring areas. We particularly often handle moves to Charlottenburg, for example near the palace or the Kurfürstendamm, as well as to Wilmersdorf and Schmargendorf. Moving to green Grunewald or nearby Halensee is also one of the classic routes, as is the route to Charlottenburg-Nord with its large housing estates from the 1950s and 1960s.
Thanks to the direct link to the A100 city motorway via Messedamm and the proximity to the A115 towards the Grunewald and southern Berlin, moves beyond the district boundaries are also easy to plan – for example to Spandau via Heerstraße or towards Potsdam. For moves to other federal states or other European countries we offer our long-distance move service, in which we calculate transport times realistically and also organise interim storage if the new moving-in date has not yet been set.
Within Westend itself, short moves between the different residential areas are also not unusual: from a period building on Kaiserdamm to one of the housing co-operative flats on Reichsstraße, or from a detached house in the garden suburb to a low-barrier new-build flat near Ruhwaldpark. Such local moves can usually be carried out particularly efficiently and cheaply, as the distances are short and we check the road conditions in advance. Whether a short distance or a long-distance move – we plan the route so that peak traffic at Theodor-Heuss-Platz and on Kaiserdamm is avoided as far as possible.
Booking a move in Westend: the process and a local insider tip
The path to your moving date in Westend begins with a no-obligation survey – either on site in your flat or house, or digitally by video call if you need things to move faster. During the survey we record the flat size, access to the building, whether a furniture lift is needed and any special requests such as piano transport or house clearance. You then receive a transparent fixed-price quote that includes all the services discussed, from the basic home move service to applying for a parking restriction zone.
After your confirmation, we take care of all the organisational steps: putting up the signs for the parking restriction zone in good time before the date, providing moving boxes and packing materials, and agreeing the exact time so as to take into account delivery traffic on Kaiserdamm or events at the Olympic Stadium. On moving day itself, our team handles the complete process from loading and transport to assembly in the new flat, including furniture assembly on request.
As a little insider tip for the time after the move, we recommend a walk through Ruhwaldpark or around Brixplatz, one of the most beautiful green spaces in the neighbourhood with old trees – a quiet counterbalance once the last boxes have been unpacked. New Westend residents interested in architecture should also take a look at the Corbusierhaus on Flatowallee, a masterpiece of post-war modernism that impressively rounds off the neighbourhood's architectural range. Simply contact us by phone or via our enquiry form to arrange your individual moving date in Westend.
Parking restrictions for your move in Westend: road traffic authority and deadlines
For moving day you need temporary parking restrictions outside both the old and the new flat. According to the "Haltverbot für Umzüge" page on service.berlin.de, the district's road traffic authority (Straßenverkehrsbehörde) issues an order, but no signs; these are put up by a company that is permitted to put up traffic signs. An informal application is required; according to the page, there are no special requirements.
According to service.berlin.de, the minimum fee is 21.00 euros, depending on scope and duration, and processing takes approx. 4 weeks. For Westend, the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office is responsible; according to service.berlin.de, specific location information can currently only be found via the district office's website. So plan the application early. For larger roads such as Kaiserdamm, please clarify with the district office in advance who is responsible for your address.
The Westend villa colony was built from 1866 onwards on a plateau of the Grunewald. According to the district office, the area, laid out in a grid pattern, is bounded by Akazienallee to the north, Platanenallee to the south, Ahornallee to the east and Kirschenallee to the west; Branitzer Platz forms its centre. Grand upper-middle-class villas were built in spacious gardens. For the move this means: we check the access, garden paths and stairs with you in advance. You can find more about the service under parking restriction zone; we introduce the district under Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf.
Westend: Neu-Westend, Brixplatz and listed buildings when moving
According to the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf district office, in addition to the villa colony the Westend neighbourhood also includes Neu-Westend, Eichkamp, Heerstraße, Pichelsberg and the eastern part of the Ruhleben estate. According to the district office, there are 232 listed heritage sites in the neighbourhood, including 165 listed buildings and 24 listed gardens. Since 1985, a conservation ordinance has applied to the villa colony to protect its distinctive urban character.
The buildings are varied: in Neu-Westend, apartment buildings, terraced houses and detached houses were built from 1913 onwards. According to the district office, four- to five-storey apartment buildings with large flats were built around Theodor-Heuss-Platz and Fürstenplatz before 1914, terraced houses on Westendallee in the 1920s and later apartment blocks and housing estates. The park on Brixplatz by Reichsstraße is designated as a listed garden. Depending on the type of house, the stairwell, lift or garden access may therefore be bottlenecks; we clarify this during the survey. For villas with gardens, we also check garden paths, steps and the distance to the vehicle.
After moving in, you have 14 days in Berlin to register your residence free of charge; you need your ID and the landlord confirmation (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung). You can clear out with the BSR bulky waste collection. For this, the BSR requires a stopping space of at least 12 metres for the vehicle. You will find the neighbouring areas under Charlottenburg and Charlottenburg-Nord.
