Everything important about moving in Hamburg
A move within Hamburg starts from €375 for a one-room flat, from €605 for a two-room flat and from €894 for a three-room flat. The exact price depends on the floor, accessibility and amount of furniture.
Moving to the Hanseatic city: what we plan from Berlin
Praktik Transport und Umzüge organises moves throughout Hamburg – from the first box to the last piece of furniture. As Germany's second-largest city with around 1.9 million inhabitants, Hamburg presents moving companies with particular challenges: narrow old-town streets, dense residential quarters, an extensive port area and a large number of districts, each with its own character. We clarify these particularities before the appointment and make sure that your private move or company move runs smoothly.
Our location is at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit; it is about 284 kilometres to Hamburg via the A24, about three hours by car and longer by lorry. Whether moving within the Hanseatic city, from the Berlin area to Hamburg or in the other direction: our team plans every journey carefully, takes into account traffic volumes on motorways such as the A1, A7 and A23 and chooses the most efficient route.
Hamburg is shaped by its maritime history, the Elbe and numerous canals (Fleete) running through the city. This waterside setting makes for unique residential locations, but also for logistical particularities – for example when bridges are closed or delivery zones in HafenCity are limited. We clarify these conditions during the survey and adapt schedules, vehicle size and staffing accordingly.
Whether you are moving into a terraced house in Bergedorf, a period flat in Eimsbüttel or an office in the city centre: we offer tailor-made moving solutions for private individuals, families, students, seniors and companies. Transparent prices, open information about travelling from Berlin and careful preparation go without saying. In the following sections you can find out more about districts, the surrounding area, costs and the exact process of your move with us.
Seven boroughs from Altona to Harburg
Hamburg is divided into seven boroughs with more than 100 districts in total – each with its own character and its own requirements for a move. We clarify the particularities of each quarter for each address.
- Hamburg-Mitte: city centre, HafenCity, St. Pauli and the Speicherstadt – narrow lanes, high parking density and many new builds with modern lifts dominate here, but also historic office buildings (Kontorhäuser) without a goods lift.
- Altona: Ottensen, Bahrenfeld and Blankenese – from lively period-building quarters to quiet villa locations on the Elbchaussee.
- Eimsbüttel: popular with students and young families, many Wilhelminian-era period buildings with narrow stairwells.
- Hamburg-Nord: Winterhude, Eppendorf, Barmbek – upmarket residential areas with some narrow access roads.
- Wandsbek: Bramfeld, Rahlstedt, Volksdorf – many detached houses and terraced-house estates.
- Bergedorf: borough in the south-east, partly rural, connected via the A25.
- Harburg: south of the Elbe, with a growing new-build area and connections via the A1 and A253.
For a student move, the university quarters around Rotherbaum, Eimsbüttel and Winterhude are particularly relevant, as many shared flats and small flats are located here. Families often move to Wandsbek or Bergedorf, where more living space and green areas are available. Companies are increasingly settling in HafenCity, City Nord or along the Elbe – here too we handle company moves on tight schedules.
Every district has its own challenges: from narrow one-way streets in Ottensen to strict parking rules in the Neustadt. Our team plans every move individually and takes local conditions into account from the outset.
Norderstedt, Pinneberg, Ahrensburg: to the area around Hamburg
Many moves in Hamburg do not end at the city boundary but lead to the immediate surrounding area. We also handle moves between Hamburg and the surrounding towns in Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony.
- Norderstedt: north of Hamburg-Nord, easily reached via the A7 and the B433.
- Pinneberg and Elmshorn: west of the city, connected via the A23, popular with families with children.
- Ahrensburg: east of Wandsbek, connected via the A1, in demand among commuters.
- Reinbek and Geesthacht: east and south-east of the city respectively, north of the Elbe; Geesthacht is connected via the A25.
- Wedel and Buchholz i.d. Nordheide: to the west and south respectively, popular with commuters by car or S-Bahn.
- Stade: south-west on the Elbe, reachable via the A26, increasingly attractive for people moving out of Hamburg.
These moves usually count as local moves, as the distances are mostly short. Nevertheless, many routes cross the Elbe via the Köhlbrand Bridge, the Elbe Tunnel or the Elbe bridges – precise scheduling is important here to avoid rush-hour congestion.
For moves that do not need a full lorry load, we offer a cost-effective part-load – ideal for smaller households or individual pieces of furniture to be transported between Hamburg and the surrounding area. This saves you costs without doing without professional handling.
Whether Ahrensburg, Pinneberg or Buchholz – we fix the route between Hamburg and the surrounding area in advance and give you a realistic arrival time.
Period buildings, crossing the Elbe, weather: particularities in Hamburg
A move in Hamburg differs in many respects from a move inland. The proximity to the Elbe, the maritime architecture and the northern German climate bring their own challenges, which we take into account when planning.
Period buildings without a lift: in districts such as Eppendorf, Eimsbüttel or Ottensen there are many Wilhelminian-era buildings with four or five floors and narrow, winding stairwells. Carrying routes must be planned precisely here – especially for bulky items such as a piano transport, for which we determine securing and team size in advance.
Parking and no-parking zones: in densely built quarters such as St. Pauli, the Neustadt or Ottensen, parking is scarce. So that our removal van can stand right in front of the door, a no-parking zone is often necessary – this saves time and effort and protects your furniture from long carrying distances.
Port traffic and bridges: anyone moving from Harburg to the city centre or vice versa has to cross the Elbe – via the Elbe Tunnel, the Köhlbrand Bridge or the Elbe bridges. We plan our routes so that congestion times and closures are avoided as far as possible.
Weather: Hamburg is known for frequent rain and wind from the North Sea. We consistently protect your furniture and boxes with weatherproof blankets and film so that nothing is damaged even in unpleasant weather.
Permits: according to hamburg.de, the following applies to no-parking zones: application at least 14 days in advance, signs at least 4 days before use. A container also requires a special-use permit from the borough office; we clarify both with you in good time.
Moving costs in Hamburg: transparent prices for every move
The costs of a move in Hamburg depend on several factors: size of the flat, distance, floor, accessibility and extra services required. At Praktik Transport und Umzüge you receive fair and transparent fixed prices with no hidden costs.
| Service | Price |
|---|---|
| One-room flat | from €375 |
| Two-room flat | from €605 |
| Three-room flat | from €894 |
| Long-distance move (e.g. Berlin–Hamburg) | from €4.20/km |
| No-parking zone (per day) | €30–100 |
These guide values apply to standard moves within Hamburg or to the nearby surrounding area such as Norderstedt, Pinneberg or Ahrensburg. For a long-distance move, for example between Berlin and Hamburg over the route of about 284 kilometres from Berlin-Moabit on the A24, we calculate the price per kilometre – so you only pay for the distance actually driven.
Additional costs may arise if a no-parking zone has to be set up, for example in the narrow streets of the Schanze or in the Neustadt. Special services such as piano transport or a clearance before the move are also calculated separately, but always communicated transparently in advance.
For a binding quote, we recommend having a free survey carried out on site or by video. This allows us to assess factors such as floor, lift, access route and amount of furniture precisely and give you a realistic fixed price – with no nasty surprises on moving day.
Local move or long distance: the right type of move
Not every move in Hamburg is the same – the distinction between a local move and a long-distance move is decisive for planning, price and process.
A local move usually takes place within the city boundaries or in the immediate surrounding area – for example from Eimsbüttel to Winterhude, from Bergedorf to Reinbek or from Altona to Blankenese. Such moves can usually be completed in one day, often even within a few hours. Billing is usually based on the size of the flat and the effort involved, not on kilometres.
A long-distance move, on the other hand, is when the distance is considerably greater – for example between Hamburg and Berlin (about 284 km via the A24), Hanover, Bremen or other major German cities. Here we calculate from €4.20 per kilometre, depending on the loading volume and extra services. For long-distance moves we plan additional buffer times, for example for roadworks on the motorway or weather-related delays in the north.
- Local move: within Hamburg or to the nearby surrounding area such as Norderstedt, Ahrensburg or Pinneberg – usually a one-day move.
- Long-distance move: throughout Germany, e.g. to Berlin, Hanover or Munich – billed by the kilometre.
- Part-load: ideal if only a few pieces of furniture need to be transported – particularly cost-efficient over long distances.
For special groups we offer adapted concepts: a senior move requires particular consideration for mobility and personal belongings, while a student move often needs to be quick, straightforward and affordable – for example between shared-flat rooms in Rotherbaum or Eimsbüttel. Whatever type of move you are facing: we find the right solution for your route and your budget.
Services for your move in Hamburg
As a moving company from Berlin-Moabit, we offer a broad range of services in Hamburg, tailored to the different needs of private and commercial customers.
- Private move: from a small flat in Altona to a detached house in Bergedorf – we take care of planning, packing and transport.
- Company move: smooth moves for offices and companies in the city centre, HafenCity or City Nord, usually outside business hours.
- Part-load: an affordable transport solution for individual pieces of furniture or smaller households, ideal for routes between Hamburg and the surrounding area or other cities.
- Clearance: professional clearing of flats, cellars and attics – including household clearances throughout the Hanseatic city.
- No-parking zone: we advise on the application and length of the zone so that our removal van can park right in front of the door – important in tight quarters such as St. Pauli or Ottensen.
- Piano transport: transport of upright and grand pianos with suitable securing, especially important in period buildings without a lift.
- Senior move: sensitive support when moving into assisted living or a smaller flat, including help with visits to the authorities.
- Student move: fast, affordable moves for students, often between shared flats in Eimsbüttel, Rotherbaum or Winterhude.
All services can be combined flexibly – for example a clearance before the actual move or a no-parking zone in addition to the private move. This way you get an all-round package tailored precisely to your situation in Hamburg.
How your move in Hamburg works
A well-organised move in Hamburg begins long before the actual moving day. At Praktik Transport und Umzüge we follow a clearly structured process that gives you maximum planning certainty.
- 1. First contact and survey: you describe your plans – whether a move within Hamburg, to the surrounding area or a long-distance move. If required, we survey the flat on site or by video to assess the floor, accessibility and amount of furniture.
- 2. Individual quote: you receive a transparent fixed price that takes all the services discussed into account – from the number of rooms to extra services such as a no-parking zone or piano transport.
- 3. Scheduling: we agree the moving date according to your needs, also taking into account traffic volumes on routes such as the A7, A1 or A24 to avoid delays.
- 4. Packing and transport: our team from Berlin packs your belongings professionally, secures furniture for transport and loads everything carefully into our vehicles.
- 5. Moving day: whether a period building in Eppendorf with a narrow stairwell or a new build in HafenCity with a lift – we adapt our approach flexibly to local conditions.
- 6. Assembly and follow-up: on request, we reassemble furniture in the new flat and are available for questions even after the move.
This structured process applies equally to local and long-distance moves, for private and commercial customers alike. This is how we make sure that your move in Hamburg – whether within the city, to the surrounding area or to and from Berlin – is stress-free and reliable.
No-parking zone in Hamburg: application, deadline and fee
For the removal van in Hamburg, you apply for a temporary no-parking zone. According to hamburg.de, you use only the online service for this; the Hamburg police call it “Online HVZ”. You find the responsible office via the authority finder (Behördenfinder) by entering the street and house number.
- Deadline: the application should be received at least 14 days before the planned set-up.
- Signs: the traffic signs must be in place at least 4 days before use and may only be put up after approval.
- Fee: according to hamburg.de, between €30 and €200, depending on duration and scope. The legal basis is § 45 and § 46 StVO.
- Length: according to the Hamburg police, a 7.5-tonne lorry with a tail lift needs about 15 metres and a Sprinter van about 10 metres.
A separate order is needed for moving out and moving in. Do not reserve the space with barrier tape, boxes or chairs – according to the police, this is prohibited. If you need a container, a special-use permit from the borough office is required beforehand.
You can find our service under no-parking zone; our step-by-step guide explains the general steps.
According to the Hamburg police, you have two options for setting up the signs: a specialist company obtains the order, puts up the signs, keeps the record and takes them down again. Or you put up official signs yourself and record the time and any parked vehicles in a log.
Moving to Hamburg's seven boroughs and the surrounding area
According to hamburg.de, Hamburg is divided into seven boroughs: Altona, Bergedorf, Eimsbüttel, Hamburg-Mitte, Hamburg-Nord, Harburg and Wandsbek. Each borough has a borough office (Bezirksamt) with local administrative tasks, whose customer centre is the point of contact for citizens. This matters for your move in several ways, because special-use permits, for example for a container, are handled by the borough office.
So plan the day by borough: where will the van stand, how far is it to the front door and how many floors lie ahead of you? For period buildings without a lift, we go through the carrying routes with you in advance and plan the crew accordingly.
- Within Hamburg: compare the moving-out and moving-in addresses – they may be in different boroughs.
- To the surrounding area: outside the city boundary, the rules of the respective town apply. According to its own website, Norderstedt offers registrations and changes of address via an online portal.
- From Berlin to Hamburg: the journey starts at our location at Stromstraße 21 in Berlin-Moabit.
You can find more about the surrounding area on our Norderstedt page and in the overview for Schleswig-Holstein. Our moving guide for Hamburg offers initial orientation in the city, with details on the route under long-distance move.
For closures or containers, first check which borough office is responsible for your address, because this determines where you submit your applications.
