Key answers for your move in Bremen
In all districts of Bremen, from the city centre via Schwachhausen and Vegesack to Huchting and Hemelingen, and also in Bremerhaven. Our team comes from Berlin; we clarify access and parking situation in advance.
Moving in the two-city state: Bremen and Bremerhaven
A move in Bremen means more than loading boxes – the Hanseatic city on the Weser combines the narrow lanes of the old town, new-build quarters in the Überseestadt and quiet suburban locations in Horn-Lehe or Oberneuland. Praktik Transport und Umzüge comes from Berlin-Moabit (Stromstraße 21), about 390 road kilometres away; we therefore ask about the particularities of your district in detail before the appointment.
We handle moves for private individuals, families and companies in the state of Bremen – from the city centre to Bremerhaven. Whether a compact student move near the University of Bremen, a private move to Schwachhausen or a company move in the Überseestadt: we determine the team and equipment after the survey.
Together with Bremerhaven, Bremen forms a two-city state in which each city has its own authorities. The Weser, the bridges between the districts and the older buildings in quarters such as Ostertor call for planning that takes narrow stairwells and tight access into account. We clarify these points with you from the first survey onwards.
Bremen lies on the A1, A27 and A28 motorways; the route to Berlin runs via the A27, A7 and A2. This means that regional moves within the city can be planned just as well as moves to Berlin. We say openly that we travel from Berlin – and plan every appointment with realistic lead time.
Five boroughs: residential areas in Bremen
Bremen is divided into five boroughs with 18 districts and 88 neighbourhoods. This structure is important for planning a move in Bremen, as access routes, parking situation and building stock vary greatly from area to area.
- Bremen-Mitte: old town, Ostertor and Steintor with older houses and narrow one-way streets
- Bremen-West: Walle, Gröpelingen and the Überseestadt in the former port area
- Bremen-Nord: Vegesack, Blumenthal and Burglesum on the Weser and the Lesum
- Bremen-Ost: Hemelingen, Vahr and Osterholz with large housing estates and commercial areas
- Bremen-Süd: Neustadt, Huchting and Obervieland on the left bank of the Weser
- Schwachhausen and Horn-Lehe: residential quarters with many period buildings, close to the university
Each of these areas has its own requirements for a move. In the densely built Neustadt, for example, narrow streets and little parking are the rule, which is why a no-parking zone is often sensible there. In Vegesack, stairwells in period buildings often have to be negotiated, while in the Überseestadt lifts make transport easier, but delivery times have to be agreed with the property management.
Surrounding municipalities such as Achim, Weyhe, Stuhr or Ottersberg also belong to our area of operation, as many Bremen families move out to the surrounding area or come into the city from there. We include the connections via the A1 and A27 and federal roads such as the B6 and B75 in our route planning.
Weser, bridges, period buildings: particularities in Bremen
The Hanseatic city of Bremen has some particularities that must be taken into account when moving. The Weser runs through the city and separates many districts, which are connected by several Weser bridges. Anyone moving from the Neustadt to Findorff, for example, has to plan for one of these crossings – at peak times this can noticeably lengthen the journey.
Another feature of Bremen is the older building stock in quarters such as the Schnoor, Ostertor or the Neustadt. Narrow cobbled streets, listed façades and narrow entrances require precise planning so that sofas and wardrobes fit through winding stairwells. For bulky pieces of furniture or piano transport in such period buildings, we use carrying straps and stair rollers.
Bremen's maritime character also plays a role: in Vegesack and Blumenthal there are many detached houses with gardens, while apartment buildings with limited parking tend to dominate in the city centre and the Viertel. The proximity to the ports and the Überseestadt also brings lorry traffic and roadworks, which we take into account when planning routes.
Last but not least, the weather on the Weser is often windy and changeable – a factor we take into account for outdoor transport and securing load areas. We record the particular features of your address, from the old town to the Bürgerpark, during the survey so that your move runs smoothly.
Moving costs in Bremen according to our price list
The moving costs in Bremen depend on several factors: size of the flat, distance, floor and extra services required. At Praktik Transport und Umzüge you receive transparent fixed prices with no hidden costs – after a survey by video or by arrangement, you know exactly what your move will cost.
| Service | Price from |
|---|---|
| One-room flat | €349 |
| Two-room flat | €599 |
| Three-room flat | €889 |
| Long-distance move (per km) | €4.10 |
| No-parking zone (per day) | €30–100 |
These guide values apply to moves within Bremen and to the surrounding area. For a move within the city, for example from Schwachhausen to Findorff, travel costs are usually lower than for a move to the more distant Bremen-Nord or to Bremerhaven. For larger flats of four rooms or more, houses or offices, we are happy to prepare an individual quote.
Extra services such as a professional clearance before moving out, safe piano transport of a grand piano or setting up a no-parking zone in the narrow streets of Bremen's Neustadt are calculated separately and transparently. Packing material, assembly and dismantling services and storage can also be added flexibly.
As Bremen is a comparatively compact federal state, many inner-city moves can be carried out more cheaply than in larger states. Nevertheless, we always recommend a personal consultation, as factors such as a lift, parking options and floor can influence the final costs. Our aim is to give you a fair, comprehensible quote – with no nasty surprises on moving day.
Local moves in Bremen and moves to Berlin
Whether moving within the city or across Germany – Bremen lies on several important motorways. The A1 connects Bremen with Hamburg and Osnabrück, the A27 with Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven, while the A28 leads towards Oldenburg and East Frisia. This location makes Bremen a good starting point for moves in many directions across northern Germany.
For a local move within Bremen, for example from the Vahr to Huchting or from Walle to the Überseestadt, we plan routes taking roadworks and peak times into account. We also handle moves to the immediate surrounding area – to Achim, Weyhe, Delmenhorst or Stuhr; because our team travels from Berlin, with some lead time.
For a move from Bremen to Berlin, it is about 390 road kilometres to our location in Berlin-Moabit, mostly via the A2, A7 and A27; by lorry this takes about six hours including a break. We also plan moves to Munich, Cologne or other federal states, from the route to delivery. If the full loading capacity is not needed, we also offer a part-load, where your goods are transported together with other consignments.
The connection between Bremen and Bremerhaven, the two cities of the federal state, is also part of our field of work. From our location it is about 447 road kilometres to Bremerhaven; the A27 runs between the two cities. Many families and commuters move between these cities.
Whether a few kilometres or several hundred kilometres away: we make sure that your belongings arrive at their destination safely, punctually and undamaged.

Your move in Bremen in seven steps
A structured process is the key to a stress-free move in Bremen. Our approach is clearly organised so that you always know what happens next.
1. Survey and consultation: we survey your current flat by video or by arrangement – whether in the Neustadt, in Vegesack or in the area around Bremen – and record the scope, particular features and possible challenges such as narrow stairwells or a lack of parking.
2. Individual quote: based on the survey, we prepare a transparent fixed-price quote that takes into account all the services you want, such as packing, a no-parking zone or clearance.
3. Scheduling: we agree the moving date with you, also taking into account possible restrictions such as roadworks on the Bremen ring road or delivery times in the Überseestadt.
4. Packing and preparation: on request, we professionally pack your household goods, including high-quality packing material and labelling of the boxes.
5. Transport day: our team travels from Berlin, loads your goods securely, transports them via the fastest route – whether within Bremen or to Berlin – and delivers them punctually to your new home.
6. Assembly and set-up: furniture is assembled professionally and placed in the rooms you want, so that you feel at home straight away.
7. Final inspection: together we check that everything has been done as agreed, and we are available for any questions.
This structured process ensures that you feel well looked after throughout – from the first enquiry to the last box in your new flat.

Stopping, parking and pedestrian zone: the rules in Bremen
For the removal van in Bremen, two things need to be kept apart: stopping at the roadside and special permits. The Office for Roads and Traffic (ASV) explains that under a restricted stopping ban, stopping on the carriageway for longer than three minutes is prohibited. Loading and unloading is permitted but must be done without delay; anyone who stands for longer is legally parking. In addition, without a sign: at narrow or blind spots in the road, at least 3 metres must remain clear. Longer loading and unloading therefore requires a separate arrangement, which we clarify with you during planning, see no-parking zone.
If your address is in a pedestrian zone, you need an exemption permit to drive in according to service.bremen.de. The city explicitly names moves there as a possible compelling reason. The responsible office at the ASV is Unit 32 (exemption permits), Herdentorsteinweg 49/50, telephone +49 421 361 31092. The application should be submitted at least 14 days before the journey; processing takes two to three weeks. The documents must be submitted within 14 days of the application, otherwise the application is deemed closed. The fee depends on the application; you will find out the amount from the ASV.
service.bremen.de also lists an exemption permit for moves that is handled by the Bremen police (In der Vahr 76); moves in pedestrian zones are excluded from this. The ASV's online form concerns exemptions from the ban on driving on Sundays and public holidays.
Bulky waste, residents' parking permit and Bremerhaven: practical tips for moving in Bremen
Decluttering before the move is worthwhile. In Bremen, according to service.bremen.de, private households can drop off bulky waste free of charge at a recycling station, up to 2 cubic metres per visit; only the Blockland station (Fahrwiesendamm 100) accepts larger quantities. Vehicles up to 3.5 t permissible gross weight are admitted, and the waste must be sorted. You should bring your ID or your fee notice. Other stations are located in Hastedt, Hohentor, Oberneuland and Borgfeld, among others. Die Bremer Stadtreinigung provides information on +49 421 361-3611.
A few things change after moving in: according to service.bremen.de, the residents' parking permit must be reissued when your address changes, and the vehicle must also be re-registered. According to service.bremen.de, the address in your ID card or passport can partly be updated online.
Bremerhaven is a separate city with its own authorities. You can reach Entsorgungsbetriebe Bremerhaven (EBB) at Grashoffstraße 6, telephone 0471 9800-333, Monday to Thursday 9 am to 3 pm, Friday 9 am to 1 pm. For parking in the city centre, the city states over 2,700 spaces; the municipal parking company STÄPARK operates several multi-storey car parks. You can find more on the cost structure in our guide to moving to Bremen. For moves to the surrounding area in Lower Saxony, see Lower Saxony.
